I have no idea why, but if you stand at the center of this spot in Portland’s Pioneer Square, and speak, your voice will sound robotic.

This production, directed by Michael Streeter, has been selling out, and, when I saw it last night, I understood why. It’s a brilliantly original interpretation—Judas is played by a black woman, the astonishing Ithaca Tell (who recently played Othello, and I wish I’d seen that), and Jesus marries Mary Magdalene. In a wonderfully Brechtian touch, people swarm around the resurrected Jesus, brandishing cell phones, to take selfies with him.
