Sometimes there will be music. Sometimes there will be dancing. Sometimes there will be video. Sometimes there will be swimming. Sometimes there will be surprises. Sometimes there will be raffles. Sometimes there will be fancy food. Sometimes there will be fancy drinks. Sometimes it will rain and you should bring an umbrella. Sometimes it will be chilly and you should bring a blanket. It is called the Fair Weather Reading Series for all of these reasons and more.

Musician Liza Day

JANICE LEE currently lives in Los Angeles where she is editor of the #RECURRENT Novel Series, Assistant Editor at Fanzine, Executive Editor at Entropy, and Founder/ CEO of POTG Design. She is the author of KEROTAKIS (Dog Horn Press, 2010), Daughter (Jaded Ibis, 2011), Damnation (Penny-Ante Editions, 2013), Reconsolidation (Penny-Ante Editions, 2015), and The Sky Isn’t Blue (Civil Coping Mechanisms, 2016). LIZA DAY is a singer/songwriter and Wisconsin native who, along with her 5piece band from Chicago, is rooted in the alternative country tradition. Liza is a graduate and former artist in residence of The Contemporary Music Center in Martha’s Vineyard. She leads the band with an unforgettably warm and pure voice skillfully combined with performances as vulnerable and sincere as the songs she’s written. Musically the band’s style can be described as classic country layered with a raw, untidy, rockabilly vibe. Their 6 song EP titled, One For Courage was released in October of 2012.

THE BRAIN is wider than the sky,

For, put them side by side,

The one the other will include

With ease, and you beside.

-Emily Dickinson

Wider Than The Sky is a one-day celebration of poetry on the page, on the stage, and in the world.

We invite all middle school and high school students from the greater Los Angeles area to join us for an engaging, inspiring day of workshops, panels, performances, readings, and conversations to explore and experiment with the art and craft of poetry.

The event features keynote speaker Jacqueline Woodson, named 2015 Young People’s Poet Laureate by The Poetry Foundation. Copies of her National Book Award-winning memoir in verse, Brown Girl Dreaming, will be gifted to LAUSD guests, and Woodson’s keynote will be followed by a book signing.

Also featured are acclaimed writer and educator Douglas Kearney as master of ceremonies, and a diverse group of nationally renowned poets including Entropy editor in chief Janice Lee, West Hollywood Poet Laureate Steven Reigns, and Urban Word’s Los Angeles Youth Poet Ambassador Khamal Iwuanyanwu.

Admission is free, and complimentary transportation is available to LAUSD school groups; breakfast and lunch will be provided.
