Street Team? Why Not?!

You asked and you shall receive.
Lots of readers have asked me when I'm going to start a street team. I have a small, core group of major fans who have gone way above and beyond for me and my books, but there are so many more of you who'd like to show your support by being more involved. So I did it - I started a street team!
Are you one of these big fans? Do you love the Soul Savers and the Book of Phoenix series? Do you think readers around the world deserve to know about these books? Can you help spread the word?

If you answered "yes" to all of these, you might want to become a member of Kristie's Warriors!

Kristie's Warriors is my brand new street team made up of readers who love my books and are committed to doing what they can to tell the world about them. We have a Warriors Creed and to be initiated, each member must take the Warrior's Pledge. As a member, you participate in Missions and Operations that help spread the word about my books, my characters and me as an author. Our first major task starts next week - Operation #KnightRiders to support Tristan in the NA Crush Tourney! (Of course, you can support him anyway - but that's another post coming soon.)
Missions are mainly internet-based, so you can participate without leaving your computer. They will be as easy as posting on Facebook, Tweeting, and commenting on blog posts, but can be more extensive, such as creating a meme, taking and sharing a picture of a book in the wild, and getting a business card from your local bookstore or library. Most tasks are individual but some will be done as a team - be ready to state your preference of Amadis or Daemoni.
In exchange, Warriors are the first to receive any book and author news (even before newsletter subscribers), participate in exclusive events and fun competitions, and are awarded with special swag. For example, be the first to see the next book's cover or to read an excerpt, or receive presents like bags, t-shirts, coffee mugs, and more! We have all kinds of exciting plans for this group.
To keep the group manageable, Kristie's Warriors has limited space available. If you're interested in showing your support, please complete the form below. Don't delay - I expect this to fill up quickly.
Before you complete the form, be sure you agree to The Warriors' Creed!
The Warriors' Creed

I believe Author Kristie Cook is among my favorite authors.I believe Kristie Cook’s books are among my favorite books.I believe readers around the world deserve to know about and enjoy Kristie Cook’s books.I believe in putting forth my best effort in helping spread the word.I believe Kristie’s Warriors is a place for reader camaraderie and support, for friendship, and first and foremost, for coordination and support of our Primary Objective: Tell the World About Kristie Cook’s Books!I believe in supporting others with positive and constructive messages, even when we disagree, and that negative communication is only harmful to ourselves and to others.I believe in upholding the highest of ethics and moral standards, which includes honesty, loyalty, empathy, service, fairness, personal and group honor.

Thanks for Helping OKC!

Wow, you guys! Look what we did!

That's the total we raised for the American Red Cross to help those folks ravaged by tornadoes in Oklahoma!

$2,857.00!!!
Seriously! Of course, that doesn't count all of you who had donated and forgot to send your receipts to me. I can only imagine what that number would be.

Thank you to everyone who participated! Your donations, buying my books so I'd donate $1 and spreading the word definitely made a difference.

As for our winner? Congratulations to...

Kari Y.!!!!
She's already been notified and is looking forward to receiving her swag bag full of signed books. Thank you, Kari, for your donation and your buys!

Although this little "fundraiser" is over, please don't hesitate to make a donation to the Red Cross. On the last day of my event, a tornado hit even closer to my Dad's home, as well as close to authors I know in the OKC and Tulsa areas. A blogger and my favorite book pimp had damage from bad weather in Illinois. Tornadoes aren't discriminatory anymore either - no longer targeting just Tornado Alley. There have been warnings in my hometown in Northern Virginia and other parts of the DC and Eastern Seaboard area this week. Tornado season technically winds down this month (as if Mother Nature follows the calendar this year), but hurricane season is gearing up and we've already had our first named storm. The Red Cross is going to need every bit of help they can get. So please consider donating as much and as often as you can.

