Ria Rees writes from her cosy cottage in Wales, praying that her creations will never become sentient. Her first loves in fiction were Horror and Sci-Fi, and she leaps at any chance she gets to combine the two.

As well as working on her debut science fiction novel, Ria posts weekly episodes of her serial novel "Emotiv" on a number of free-to-read platforms.

Her short stories are published or forthcoming in Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine, Bag of Bones Press and Martian Magazine.

Another project is entirely anonymous for now, but I'll be able to tell you all about it in October - until then, keep an eye on the Inkfort Publish Derby! I'm one of the authors, but I can't say which one!

My third big project is my serial novel Emotiv - a near-future scifi dystopia based on a short story I wrote about a coffee shop which serves emotions.

I'm always working on short stories and submitting to magazines at the moment, too!(less)

Sealkeeper reaches #112 in LGBTQ+ YA Fiction!

This is the closest I've ever come to reaching a top 100 in any category, so I'm pretty excited right now!

Sealkeeper has been such a great learning experience for me, and I'm really so proud to see it doing well in sales, but even more so, I'm getting a huge thrill seeing what people think about it.

Just had to share, this has me giddy! Read more of this blog post »

“There are rules in this house, honey.” He fumbles with a clipper lighter, lights a cigarette, and takes a long drag. He peers at me through the smoke. “You gonna stick to the rules?”
Ria Rees, One Hundred: Words / Days / Stories

“Designer Baby -

You lay on the exam table, warm jelly on your stomach. The nurse's eyes crinkle at the corners. "Are we deciding the sex today?"
Allen grins. "Yes, a boy!"
You groan. "Do we have to choose? Can't we at least leave this to fate?”

“The Argienti stopped moving, and the one nearest Erasmus said, “Give us the pendant and we will make your death painless.”

Erasmus frowned. That…really wasn’t a very good place to start negotiations, to be completely honest.”
M.J. Raynaud, A Perfectly Ordinary Day

“...he saw Quotinir floating in front of him. Deep in the darkest parts of the ocean, he was lit only by a single, yellow light that swung from a fin atop his head. His grey skin sickly under the swinging bulb, he looked as much like a man as he did a monster, scarred and chipped around the edges, with strands of white hair like seaweed flowing around his narrow face. His human waist merged with the rubbery flesh of a shark, the tail larger than any fish or man Elf had ever seen. Though, Quotinir himself was four times larger than any man - the last true giant - trapped under the pressure of the ocean with only his light for company. Slitted, white eyes locked onto Elf as they both floated, suspended in the darkness.

‘Hey, ugly,’ Elf said.”
Q.E. Saenz, The Mermaid's Shoal
