5 Questions With Katherine Center

Katherine Center knows about love. And she definitely knows love stories. She’s the New York Times bestselling author of many “laugh-and-cry” novels, including How to Walk Away, Things You Save in a Fire, The Bodyguard, her latest, Hello Stranger, and her next book, coming out this June, The Rom-Commers. The Netflix movie adaptation of her novel Happiness for Beginners — starring Ellie Kemper and Luke Grimes — hit the Global Top Ten in 81 countries, and the movie of her novel The Lost Husband wa...

5 Questions With Phil Rosenthal

On the surface, the Netflix unscripted documentary Somebody Feed Phil appears to be your typical food-and-travel show. But four episodes in, you realize that you’re watching something totally different: Phil Rosenthal, the charming, funny, and guileless host, is actually inviting you to join him as he explores kinship, connection, and true belonging – food and travel are just his vehicles. And it’s no wonder it works: Phil was the showrunner/executive producer of the hit CBS comedy series Everyb...

Clint Smith

Ten years ago, Brené started the Daring Interview series on her blog. It quickly became one of our favorite features. Now, we are relaunching the series and adding in a few new questions, including some from the late James Lipton, host of Inside the Actors Studio, and Smith Magazine’s Six-Word Memoir.

Clint Smith is a writer, a teacher, and a scholar. An artist, an activist, and an avid Arsenal fan. What’s not to love? I first read his work in preparation for Brené’s conversation with him on ...

R. Eric Thomas

R. Eric Thomas is a creative chameleon who seems to pop up in pop culture when you least expect it. And when he does, his voice might sound familiar. Many met him through “Eric Reads the News,” ...

Creativity is a paradoxical pursuit: The craft of making requires vulnerability and a certain kind of tenderness or openness to the world around us. At the same time, putting our work out in the world today can take a shit ton of courage and tenacity. This is a space to shine a light on the folks who are straddling these tensions and making us all a little better with their art. —Brené

Ashton Applewhite

Ten years ago, Brené started the Daring Interview series on her blog. It quickly became one of our favorite features. Now, we are relaunching the series and adding in a few new questions, including some from the late James Lipton, host of Inside the Actors Studio, and Smith Magazine’s Six-Word Memoir.

I first stumbled across the work of anti-ageism activist Ashton Applewhite when her 2017 TED talk, “ Let’s End Ageism ,” showed up in one of my social media feeds. Although I’ve never been one to ...

5 Questions With Bonnie Tsui

Swimming. It’s one of those happy nouns that can spark a flood of sensory memories — of warm afternoons, of the smell of coconut sunscreen and watermelon bubblegum and chlorinated pools and salty oceans. A lifeguard’s whistle. The song of the summer blaring from a boom box. That feeling at the end of the day of being pleasantly exhausted, your skin still a little cool from the water, winding down to sleep well. But is swimming just a luxury of childhood, past lives, and rare vacations — a pastim...

Listening + Learning

Thank you for the important discourse in the comments on our website to my February 13th article. I’m learning a lot about myself, and I’m continuing to challenge my beliefs and search out the areas where I’m unknowingly biased.

In addition to reading all of your comments, talking with people who disagree with me, and reading as much as I can, I have interviewed activists doing the work on the ground, and a policy scholar who studies why the US has failed to broker peace and how our involveme...
