of
Zhiguai: Chinese True Tales of the Paranormal and Glitches in the Matrix:
"Yi Izzy Yu and John Yu Branscum are the power team of editors and translators who brought to life one of my favorite collections, The Shadow Book of Ji Yun, a wondrous curation of weird little Chinese tales—also known as zhiguai—which were collected "

This is hands-down my favorite collection this year so far and a masterclass in everything a short story can be. I felt excited reading it in the same way I felt excited when I first discovered Gu Shi, Kelly Link, Ken Liu, or Ted Chiang. There’s that ...more | |

"Everyone knows Anne Carson is cool as fuck.
Horrible opening. Let’s try again, perchance. Pull a sentence at random and a universe unravels into existence. A cosmos in each comma, a period like a sun setting on the page. Anne Carson is an alchemist who " Read more of this review » |

“There are a number of good books that draw upon fox legends -- foremost among them, Kij Johnson's exquisite novel The Fox Woman. I also recommend Neil Gaiman's The Dream Hunters (with the Japanese artist Yoshitaka Amano); Larissa Lai's unusual novel, When Fox Is a Thousand; Helen Oyeyemi's recent novel, Mr. Fox; and Ellen Steiber's gorgeous urban fantasy novel, A Rumor of Gems, as well as her heart-breaking novella "The Fox Wife" (published in Ruby Slippers, Golden Tears). For younger readers, try the "Legend of Little Fur" series by Isobelle Carmody. You can also support a fine mythic writer by subscribing to Sylvia Linsteadt's The Gray Fox Epistles: Wild Tales By Mail.
For the fox in myth, legend, and lore, try: Fox by Martin Wallen; Reynard the Fox, edited by Kenneth Varty; Kitsune: Japan's Fox of Mystery, Romance, and Humour by Kiyoshi Nozaki;Alien Kind: Foxes and Late Imperial Chinese Narrative by Raina Huntington; The Discourse on Foxes and Ghosts: Ji Yun and Eighteenth-Century Literati Storytelling by Leo Tak-hung Chan; and The Fox and the Jewel: Shared and Private Meanings in Contemporary Japanese Inari Worship, by Karen Smythers.”

“What kinds of creatures are we? Just because we want a piece of meat, we take a life. Just because we want a bowl of soup, we kill the child of another being. In exchange for a good taste in our mouth that will last seconds, we take endless years from another animal, causing them to suffer fear, pain, and sadness. These questions are not odd to ask. Centuries ago, the famous poet Su Shi asked them too—as have others. We all must eat of course. But we should find a way to do this compassionately. And our efforts should be more thoughtful than a short fast here and there. Such half measures foster evil while making people feel like they’re accomplishing great good.”

“So, as with everything, from the practice of medicine and scholarship to political service, the genuine and the fraudulent coexist and blur into each other. What should one do then? Simply this: be skeptical of what you hear. Yet also have enough humility to accept the world contains more than what you can see or imagine.”
