Book Review: If I Were Dictator. The Pronouncements of the Grand Macaroni, by Lord Dunsany

If I Were Dictator. The Pronouncements of the Grand Macaroni If I Were Dictator. The Pronouncements of the Grand Macaroni by Lord Dunsany

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Part of the "If I Were Dictator" series of "uniform volumes" published in the 1930s by Methuen & Co. Ltd. (London), If I Were Dictator: The Pronouncements of the Grand Macaroni finds the Irish fantasist Lord Dunsany (Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett) solving the world's ills through droll humor, satirical logic, and biting wit. Here, Dunsany, naming himself the Grand Macaroni, attacks food add...

Sorting Vacation Pictures: Eraserhead Press at the Lucky Lab

Offered without comment, photos snapped at the Lucky Lab in Portland, OR (May 8, 2010). An amazing pizza (itself an homage to garlic), a couple of pitchers, and Carlton, Rose, and Jeff from Eraserhead Press. Conversation included Weetzy Bat, grotesques, queer Lovecraft, Portland-as-nexus, and publishing. A good time was had by all.

And it's even better when a Zeppelin flies past.

"Enough Zeppelin watching. Get back to work!"

I love the smell of carbon monoxide in the morning...

After eight days on the road, vacationing in the beautiful Pacific Northwest (pictures coming soon), we arrived home in Petaluma yesterday and realized we'd made it back in time for Cruisin' the Boulevard, Petaluma's annual salute to George Lucas' nostalgic car-culture primer, American Graffiti. So bright and early this morning, Maddie, Jennifer, and I wandered downtown to grab some coffee and gawk at classic cars. Here's what we saw...

Maddie: "If I ask nicely, do you think they'll give me a ...

But is it art?

Kimpton hotels are themed hotels: the Vintage Plaza in Portland was wine-themed, the Alexis in Seattle? Art, I guess. After all, there's a huge René Magritte knock-off in our room:

And there's a Rodin-esque head-shaped lamp, too:

But, disturbingly, there are also framed Rorshach test blot cards on the walls, leading to the question, "is it art, or just a bizarre psychological experiment?" So tell me, what do you see in these?

Fainting couch, sleeping dog...

Since forty is never enough, Maddie catches a few extra winks.

Got to love that steel-grey sky. Not to mention the masonry.

Bodega encampment. Hey locals: How's the food?

Ready for adventure!

Land of Port

We've arrived in Portland, and are planning our initial sortie into the city while Maddie rolls on our hotel room's carpet. So far, the Vintage Plaza is impressive. Here's one view from our room:

And another:

And here's Maddie:

So, let's go exploring!

Road-rattled, but comfortable...

"Wow!" exclaimed Maddie. "Carpet and stairs and breakfast? This place is awesome!"

And, speaking of awesome...
