Good Prayers, Great Sex, Terrible Title!

From the Perfect Edge Trinity Tour

About the book: Pratt has fallen upon strange times.

Father Johnstone, who’s served at the helm for the past thirty years, has begun to lose his flock. He dispenses poor marital advice and indulges in the company of lusting widows, both of which he can hardly remember doing. The pastor has never felt more unlike himself, and Madeline Paige—the town’s newest resident—believes she knows the reason. What she reveals will compromise everything Father Johnstone has ever known. Meanwhile, two men beyond Pratt’s county lines administer their own brand of faith. Billy Burke, the truck-stop preacher, tours the Bible Belt advising blue-collar workers how to properly assault a meth-hooker and the best way to protest gay nightclubs. He’s destined to meet a man that’s been operating out of Las Vegas under many different names, experimenting on a myriad of escorts using Christian lingerie, pious role-play, and Biblical paraphernalia. Together, they will push the threshold, and the town of Pratt will serve as the battleground for when faiths clash and lives hang in the balance.

Get Good Sex, Great Prayers through Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

My Review:
A fabulously amazing and all kinds of other fancy words that mean awesome book. Good Sex, Great Prayers is full on religious transgression in every way. From sexual content to questions about the power and efficacy of prayer this book doesn't hold back. It's beautifully descriptive, even in the most horrific scenes you can't escape the authors delicious use of language. And there is horror, violence and gore. And sex, lots of really raw images of transgressive sex. The concept of sex and faith being the most powerful when they intersect is an interesting one, and one I imagine has quite a lot of people hesitant about this book. However, it's not anti-religion or Christianity, simply a new twist on how God Worship based religions and Earth Worship based religions could have evolved together. The underlying questions of power and corruption are depicted in an over the top way, but the lesson remains and I think at the end of the book, what you'll find is that power comes at a great price, but those who wield it for the good of others are blessed.

Readers should note, this is written in third person omniscient with the POV changing not only within chapters but sometimes within paragraphs. However, it was well done and clear who was speaking at all times. I didn't find this to be an issue.

About the author: Brandon Tietz is the author of Out of Touch and Good Sex, Great Prayers. His short stories have been widely published, appearing in Warmed and Bound, Amsterdamned If You Do, Spark (vol. II), and Burnt Tongues, the Chuck Palahniuk anthology. Subliminal Messiah by Anthony David Jacques review – 3 Stars

While this was a great book with a fascinating and original concept, some points pulled it down due to it's lack of cohesiveness. What I really liked was the structural style of having a character who could see the future and then flipping that on its head. What does someone whose entire life has had a map for each event do when that's ripped away from them? I loved this premise and the character Jacques introduced was 3 dimensional and believable.

Unfortunately, in the interest of plot, the characters behaved inconsistently at times. The biggest example of this is the kidnapping scene. Why would the main character, after being kidnapped, suddenly start divulging all his deepest darkest secrets. The relationship between NAME and Heath made no sense to me what so ever. Why would he ever let this guy into his life. It seemed to be nothing more than a plot device. However, IF we are to buy into this, it also didn't go far enough. I absolutely thought that Heath and Eddie were in cohoots to make money off this story, the fact that this, or some other more extreme consequence wasn't explored was a weak choice.

Overall, it was a good read, but unsatisfying and requiring a lot of “Ok, I guess...” on the reader's part.

The Atheist's Prayer by Amy R. Biddle – 5 stars

I received a copy of The Atheist's Prayer from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The Atheist's Prayer by Amy R. Biddle – 5 stars

This is an excellent book. The author has given us a profoundly unlikeable character in the beginning and interwoven the POV of an eight year old boy and a woman who is clearly deranged. The genius here is in the details. Biddle's writing reads so authentic in each character's voice that it's possible to get lost in their thoughts and believe what they are telling you is real.

The storyline is surprisingly straightforward, without any huge twists or unexpected surprises. However, there is tremendous change and transformation within the characters, keeping the reader invested in every word.

My only editing notes are:

Spelling in the title of Meta Data is wrong – Athiest's instead of Atheist's. It's correct in the cover art.

And at Location 1704. There's a sudden shift in setting and plot after Lizzie letting herself into the apartment. Before that we're in Hank's POV, after that we're in Kevin's and back at Lizzie's house. It's jolting and surprising.

A timer beeped in the kitchen and Candy waltzed out of sight. As soon as she disappeared, there was a knock on the door. Before Hank realized what was happening, Lizzie let herself in. Lizzie hung up. ///////ABRUPT CHANGE HERE//////// “What do we have here?” she asked, placing her hands on the worn pages of the Bible. Kevin had opened the book to Corinthians, Chapter Six. The name looked familiar, even though he couldn’t pronounce it. He began reading the words. “Dare any of you, hav-ing a matt-er

The Atheist's Prayer by Amy R. Biddle

About the book: After a solar eclipse nearly two years ago, nineteen people were found dead in a remote area of the California National Forest. They were lying in a circle, holding hands and wearing plastic fairy wings.

