Not so with Chemistry Lessons. It is a little gem or a “friends-to-lovers” romance novel. At just over 73,000 words, Jae was able to contain her tendency to write fat books, or most likely, her tour de force title limited her in depth and scope. This is all to the good.

The first thing I was impressed with in Chemistry Lessons is the fact that both the MCs are working-class women; Kylie Wells is a cafeteria worker at a middle school and Regan Romano is a chemistry teacher at the same school. So many of the modern Sapphic romances or “romantic blend” novels feature powerful lawyers, doctors, or other professional women.

The plot is a simple one. Kylie and Regan have been best friends since they were five. Both turned out to prefer dating women and both are bright and attractive. So why haven’t they ever dated? Well, there was no chemistry there, right? Their friends convince them to go on a real date to determine the truth.

I appreciated the way in which the story unfolded. My early skepticism at basing an entire book on a single “chemistry test” evaporated when the author seamlessly slipped in an additional two dates into Kylie’s and Regan’s “experiment.” They bulked out the book while showing their growing realization that something unexpected may be happening between them. Their epiphany happens at exactly halfway through the book when something very unexpected occurs that occupies the attention of the reader without too much disappointment. Think of a first kiss interrupted by someone knocking at the door—but on a higher level.

The backstories of the protagonists are pretty interesting and Regan’s family is well-described and very sympathetic. Most of the rest of the book describes Kylie’s feelings for Regan and vice versa, mostly internalized, but well done. Is there a bit too much of their obsession with analyzing their feelings so completely? Well, yes, but as I hinted before, the title limits the length of the book and Jae uses the musings of the protagonists to pad the book just enough. I don’t even mind that she pretty much trivializes other plot points in an epilogue that takes place a year after the “chemistry experiments.”

The author often uses language that more literary writers would choose to omit and yes, this does get on my nerves a little, but the narrator of the audiobook I listened to made even most of the cliched language seem simply contemporary.

One note, though. Early in the novel, the two characters enter a restaurant where they are assailed by wonderful food smells. The author writes: “Regan barely kept herself from salivating.” Salivating is an involuntary bodily function, like goosebumps, like heartbeats. You can’t control them.

That is all.

The first things you need to know about this novel are 1. it is absolutely first-rate, and 2. it isn’t a novel at all.

As to my first claim, Pek is in incredibly skilled wordsmith. Her internal dialogue is almost as good as Nikki Baker’s and her use of poetic language—especially metaphors and similes—are so much better than anyone else’s that there is no comparison. She writes with the kind of care and creativity that should inspire all authors.

But when I say that The Rivals is not a novel, I mean that it is not only not a stand-alone book, but it is as far from a stand-alone book that I believe I have ever seen. Almost every part of the plot and subplots refer back to the first book in the series, The Verifiers. Still, the book is interesting, informative, and exciting. So let’s call it part of a saga; but what a cool saga it is.

I don’t want to go into a lot of details about the plot, but quickly, 25-year-old Claudia Lin is half owner of Veracity, a company whose clients want to find out if the people they have met through online dating services are telling the truth about themselves in their self-descriptions. There is a lot of technical detail about algorithms and such, but they are topical af and go into scenarios that warn us that our personal decisions may soon be formed by the ads we consume. As it turns out, Veracity’s new client turns out to have some relation to happenings in the first book, so the plot both begins and continues.

And although the plot is a good one and has poor Claudia cycling all over Brooklyn, the backstories concerning her family are just as interesting. The idea of tradition versus modernity is a large motif. And the crush that she has on Becks—her co-owner in Veracity—threatens to blow up the pages without actually doing so. As I was reading this b9ook, I was simultaneously studying three of the most popular lesbian romance books. All three were excellent and all three had tantalizing couples, but none could touch Claudia and Becks.

So when I tell you all that you need to read the first book first, I am not only giving you a strong suggestion, I am doing you a favor by hopefully, increasing your reading pleasure twofold. Still, if I am rating a book by its success as a novel, I can’t give it a five. Still, it ranks right up there. It’s hard not to hope that the third novel in the sequence will come out soon and that this whole mess will be straightened up—and find out if girl gets girl at last.

For years now I’ve had the idea that the mystery genre was getting stale. Every crime on earth had been committed—and solved—not only once but hundreds of times over. Luckily for me, character-driven plots are always more interesting than plot-driven ones and it became easy to pay little attention who actually done it and focus on the interactions between characters. But Malka Older has figured out a way to get around the problem of repetition ad nauseum—she simply sets her mystery stories outside the planet Earth. And this perspective opens up a myriad of new possibilities in crime fiction.

