Celebrate Do Nothing But Read Day

Allegedly, today is Do Nothing But Read Day, so that's exactly what we're doing. I'm working my way through a long, lavish manuscript while Jennifer devours a YA novel with an unlikable protagonist. And there's still plenty of day left in the day...

Earlier, we dropped Maddie at Petaluma Pet Groomer for her monthly clean-up, then grabbed a couple to-go lattes and attempted to run errands. We didn't get very far. An hour after dropping Maddie off, just as we pulled off the freeway in Novato...

Hydrocodone, or what it feels like to be thrown from a window...

At about five o'clock this morning, I came to a disturbing realization: Apparently, I'm allergic to hydrocodone.

I realized this as I wakened to waves of nausea, a massive headache, confusion, itching, and vomiting. Not fun. Right then and there I knew all my plans for the day had just fallen out the window.

While we're on the subject of windows, let me back up a little bit for context, lest you think I've been popping pills for fun. Yesterday, I had periodontal surgery, a reasonably routine p...

This blog in a nutshell: dogs, books, and beer

"Hey look, I found beer."

"That's clever. There's an eye instead of an 'I'."

"But I still say this stuff smells funny."

Sympathy for Touchdown Jesus and the Mountain Goats

Seems kind of appropriate that on the same day we sent Tim Pratt's Night Shade anthology, Sympathy for the Devil, to the printer, Monroe, Ohio's best-known graven image, Touchdown Jesus, was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. Could it be...?

Diabolic speculation aside, production on this book was a blast, everything came together like it was all part of some grand, infernal plan, and Tim was a pleasure to work with. So I'd like to dedicate this song, "The Best Ever Death Metal Band ...

I just did the math...

I just did the math and figured it out: Meg Whitman spent $81 million dollars in order to get a crack at a $212,000/year job. If she manages to get elected Governor without spending another dime*, she would need to stay in office 382 years in order to break even. That's only fiscally conservative if Meg's a vampire. Or the Wicked Witch of the West.

In either case, quick, somebody send Jerry Brown several buckets of holy water.

Quote of the day...

"He peers into the black pool of his unconscious mind, glimpses a flash of green, notes the exact shade and color and rhythm of disappearance--and then as much as a year later, in the course of actually writing a story, hooks and pulls out of that pool a seventy-tentacled green monster tall as a skyscraper."
