Night Comet

The wrath of this sorrow
This pain
Has blazed this once youthful mind
Into something so foreign
So transformed
That I scarce recognize these thoughts
These implanted feelings
As my own

I somehow awake in the aftermath
Eyes finally wide
Mind finally alert
And search the ruins to find my footing

I cannot rely on the trail taken
By a man younger than the one who wears these shoes
Time’s breath swept that route clear
The unceasing exhale of change and abrupt renewal

To survive is to adapt
Acknowledging the imprudence of resistance
I must build anew upon the foundation of integrity
Alight in veracity’s glow
The steady comet slicing this brilliant star-freckled sky
