5 Questions With Brad Montague

Montague Workshop, which Brad Montague founded with his wife, Kristi, strives to “joyfully rebel against the way things are and attempt to create the world as it should be.” And its output — videos; popular books for kids (and, to be fair, “former kids,” as Brad refers to adults); and their weekly newsletter, “The Enthusiast”— has done just that. This is especially true of Brad’s Kid President series, featuring a bright-eyed then 9-year-old “Kid President” in a suit and red tie.Robby Novak, ...

Randal Ford

Creativity is a paradoxical pursuit: The craft of making requires vulnerability and a certain kind of tenderness or openness to the world around us. At the same time, putting our work out in the world today can take a shit ton of courage and tenacity. This is a space to shine a light on the folks who are straddling these tensions and making us all a little better with their art. —Brené

David Ambroz

Ten years ago, Brené started the Daring Interview series on her blog. It quickly became one of our favorite features. Now, we are relaunching the series and adding in a few new questions, including some from the late James Lipton, host of Inside the Actors Studio, and Smith Magazine’s Six-Word Memoir.

David Ambroz opens his memoir, A Place Called Home, on Christmas Eve 1985. He’s 5 years old, starving, cold, and covered with lice, stumbling past the glowing store windows of New York City. If ...

5 Questions With Jon Staff

Jon Staff has a lifelong appreciation of the great outdoors. I, on the other hand, have always had a lifelong appreciation for the great indoors, so when I had the opportunity to fall in love with one of the cabin escapes provided by Staff’s company, Getaway, no one was more surprised than I. It turns out that Jon believes that rest and being unplugged is a human right, and he’s on a mission to ensure that folks have the opportunity to spend some unconnected time in nature, away from their hyper...

A Dare to Lead + BetterUp Partnership

Over the past five years, Certified Dare to Lead Facilitators have taken over 120,000 people across 45 countries through our Dare to Lead program. Our evaluation data are clear — this courage-building work has a tremendous impact on individuals, teams, and organizations.

Like all leaders, I’ve been working to understand how to meet this once-in-a-lifetime moment of sweeping global change. I started searching for a partner who shares our values and is bravely innovating at the intersection of...

Living Beyond Human Scale

In this episode, Barrett and I talk about what we’ve learned from the eight amazing guests who have been a part of the series. My key takeaway list is way longer than this, but here are a few:

The earth-shaking swirl of social media, AI, wearable tech, bio tech, etc. is not getting ready to happen — it’s happening.
I wish we would have been in a more stable, tethered place before the maelstrom hit. For me, it can feel like navigating the worst fun house — on my knees.
  The best way ...

5 Questions With Kelley Robinson

Last year, I flew to Washington, DC, to deliver a keynote speech at the Equality Convention of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest LGBTQIA+ civil rights organization. While waiting for my turn to take the stage, I watched as Kelley Robinson, the organization’s new president — and the first Black queer woman to fill that role — took the microphone with her child on her hip and proceeded to fire up the hundreds of activists and advocates in the audience. With a few well-chosen wo...

Jensen Neff and Ellie Chen, Founders of Oddli

In the realm of sustainable fashion, Oddli clothing’s Gen Z co-founders, Ellie Chen and Jensen Neff, are sparking a style revolution with their fresh and conscious approach. Born and raised in an era marked by the fashion industry’s tumultuous relationship with the planet, Oddli stands out as a beacon of conscious consumerism with a flair for fun. Motivated by the glaring issue of fabric waste in the industry, Ellie and Jensen spent their senior year at Stanford University building Oddli as the ...

5 Questions With Elizabeth Chapin

Contemporary artist Elizabeth Chapin takes an anthropological approach to her painting and sculpture work, exploring themes of “nostalgia, privilege, tolerance, freedom, and discomfort” in colorful, multi-dimensional works in vibrant hues that spark awe and delight. Growing up in Mississippi in a traditional Southern culture with closely defined ideals of beauty, Chapin’s work, focused on young women as portrait subjects, aims to redefine what it means to be women. “My greatest hope for women is...
