I am currently working on a new book that draws on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale - its about the Pre-Raphaelite circle of artists and poets and in particular about the creation of a famous series of paintings of 'The Legend of Briar Rose' by Edward Burne-Jones. Its a big & complex book, but very fascinating. Then I'm thinking of playing with 'The Nightingale & the Rose', a Chinese fairy tale ... but we'll see.
all my best

5 Essential Lessons That Will Make You A Better Writer

How do you reimagine a well-known story and still create a captivating and compelling narrative? I’ve spent the past few years researching and writing my latest novel Psykhe, which is a retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Eros and Psykhe. It’s the source of one of the world’s best-known and most beloved fairy tales, […]

“May my heart be kind, my mind fierce, and my spirit brave.”
Kate Forsyth, The Witches of Eileanan

“There's a flame of magic inside every stone & every flower, every bird that sings & every frog that croaks. There's magic in the trees & the hills & the river & the rocks, in the sea & the stars & the wind, a deep, wild magic that's as old as the world itself. It's in you too, my darling girl, and in me, and in every living creature, be it ever so small. Even the dirt I'm sweeping up now is stardust. In fact, all of us are made from the stuff of stars.”
Kate Forsyth, The Puzzle Ring

“I think fantasy is best described as a kind of fiction that evokes wonder, mystery or magic, a sense of possibility beyond the ordinary world in which we live, and yet which reflects and comments upon that known world.”
Kate Forsyth

“She felt as if she had strayed into a fairy tale, as full of peril as of wonder, a place where anything could happen.”
Kate Forsyth, The Puzzle Ring

“You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching,
Love like you'll never be hurt,
Sing like there's nobody listening,
And live like it's heaven on earth.”
William W. Purkey

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
H. Jackson Brown Jr., P.S. I Love You

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
Martin Luther King Jr., A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
