His Holiness The Dalai Lama is 81 today. As I wrote in this review of his book Beyond Religion, his importance as a religious teacher often eclipses the fact that he is also one of the greatest political philosophers of the last hundred years.

I’ve heard him speak twice, and was fortunate enough to meet him briefly at Samye Ling monastery in Scotland on a snowy day in May 1993. I’ve always admired his willingness to answer questions with a frank“I don’t know.”
