Tonight ten poet-performers take on the movies by writing scripts that re-tell scenes from seven feature films, using them to repackage aspects of the history of our continent. The practice of counter-dubbing films with alternate soundtracks became ubiquitous in the 20th century. But almost from the beginning of cinema live orators and narrators were available to mediate the image on the screen, either for documentary films without inter-titles, or for imported films whose titles were in a foreign language, or indeed in Japan where the film industry grew around the star status of the benshi narrators, creating films designed to be narrated live by the actors who wrote the tale and voiced the characters. Sometimes called “movie telling” or “neo-benshi” or glossed as performance art, the seven pieces tonight will take scenes from different feature films and torque them with sometimes comic, critical, or poetic interpretations, all relating in some way to the history, or alternate history, of North America. Short scenes from Robocop, Gravity, The Sound of Music, Chinatown and others will be retold

Drunken Masters / Sept. 9
Drunken Masters – 8pm (part of DTLAB organized by Writ Large Press)
A new works-in-progress reading series that puts you in front of established writers–who may or may not be sober.
Each session two professional writers are invited to be “first responders,” giving feedback to our readers and facilitating a conversation with the writer and audience.
We’re calling it “Drunken Masters,” becuase we’ve bribed our professional writers with the promise of booze (or in some cases chocolate) to share with us their wisdom. It will be fun and laid back, so take a risk, and share with us that new story, poem, pitch or script you’ve been working on.
If you would like to sign up to read a 7-9 minute excerpt of a new work, email [email protected].
This installation features three of the most unique and innovative poets, writers, and artists in our community:
Jen Hofer
Janice Lee
Andrew Choate

ENTER>text: in the Air / Sept 7
5PM Sunday, September 7
Things are different up here. We can’t quite hear the city. We can barely make out the lights through the valley. But something’s not right. Maybe this isn’t our house; maybe these aren’t our memories. It’s almost like we’re being monitored. Like we’re under surveillance by tiny machines or giant eyes. Is there a world outside anymore? Where is the glow from our windows leading us? What they say about a watched pot has never been true.
Come on up,
Diana Arterian // Sam Bloch & Mark Gerard // Andrew Choate // Claire Cronin & Meriwether Clarke // Stacy Elaine Dacheux & Danielle Sommer // Kate Durbin // Stephen Van Dyck // Emma Zakes Green // Brigitte Nicole Grice // Dan Hockenson // Jen Hofer & Yelena Gluzman // Jen Hutton // Emily Kiernan // Janice Lee & Laura Vena // UNFO (with Harold Abramowitz, Amanda Ackerman & Andrea Quaid) // Matias Viegener // Writ Large Press (with Peter Woods & Chiwan Choi)

We’ve been hearing strange things about you. We’re not quite sure what to believe. We think it would be best to discuss it in person, and even then, maybe not out loud. You have to catch these rumors early, right, clear things up before they spiral out of control.
Yours,

A Landing Site for Madeline Gins is a tribute to the late artist, architect, and poet who, together with her partner Arakawa, established the Reversible Destiny Foundation in 1987, a dynamic platform for collaboration across the sciences, art, and architecture. Gins started as a poet and published numerous books including Word Rain (or A Discursive Introduction to the Philosophical Investigation of G,R,E,T,A G,A,R,B,O, It Says) (Grossman, 1969), What the President Will Say and Do!! (Station Hill Press, 1984), and Helen Keller or Arakawa (Burning Books with East/West Cultural Studies, 1994). In 1997, Michael Govan presented the exhibition Arakawa/Gins—Reversible Destiny/We Have Decided Not to Die at the Guggenheim Museum of Art, and an exhibition about Arakawa is in the works, curated by LACMA’s Christina Yu.