Excerpt from Promise:

“Penny for your thoughts?” Tristan asked, breaking the silence as we crossed the boardwalk accessing the beach.
“Hmph. They’re worth more than that,” I teased.
He chuckled. “Okay, a Benji for your thoughts?”
“Huh?”
He pulled a one-hundred-dollar bill from his pocket. I raised my eyebrows and he put it away, laughing. “You’re right. Yourthoughts are priceless.”
We walked to the edge of the water, kicked off our shoes, and then turned and meandered along the wet sand. It gave me a chance to edit my thoughts before sharing them.
“I wouldn’t go that far,” I finally said, “but . . . I was just thinking that we’ve been hanging out for a couple months now, and I hardly know anything about you.”
“Ah. What do you want to know?” He peered down at me from the corner of his eye, seemingly hesitant—like I felt when someone asked about me.
“Um, well, where are you from?” That was an easy one, especially in Florida. Hardly anyone was from here.
He was silent for a moment, as if it was difficult to answer, and then said cryptically, “Lots of places . . . nowhere in particular.”
I could relate to that. It could be my own answer.
“So . . . you moved around a lot?”
He shrugged. “You could put it that way.”
“What do your parents do?”
“They don’t do anything. They died a long time ago.”
“Oh.” Oops. I didn’t know I was headed into heavy stuff. “I’m sorry.”
He looked down at me and smiled gently. “You didn’t know. I hardly remember them anyway. It was a long time ago. I was raised by . . . distant relatives, I guess you could say.”
“Did they bring you here?”
“Oh, no, I came here alone.” There was that steely undertone again. “I’ve been on my own for quite a while.”
More silence as I thought for a minute. I remembered what he’d told Mom . . . he’d never gone back and he never will. How awful it must be to lose his parents and then to have to live with what must have been dreadful relatives, people like Lenny. My theory must have been true. I decided to leave that subject alone.
“So where were these ‘lots of places’ you grew up?”
“Pretty much everywhere, but mostly Europe.”
Really?” That one surprised me. “But you don’t have any kind of accent.”
He chuckled.
“I’ve been in the U.S. for a few years and I adapt easily and pick up the local accent quickly.” He changed his tone and spoke with a perfect English cadence, “Would you rahther I hahd an ahccent?” Then he switched to French, rolling the R’s, “Or, pear’aps Francais eez better, ma lykita?”
I laughed. Although I couldn’t understand it all, the French accent was especially delightful with his lovely voice.
“Do you speak other languages, then?”
“Seven altogether.”
“Wow,” I breathed with awe. I tried to imagine growing up in Europe, living as transient a life as we had, but in places such as London, Rome and Paris. I probably glamorized it, but it seemed much more exciting than my life.
“If you came here by yourself, what brought you here?”
He didn’t answer at first and kicked at a wave. Then he shrugged and said, “Just needed a change.”“Oh.” That was a non-answer.
He looked down at me. “Actually, I want to be honest with you. I came here for a job . . . or an assignment is more like it . . . and stayed because I like the people.”
“Oh, okay.” I hadn’t realized he had a job. I started wondering what he did besides a couple college classes. He had mentioned once he had lots of other things going on in his life, but he never talked about anything.
“But if I told you any more, I’d have to kill you.” His tone was serious and I looked up in surprise. He laughed.
“Oh, I see. CIA or FBI?” I played along, remembering the old secret-agent movies Mom liked to watch. “Oh, wait, probably Scotland Yard. Or maybe the KGB?” I widened my eyes in mock horror.
He laughed again. “You’re way off.”
“I’ll figure it out,” I promised lightheartedly.
He frowned and his tone darkened. “Yes, I’m sure you will. Some day.”
“Would that be bad?”
The frown quickly disappeared, as if he hadn’t realized it was there until I said that. He peered down at me as we walked a few steps in silence. “I don’t know yet.”
Honesty and seriousness filled his tone . . . and a bit of sadness. I sighed in frustration. He raised more questions than he answered.
“Something wrong?” he asked.
I wanted to tell him how annoyingly cryptic he was. But I didn’t. Because he could always turn that back at me.
“No, I guess not.”
“We better turn around,” he said.
I looked behind us and saw we had walked much farther than I realized. We played in the water on the way back, kicking it up at each other and running away from the splashes, then he took my hand and pulled me to dry sand, where we sat to watch the sunset. We gazed in silence, both in the same position—knees pulled up, arms wrapped around our legs. I rested my chin on my knees.
God displayed His divine artistic ability, painting the sky with brushstrokes of dark violet, lavender, magenta and soft pink against a light blue canvas, with a bright splash of gold at the horizon reflecting on the water. Waves gently lapped at the sand and seagulls cawed at each other.  I inhaled deeply, trying to pull it all into my body and embed it in my memory as one of those perfect moments to be cherished forever. The brackishness of salt water and the sweet-tanginess of Tristan’s scent nearly intoxicated me.
I turned and Tristan cocked his head to look at me, his beautiful eyes sparkling, immediately calming me. In fact, I’d never felt so content. His conversation with my mom seemed vague and nonsensical now. He was right. She needed to let go. Because I wanted to be nowhere else than right here with him.

