Silver Melody - The Unadjusteds
Come and see Silver, the main character in The Unadjusteds, interviewed...
Silver: Hi, I’m Silver Melody, sixteen years old. Is that good?
Interviewer: yes
Interviewer: What did you want to be when you grew up–and what did you end up becoming?
Silver: I wanted to be a karate master. I guess that could still happen, but for now, I’m a resistance fighter. An orphan – is that a job title? I don’t have much time left to save my parents, so, yeah, looks like orphan is on the cards. And I guess I could still be a karate master. I still train. And I can beat the shit out of most people. President Bear’s got it coming.
Interviewer: What are your hobbies?
Silver: Staying alive. (laughs) Oh, you’re serious…I already mentioned karate, but I also I play guitar and I make up songs. Like the freedom song that everyone in the cave is singing now…
“We are the sun, we are the dawn,
We are the voice that urges you along.
Cast your eyes to the wreckage, the oppression, and the pain,
Lift your sights to the horizon—learn to live again.
We are the pain, we are the tears,
We’re the voices that were lost over the years.
But when our hearts burn quiet in the dark of night,
We won’t bear to keep this silence—we will stand, and we will fight.”
Interviewer: Who are your friends? Do you have a best friend? Describe these people.
Silver: Paige – she has these amazing green wings. And she’s so kind. She looks out for me. Matt, obviously. We’ve always been friends forever. And now we’re…together. He keeps me on the straight and narrow. He gives me confidence when I doubt myself. Joe. Joe isn’t here anymore, but he knew how to make me laugh and he was so strong, he saved me more than once.
Interviewer: What flaw must you overcome?
Silver: That’s at tough question. I have no idea what to say…um…I think, maybe, I have to trust more. The superfreaks…I never realized there were some out there just like me. I thought they were all crazy nanite junkies. But now that I’ve gotten to know a few, I realize I was wrong.
Interviewer: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Silver: In a society free of genetic modification. Safe. Happy. In a little house with my family and Matt. Well, that’s what I want, anyway.
Interviewer: is there anything else you want to add?
Silver: yeah, just, wish me luck, my author has another three books planned.
