“We walked to the back of the line of the one-register fast-food restaurant. Before I could ask him what he wanted, Alvin tapped the shoulder of the woman in front of us. She turned around, startled. “Hey,” Alvin said, “I’m that feller they said kilt his wife, but I didn’t kill my wife, and the jury just said that I didn’t kill my wife!” Then he did his characteristic spring back, hands on hips, as if saying, What do you think of that? The woman turned and fled the establishment. “Okay, Alvin,” I said, “that was a good start. Just don’t sneak up on ’em like that next time.” I added, “And don’t lead with that you were accused of murder.” We sat at Hardee’s and enjoyed our meal, and then I took Alvin Ridley, a free man and an innocent man, home.”
