By Your Side
I will be here
Even if you ask me to go
To run
To find another
And live anew in the Sun's embrace.
This is my place
In this leg of our journey together,
Where our beats create a unified rhythm
For our soaring spirits.
I desire none other.
I have a thousand blessings
Upon the foundation we forged
With countless memories.
Know that you are mine.
That I am eternally yours.
And that love did indeed conquer all.
What comes next for us, my dear?
Can you see it?

Poem: "Backyard Dinner"
It was late afternoon,
The sun highlighting the tree tops,
The wind beginning to usher evening's chill.
I sat next my five-year-old boy
And forked at my stuffed bell peppers
While he spooned his noodle soup.
Picture a wine glass
Half red,
Beside a cut rose in a vase.
Now shift your eyes and behold
The orange shavings of six loquats,
The peels piled in sticky layers.
If I could paint and show a friend
A slice of this April weekend,
This would be my subject.
I'd start with the disposed loquat seeds
Resting in my bowl,
Huddled together as if glued as one unit.
I'd then move to the pomegranate tree
Where spring sprinkled its magic
And summoned a brilliant crimson bloom.
The last touches on my canvas
Would have to be my boy
And his small hand on mine.
Just father and son
At a backyard dinner,
Where simplicity silenced a world.

For Andrew
Director of Financial Planning and Analysis
That was your title
The one you worked so hard to achieve
You earned a higher education
And passed all the exams
That stood in your path
But it wasn’t just work
Or school
That made you into the person we cared about
It was your honesty
Your dedication
Your commitment to help others
You stood for worthy causes
Spoke your mind when necessary
And never sought the limelight
It pains me to admit
I didn’t notice your
Office was dark this morning
I should have known something was wrong
When you didn’t stop by
To borrow the three hole puncher on my desk
You were in your mid-forties
And had heart problems
But you were fit and otherwise healthy
In truth I still cannot believe
Your roommate found you on the floor
Yesterday
That warm heart you had
Somehow gave out
And left a hole in its wake
You were a coworker
A friend
And most of all, a compassionate spirit
Goodbye Andrew
We will miss our Director

The Corner House
Blossoms spill onto the sidewalk
In waves of lavender, crimson,
Emerald, and gold
A transformed curb
Invites the eye and imagination
To behold sprouting beauty
And yet it cannot be said
This paradise on a street so ordinary
Is completely controlled
For the resident in this corner house
Somehow guides nature’s wild growth
To coexist with an aesthetic plan
Too often it’s the opposite:
Landscaping that forces vines and shoots
Into awkward shapes and bland patterns
True beauty is captured at this intersection,
Where the sun’s rays find a home
And a flower pot sways on a wire beneath a street sign

March 22nd
You surprised your dad when
You remembered my day this morning,
When wiping sleep
From your eyes
And after stretching into
Your Popeye shirt and gray
Sweatpants you even
Recalled my two gifts
The first—a piece
Of candy, an exception
To my sweet-fast
During Lent
The second—a wrapped
Present you handmade
The night before,
Two quarters bundled in TJ stickers
You then asked what you
Could use to make my
Card and how you could
Create an envelope
When I dropped you
Off at preschool,
I had no idea that I’d be
Given yet another surprise
For I was only expecting
One card when I saw you again,
And what I received were
Three you had created
They said I love you
And I love you, my son
