The US loves The Paying Guests!

Following on from its success in the UK, The Paying Guests has now reached no. 12 on the New York Times bestseller list!

In addition it has also been receiving some wonderful reviews over there since publication, including this from the Washington Post:

'Some novels are so good, so gripping or shattering that they leave you uncertain whether you should have ever started them. You open “The Paying Guests” and immediately surrender to the smooth assuredness of Sarah Waters’s silken prose. Nothing jars. You relax. You turn more pages. You start turning them faster. Before long, you resemble Coleridge’s Wedding-Guest: You cannot choose but read. The book has you in thrall. You will follow Waters and her story anywhere. Yet when that story ends, you find yourself emotionally sucked dry, as much stunned as exhilarated by the power of art.'

Here is a full round-up of reviews so far:

The Frozen Scream: A play co-written by Sarah Waters and Christopher Green

Based on the lost 1928 supernatural murder-mystery novel, The Frozen Scream tells the chilling tale of a group who find themselves stranded at an abandoned lodge in the depths of winter. Forced to entertain themselves, they begin to tell the tale of Jack Frost, the most terrifying of the Frost Giants. But as the story takes a shocking twist, they discover they should have heeded the early warnings to ‘beware the ice’.

Surrounded by mystery and intrigue, the original novel was quick to receive critical acclaim but fell out of favour when a series of mysterious deaths led to the belief that the novel was cursed. Undeterred by these conspiracy theories, Olivier-award winning entertainer Christopher Green (Tina C, Ida Barr, Office Party) and one of the UK's best-selling novelists, Sarah Waters (Tipping the Velvet, The Little Stranger) bring this largely unread work to the stage in an adaptation that will send shivers down your spine this winter. But is everything as it seems?
