Review: Catwoman/Tweety & Sylvester Special #1

graphicpolicy:

Catwoman/Tweety & Sylvester Special #1 is complete insanity and a lot of fun #comics

It’s Wednesday which means it’s new comic book day with new releases hitting shelves, both physical and digital, all across the world. This week we’ve got the return of Looney Tunes and DC Comics coming together for a series of one-shot specials!

Catwoman/Tweety & Sylvester Special #1 is by Gail Simone, Inaki Miranda, Eva De La…

media-exegesis:

Getting amped up for this year’s DragonCon, and for the return of our impersonations of the fabulous @gailsimone creation, the Secret Six! My wig is freshly sprayed, Scandal’s tattoo is printed, Deadshot’s eye is charged, and Ragdoll is warming up with some back bends.

This picture was taken last year at the SCF DC photoshoot by Allen Finley, of Allen Finley Fine Art & Photography, https://m.facebook.com/AllenFinley.Photography/. We think it turned out pretty rad.

SO BADASS

sapphywatchesyousleep:

Many years ago now, when I was only just starting to read comics, or even really be aware of comics, I read a very good fanfic in which a character from the real world met the Secret Six. This character was absolutely terrified of Ragdoll, having read Villains United as a kid and been creeped that hell out by him. I’d never heard of the Secret Six before, but I was instantly fascinated by the description of this character who looked like a child’s toy and moved like a nightmare, so I picked up Villains United. And then every issue of Secret Six. And then I fucking cried over the ending. (I am still not over that ending).

I loved all the characters, but Ragdoll most of all. It was the first time I ever remember knowingly seeing a queer character. I have vague memories of seeing cisgender gay or bi characters, although mostly firmly of the ‘written by straight people’ variety, and they were important, but no-one with the kind of complicated ‘I’m not straight or cisgender but it’ll take too long to explain it just call me queer’ identity I have. I remember clearly looking at Ragdoll and thinking ‘holy shit, there’s someone like me in this book’.

Even if he hadn’t been queer, and talked openly about his gender identity and sexuality, I still would have loved him as a character. Ragdoll is absolutely creepy, he’s meant to be creepy, but he’s also sweet and damaged and funny and just happy a lot of the time. You don’t often see non cis characters or characters with deeply traumatic backstories just being happy the way Ragdoll usually is. That meant a lot to me as well.

We’re not going to be seeing him in comics for a while (although no one really stays dead in comics so I hold out hope) so I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank Gail Simone for creating him. You made a queer teenager very happy.

Thank you so much for these kind words.

I received an unbelievable amount of commentary and mail over the years saying similar things that Ragdoll meant a lot to so many people, many of whom did not feel represented elsewhere.

Ragdoll says and does a lot of awful things but I think what makes him valuable to many is that he doesn’t apologize for who he is, and he rejoices in being Ragdoll. The judgment of other doesn’t ever come close to touching him. He literally could not care less. He’s made his world and nothing will change him.

I think also, he came from a trauma that a lot of people can relate to; physical and mental abuse. This is always tricky stuff because it can be so exploitative, but I also think there is a lot of value to there being stories of people surviving such an upbringing.

‘I also think it means something that Ragdoll does find a family, even if they are mercs and banshees and killers. He does find a place.

Sometimes, writing the book, I would relate to one character more than another for a time, but I always came back to Ragdoll as the person who maybe says the wrong thing and came from rough beginnings to try to make art anyway.

I’m glad Ragdoll was there for you, and this note means so much.