Quality Vs. Integrity

I could have called this post "Soul Savers 5 Release News," because I do have news for you. However, this news deserves more than a quick and simple announcement. Because, you see, although it may be simple, it's not easy. Not for me. And you, my awesome readers, deserve more.

Which is really what it's all about.

"Um ... what?" you say. Let me explain by starting with a couple of examples.

Example #1 - An Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance series that's extremely popular, best-selling, with a TV show and everything. I started reading it years ago. I stopped a little over halfway through because the author was losing me. The quality of the stories had gone from good to meh, and when the next book came out, I just wasn't interested at the time. I've never caught up. I've heard it's gone downhill even more, so I probably never will.

Example #2 - An Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance series that's extremely popular, best-selling, doesn't have a TV show but should, with a fabulous on-going story line. I've only read the first six because they came in a box set. There's no specific reason I haven't caught up, except that the books haven't been right at my fingertips like the hundreds that are on my shelves and my ereader. I've heard the most recent release is amazing. I can't think of any fans who have complained about their interest sliding as the series progresses.

I've always been scared to death that the Soul Savers Series would become like Example #1. With each book, I've worked hard to make it better than the last one. Readers tell me the series keeps getting better, and if reviews are any indication, that must be true. I really like this trend. I want to stay on it. I want you to love each book just as much if not more than the others. I want to be Example #2.

But this is where my integrity comes in. See, at the end of last August, when we were getting ready to release Power, we didn't want to leave you hanging with nothing about the next book. So I at least gave you a release time of Spring 2013. That was 8-9 months - surely I could have it written, revised, edited, polished, and formatted by Spring.

At that time, however, I didn't expect to be going to the London Book Fair, doing a UK tour and attending RT Booklovers in Spring 2013, causing me to basically lose a full month of productivity. I also didn't anticipate writing and releasing another book - The Space Between - right before then. Toward the end of 2012, when we started looking hard at our 2013 production calendar, I figured, "Well, June 21st is technically the first day of Summer, but I can do it. I've made a promise, and hopefully this is close enough to Spring 2013 that readers will forgive me."

So way back before I even started writing the book, I publicly announced a release date. I also made a commitment to myself to write more and write faster. After all, I'm a writer. I'm a full-time writer now. Others produce lots faster than I do, so I need to pick up the pace. I. Can. Do. This.

Except I can't. I can't bring myself to rush my writing and editing process just to get a book out on a certain date although it may not be the best it could possibly be. I cringe every time I read a book that's been hurried to market before it's ready. Indies have been slowly overcoming the low quality stigma, only for it to return as these rushed books are full of errors. Some have even become best-sellers, but the poor editing and proofreading is going to backlash on all of us. I can't bring myself to contribute to that. I also can't bring myself to destroy my health and family and home life any more than I already have.

