Choosing the Right POV Characters
Last weekend I spent eight frustrating hours attempting to pummel a scene into shape.
Throwing out paragraphs, revising others, sharpening the character’s internal dialogue—nothing worked. Finally, the proverbial light bulb sputtered to life above my head: If I provided point-of-view (POV) for this particular character, I risked veering my mainstream novel into the fantasy genre, which wasn’t my intention.
Until now, all of my novelshave fallen somewhere between the women’s fiction category, wh...

Thoughts on the Holiday Season
Writers lead hectic lives, but I have a rule: slow it down during the holiday season.
I’ve done very little writing since the middle of December. What has consumed the hours instead? Time for reflection; leisurely hours baking cookies and organizing the house; and more time spent with family and friends. This year three of my four adult children will be home for the holidays and, as you can imagine, I’m quite excited!
There are other, year-end habits. Because I’m a tad superstitious, I ensure m...

YouTube, Book Feature, Oh My!
Several days ago I enjoyed my first YouTube video compliments of the great folks at eBookHounds. Special thanks to interviewer Patrick Port for making the Q&A stress free. If you’d like a glimpse of my writer’s lair (as well as my zany personality) you’ll find the interview here.
If you’re wondering why I was so giddy, the interview took place as the Second Chance Grill 99-cent sale was hurtling the novel up the Kindle and Nook charts. The eBook reached #56 on Amazon bests...

Make My Day!
There are seldom nights I fall into bed (the best feeling!) that I don’t wish there had been a few more hours in my day.
I always see this as a positive though; that my day was so good I want more of it, even if I didn’t have time to accomplish everything. I feed off the challenges and opportunities each daybreak presents.
In the years since serious writing became a part of my life, the distribution of time in my day has changed dramatically. Never in my wildest imagi...

As the Shark Writes
I wasn’t among the mourners when died. I barely recognized this iteration of her face, and I didn’t think her brand of comedy particularly funny. Other than another celeb death gone-wrong, the event barely flickered my needle. But the outpouring of emotion over her death and life intrigued me. She was a female pioneer in the field, and for that alone she merited a footnote in the comedic annals. But people were genuinely moved by her passing. Hmmh. So, I did some reading.
She was a...