Years later, on the other side of the country, no one in the southern city of Jefferson is concerned about fairies or fairy-worshiping suicide cults. Except for Candy. She might not have proof, but she’s damn sure it’s going to happen again.

The problem is, Candy is a coke-dealing stripper and the only person who will listen to her is an alcoholic mall Santa named Hank, who’s only listening because, well… she’s hot.

There are seven days until the next eclipse. Get The Atheist’s Prayer through Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

About the author: Born and raised in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Amy now spends half of her life at sea and the other half wherever the hell she pleases. An avid traveler and dangerous daydreamer, she is most at home when surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains or the great blue sea.

From Theatre to Taxes to Text

The journey of the self-defined individual isn't an easy one.

Every day we are told the rules we are supposed to follow. We are pounded with the reasons we must stay in line. Across the street, which we are never to cross, is another set of expectations. Follow your dream, you can achieve anything, you can be anything.

What we are never told is how to follow our dreams and stay in line. Eventually, one or the other will be disappointed. Eventually we are destined to fail.

For whatever reason, I was never really expected to stay in line. My father is a dreamer born into a world where achievement means everything and my mother is a free spirit, an adventurer, only allowed the path of nurse, secretary or wife. They had me later than most of their generation had their first child and for whatever reason they were always delighted to see me step slightly to the left of single file.

But the open road ahead is daunting and takes an incredible amount of work to survive on. I learned after college that for some it’s a road never destined to be taken. I would have been saved many a heartbreak had I learned it earlier. I was fortunate to find a job on Broadway. I had a theatre degree in dramaturgy (theatre theorist/historian) and to work on shows like Phantom of the Opera and Fosse was the pinnacle of success.

Even now when I tell people about working there it sounds so glamorous. Like another life. But the reality is I was miserable. Art is a business and commercial theatre is no different from any other profit-focused endeavor. I worked so hard I made myself sick. I cried and I crumbled.

Leaving theatre was one of the best decisions I made. Where it led me though was unexpected. After years of various jobs and training I am now an accountant. I have two small children and I work from home giving financial advice to small businesses and preparing tax returns. Who'd have thought? From the outside it seems so much less exciting. I'm no longer out till all hours or working with stars or opening to full houses. Now I am a rule follower and I really like staying in line.

But the dreamer my parents raised is still within me. And so as an adult I faced the same dilemma children must grapple with. Do I stay in this line or do I achieve a dream? My children are old enough they go to school. I love my work and don't want to stop. But I have a story to tell and it sings in my head, distracting me and pulling me out of sync.

Returning to art was difficult, it took a leap, a self-confidence I wasn't sure I had. But in the end these stories in my mind, this part of me that needs to skip instead of march, took over and demanded to be allowed to roam free.

Perhaps this basic dichotomy in my personality is why Indie Publishing appeals to me so much. I've stepped out of line; I don't want to just wait in another one.

Being involved in the Indie Community has been one of the best experiences of my life. I have reclaimed the artist and dreamer within me. I have made my own rules and am free to skip or run or twirl as I see fit. There are no hard and fast rules and each of us does what we can. If you need help, there are communities and groups and even some companies that will guide you, but no one can tell you the right way to do this.

For me the artist and the business woman are finally at peace, each finding the fulfillment they want. Lines and order and structure hold me in, but the creation of a new world, a new reality sets me free.

Celebrating Community Blog Hop!

I talk a lot about the great online community I'm in. I've been lucky to not have to deal with much of the cyber bullying and haters. They're out there, and it pops up now and then, but for the most part I've been blessed with some real genuine friends. In my real life too, my neighborhood is kind of like Mayberry, but with lesbians, which makes it all the better in my opinion.

We are currently in the month of Ramadan, a time of introspection, reflection, self-improvement, and spiritual devotion. While I'm not Muslim, you can probably already tell that I have an interest in religion and spirituality, and the rituals and practices that go along with both. For me, at the core of religion is our connection to each other, our community.

Ramadan concludes with Eid al-Fitr (“Eid” means festivity, while “Fitr” means breaking the fast), a celebration of community, togetherness, unity, and—yes—food. This year, I want to celebrate the breaking of the fast with you, my community.

If you check out the EID EVENT page on my blog you'll see a list of awesome bloggers who are participating and an even more awesome list of prizes being given away. All in the spirit of community. All you have to do is post during any/all of the events listed below and enter yourself into the giveaway. I hope you'll post, comment, and get to know your community a little better.