Most of all, I can't bring myself to disappoint you. As I said in the beginning, you deserve so much more from me. You deserve the best damn book I can possibly write for you. You deserve an amazing story that you can't put down until the last page is turned. You have stuck with me and the series thus far - you deserve only my best.

And I've made the decision, along with my publisher, that you deserve a high quality book that you'll get to read one day this summer, rather than a crappy story you might read on a specific day in June. I hate - let me say it again, HATE - backing out on a release date. I've never missed one before and usually deliver early. I feel like I'm breaking a promise, and it's killing me.

But ... I've also set a promise of a good book for you. I hope Soul Savers Book 5 won't break that promise, especially since you have to wait even longer for it. I know right now, though, that if I were to release it on June 21st, you would totally hate it. And I'd rather keep the promise of quality than the promise of a date (which means I won't be giving a specific date right now - just sometime this summer).

So I guess it's not really quality vs. integrity. It's quality and integrity. I can live with that. I hope you can, too. *pleading smile* okay *drops on knees and begs and kisses your feet*

I thank you in advance for your understanding and support and forgiveness. Like I said, I hope the story in Book 5 will make up for it.

Bottom line:

Soul Savers 5 Coming Summer 2013

Help Me Help OK!

My dad, stepmom, stepsister and her family live in the Oklahoma City area so you can imagine the terror I felt yesterday when the news started coming in, especially since I couldn't get a phone call through. Fortunately, they are all okay. Sadly, there are a lot of people hurting today and they will be for some time - some parents and loved ones will never fully recover.
When I was a newspaper editor and reporter in Kansas, I had to cover tornado damage. My heart broke every single time, although there'd been no human deaths in the ones I covered. The devastation is like nothing you can imagine unless you've seen it for yourself. The loss of animal life is gut-wrenching. I remember a young girl having to watch the sheriff put her horse down because it had landed in a ditch thousands of feet away from its barn, its back broken.
My husband's aunt lost her home and their belongings in a tornado in 2008.
Yes, this hits very close to home. No, I can't not do something for the people of Moore, OK.
So I will be donating to the Red Cross $1 for every book I sell from now through May 31, 2013.
I hope you will join me. Like last year's drive for The Domestic Violence Hotline, I have something for everyone who buys my books during this time or donates to the Red Cross:
Email me** your receipt(s) for any of my books with the purchase date between today and May 31, 2013, and you'll be entered to win a giveaway of all of my signed books plus swag. Gift receipts count! For everyone who makes a donation to the Red Cross for $10 or more and emails me** a receipt (dated 5/20/13-5/31/13) and their shipping address, I'll send you a pack of fancy bookmarks and a Kristie Cook can-coozie.
Remember - if you've already bought all my books, you can gift them! All ebook retailers allow gifting. Links for each book are below. And to make it even better - The Space Between is on an ENT special so it's only 99c for Kindle. But hurry! That deal won't last.
You can easily donate $10 to the Red Cross by texting Red Cross to 90999. Your donation will be added to your cell phone bill. Otherwise, you can donate here: https://www.redcross.org/donate/index.jsp?donateStep=2&itemId=prod10002
If you can't afford to buy/gift books or make a donation, I hope you will at least forward this to everyone you know, share it on social media and otherwise help me spread the word. My readers are AMAZING and I can't wait to see what you can do for this great cause!
**Send your receipts and contact info to [email protected]. If you donate via phone text, take a screen shot of the confirmation and email it to me. (Free downloads of Promise are not included in this event.)
Thank you in advance for your help!!!

