I spent time with the four little girls today.

I spent time with the four little girls today. We put up glow-in-the-dark unicorns on their ceiling, played freeze tag and statue, and they read me the books that they wrote and drew themselves. I am so proud of them for writing and drawing and being creative. They are such smart, creative, funny, playful girls.

They visited me with their mom this week and I showed them all the books I wrote (and have had published). They know I’m a writer but they’d never seen all my books together before. I think it gave them possibilities of what they can do if they ever want to. They had written and drawn their own books before but now they have created more. I love that. And I love them.

#chosenfamily #friendsarefamily
#creativity
#cherylrainfield #YAwriter #LGBTQwriter #booknerd #bookworm #ireadYA #survivor #feminist

#YAlit TO BEST THE BOYS by Mary Weber sounds awesome!

TO BEST THE BOYS by @maryweberauthor sounds awesome! Smart, strong-girl characters who dress up as boys to enter the labyrinth to try to win an all-boys scholarship to an all-male university, fighting back against oppression and misogyny while following their dreams. I am super excited for the Feb Uppercase box

I am super excited for the Feb Uppercase box that I got from generous reader and friend Lynn Postlewait. I just started CROWN OF FEATHERS by Nicki Pau Preto and already I’m loving it; just the first few pages tell me that it is beautifully written. And I am extra excited about it because it has a queer romance and racial diversity!
I love YA fantasy, especially with strong girls, and strong queer girls? Even more! Kudos to Uppercase for picking such a great book.

I also loved the quote magnet for CROWN OF FEATHERS, the positive-message postcard by Victor Hugo, and the Raised by Books pencil case from Out of Print. This is my favorite box yet! Everything here is absolutely perfect for me, like it was hand-picked! (beaming)

#crownoffeathers #nickipaupreto #lgbtqia #LGBTQ #YAlit #lgbtqiaYA #bookrecommendations #bookrecs #bookworm #ireadYA #uppercase #

I had such a lovely time tonight at illustrator Aino Anto’s and writer Shelley A. Leedahl’s booklaunch

I had such a lovely time tonight at illustrator Aino Anto’s and writer Shelley A. Leedahl’s booklaunch for THE MOON WATCHED IT ALL, held at indie Toronto children’s bookstore Mabel’s Fables. Shelley read the entire book to us while Aino showed us the illustrations, and it was such a powerful, moving book about loneliness and not fitting in, moving to finding each other and chosen family. It felt so good to be read to, the words and illustrations wrapping around us to create a vivid story world.

I got my copy signed by both, connected with #kidlit & #YAlit writer & illustrator friends, and of course Petal got a ton of love from people and gave it to them as well. It was a beautiful evening, and I am so proud of Aino and Shelley for their new book.

Pictured with me and Petal are illustrator Aino Anto (pics 1—4), Shelley Leedahl (pic 3); YAlit and kidlit writer Lena Coakley (pic 5), and Red Deer editor Peter Carver (pic 6), whose writing critique course I took for ten years before SCARS was published, giving me encouragement, community, and greater confidence in myself as a writer. (I should have taken more pictures; I saw so many good people I truly enjoy – but I forgot!) @aino_anto_illustration @mabelsfablesbookstore

#ainoanto #shelleyaleedahl #kidlitillustration #kidlit #picturebooks #themoonwatcheditall #picturebook #bookrecommendations #bookrecs #bookstagram
#cherylrainfield #YAwriter #LGBTQwriter #booknerd #bookworm #ireadYA #survivor #feminist
#petalrainfield #chinesecrested #hairyhairless #dogstagram #ilovemydog #ilovemychinesecresteddog #dogmom
