To many readers of crime fiction, Ross Macdonald was one of the best ever. His Lew Archer series was an inspiration to me and many of the crime writers I know, including Linwood Barclay, John Connolly and many others.
I looked him up in California in 1980, when I was 23 and dreaming of becoming a crime writer. Hoping, in fact, to become his protege. It was a bittersweet experience as you can read in this memoir, False Lead. I wrote it in 1983 after he died and recently posted it on Wattpad for Memoir Month.