My traveling companions, Jody and Chrissi, with me in front of Buckingham Palace not too long after landing in London. We carried those coffee cups for HOURS because there are no public trash bins in London.
A drink at our first London pub after checking out Harrod's. We're about ready for bed, though it's only about 5 p.m. local time.
Heather and me on the London Eye with Big Ben and Westminster Abbey in the background.
Inga from Estonia and the Me and Reading book blog. I still can't believe we got to meet in person! We're getting ready to watch The Bodyguard on stage here.
Oh, yeah, we went to the Warner Bros. studios where they filmed Harry Potter.
Chrissi and Heather on Hagrid's motorcycle with the Knight Bus behind them.
Chrissi and Heather in front of the actual model they used for filming Hogwarts.
Me with Christina, owner of Treadwell's Books (the location of the London signing), and her assistant Diane.
The European half of my Kristie's Crew, who helped coordinate the entire UK tour.
After London, we headed for York, where we got a 2-day tour in 3 hours. This is the York Minster. Beautiful! York was my favorite place of the whole tour, full of history. I hope to go back with the family some day. Part of our tour of York included proper English tea at Bettys Cafe Tea Rooms. YUM!
Readers who came to the signing in York. He wanted to kidnap me and keep me until I told him the whole Soul Savers story!
The Crew at the York signing.
Heather and me in front of the tower in York - all that remains of the York castle - during our ghost tour.
Now we're in Liverpool! And getting a little close with John Lennon in front of The Cavern, the first place the Beatles performed.
The Duckmarine we rode for a tour of Liverpool.
A fan at the Liverpool signing!
This was us A LOT - either in a cab or on a train.
The four of us Americans in Birmingham.
The Crew at the Birmingham signing. There was a LINE (queue) at the Birmingham signing! I couldn't believe how many people came out! I couldn't possibly get everyone's pictures here, but I snagged a few to post.

Me with Donna, manager at Bebo Cafe, the location of the Birmingham signing. She is now a fan of the Soul Savers, having read all four books over the last few days!
Kate, who made this fabulous TSB banner for the Birmingham signing.
Off to Bristol now! On Sunday, our last day in England, we woke up in Birmingham, traveled to Bristol, then went to bed in London. Here's me with a fan at the Bristol signing.
The Crew at the Bristol signing - about to say our final good-byes.
The gorgeous Bristol train station - about all we saw in Bristol, as our time was short.
A common sight for us - a train station!
Back in London, the night before we fly home. This is our last pint at an English pub. There are so many more photos I could share! We had a wonderful time with some amazing hosts throughout the tour. A special shout-out to Julie, Claire, Stacey, Debbie, and Kate for all of their hard work and assistance. Hopefully we'll be back soon!

What's Better Than a Booklovers Convention?

I made it home from England a week ago and now I'm packing up again. Time to head off to Kansas City for the RT Booklovers Convention ! I attended this con last year and absolutely loved all of the interaction with authors, bloggers, readers, agents, publishers, etc. It truly is a convention of book lovers - my favorite kind of people. I can't wait to see some of you again and to finally meet many others in person!

I'll be signing at the EXPO on Thursday, 4-6 p.m. If you're in the area, I hope you can make it! I'd love to see you. There are also some exciting events open to the public on Saturday, including another huge signing, Teen Day and FANtastic Day. An awesome chance for you to meet authors, bloggers and other reviewers. I'll be meeting, mingling and signing at the FAN-Tastic Day party Saturday evening.

If you can't make the EXPO, RT and AllRomance have a special going on for everyone at home, too, no matter where you live! Check this out for how you can participate from your armchair.

I'd hoped to have some pics for you today from the UK Tour, but it's taking forever to download them all. As in over 1,400 of them!!! So I will get those posted when I return from Kansas City next week. There are several already posted over on the Facebook page , though. Also, watch FB for photos from RT - we'll try to get some up while we're there.

Have a fabulous week! I know I will, surrounded by book lovers.

P.S. Don't forget to get your final entries in for The Space Between Release Tour giveaway . Tomorrow night (4/30) is the last day to enter.
