It pains me to no end to witness the Democratic Presidential candidates form a circular firing squad in the debates, almost unanimously pushing policies that will guarantee four more years of Trump. They do so out of a sense of noble idealism, but what good are those intentions if they kill your chance of gaining power to enact progressive policies?

Leave it to the GOP to not only stymie continued progress, but slam-shift the country into reverse and head back to the good ole days, when women were forced to put their lives at risk with coat hangers and back-alley quacks to deal with an unwanted pregnancy.

The district attorney of Philadelphia, Larry Krasner, made a radical proposal in May: Instead of prosecuting and incarcerating those caught for the possession of drugs as criminals, they would be sent to treatment centers. “Possession is different than dealing. It’s different than carrying a bunch of drugs you intend to sell or deliver later,” said Mr. Krasner. “I do not see value in convicting people like that, thereby making it harder for them to get a job.”

The United States under our current leadership continues to set new records in the worst way. We lead the world in school shootings, prisoners per capita and deaths from drug overdoses. In 2018 another record was broken: the total time that wrongly convicted prisoners have lost served behind bars. According to the National Registry of Exonerations, a total of 151 people were freed last year after serving time for crimes they did not commit, for a grand total of 1,639 years.