And like many—or all?—good writers of futuristic fiction, Older is a world-builder. Here’s the setting. Earth has been destroyed by ecological disasters. Fortunately, a number of its inhabitants managed to escape and colonize other worlds. One of these seems to be the rings of Jupiter, although in the novel the planet is referred to as Giant. Settlers have somehow built platforms on the planet’s rings that are interconnected by a railcar system and protected from the gaseous, poisonous atmosphere by some method or other. Some platforms house major universities, some museums, some fields of rude agriculture, and others only a small building or two. It is from one of these smaller platforms that a man goes missing.

Mossa is an Investigator sent out to find the missing man, who is a scholar at a university on the Valdegeld platform. Coincidently, Valdegeld is where Mossa herself studied, and where she fell in love with her roommate Pleiti—although the two later parted as they went into their separate careers. Pleiti became a Scholar at the university whose job it is to study historical records of Earth’s ecosystems in an attempt to create one that will someday allow humans to move back to the restored planet.

Luckily, scientists have preserved DNA cells from as many Earth species as possible, which can be regenerated when they can survive again in nature. But what does this have to do with Mossa’s missing person? Well, evidence seems to indicate that just before he disappeared, he stole a great number of these cell samples. Then a possible witness to the theft is murdered.

To get back to my original thesis: The Mimicking of Known Successes involves a unique crime—one that couldn’t have ever happened on Earth. And typically, even though I recognize the uniqueness of the crime—it is the relationship between Mossa and Pleiti that captivated me. Mossa is the dour and unemotional Sherlock of the relationship while Pleti—the narrator of the story—is her Watson. But Holmes and Watson never tiptoed around their relationship like Mossa and Pleiti. Both the crime and the romance are first rate and I’m dying to get m y ears around the audiobook for the next two books in the series.

Final Rating: 4.5

And I will confess that I will start with the reviews of those who hated it. If they are silly, such as “Ugh. My wife says that this book had sex between two women,” I will consider the source. But if a book is really bad, you can get a pretty good idea of why from the one- and two-star reviews. You can also be pretty sure that they were not written by someone in the author's family or writing group. Conflict of Interest is not “really bad” but it isn't good either, despite Jae’s many admirers.

It starts out okay, despite the fact that she uses the word ‘grin’ four times in the first couple of pages (and a whopping 50 times in the book as a whole). A lesbian police detective, Aiden Carlisle meets and becomes attracted to a therapist—Dawn Kinsley—whose specialty is rape counseling. When Dawn herself is raped, Aiden comes to her rescue and helps capture the rapist. This takes up maybe a fourth of the book, which I would call average (about 3 stars). The next fourth, approximately, details the trial, and the courtroom scenes are very well done, so rate this portion a 4. The last half, however, chronicles Aiden’s and Dawn’s attempts to form a relationship despite Dawn’s aversion to sex and Aiden’s wishy-washiness and determination not to hurt—or push—Dawn too quickly. The best adjectives I found for this were in the poorer reviews for this book: redundant, tedious, sappy.

I tend to harp on editorial omissions and just plain bad editing. The history of this book seems to indicate that it has been edited to death and that neither the author or its many editors have any idea how to fix it. It is as badly put together as a book can be, with almost the entire story happening in the first half of the book. But it’s not just that. Nor is it the overuse of ‘grin,’,’ a word that has so much baggage left over from its overuse in juvenile series novels that it should be rarely used today—and for a very specific type of smile. The author’s use of internal conversation: ”Asking me to come home with her. Is he flirting?” is not well done, either. In fact, it’s overdone and blatant. And then there is the other type of internalizing: “Now that she knew Dawn better, she found that she wasn't just attracted to Dawn physically, she liked her as a person too.”

Gag me. This is not the kind of mature writing that is going to advance the literary popularity of lesbian mysteries. In fact, it sets it back. I have to confess that I skimmed much of the last half of the book, reading every fifth sentence or so. And I guarantee you that I missed nothing of importance. It is like a soap opera where you only have to look at it once a week to know exactly what is going on.

Some of the earlier reviews make it clear that an extensive revision has been done on this book since it first appeared in 2008--although not nearly extensive enough in my opinion. Yet upon its republication as an e-book by Ylva Press—at a way too-expensive price—Conflict of Interest has been on the Amazon Top 100 LBGT Mysteries list almost constantly. It even hit Number One. Someone needs to do some research on how this can happen when far better books, like those of Gina L. Dartt, Peta Fox, and Deborah Powell never seem to appear at all. I don’t care how few readers of lesbian mysteries there are, when books like Conflict of Interest, She Overheard Murder, or Small Town Trouble finish ahead of any of Katherine V. Forrest's books it is a shame and does not speak well of the level of readership involved.

My rating of the book as a whole? If I had read it from cover to cover and if I gate official star ratings, this one would be around a 2.
