Alyssa Everett grew up in Florida, where from an early age her favorite books typically had dukes in them. As a teen she worked in an amusement park, doing just about every kind of odd job a person can do, from collecting garbage to captaining an African boat cruise.

She met her husband, a darkly handsome doctor with a wicked sense of humor, at Harvard University. They currently live with their three children and a springer spaniel in small-town Pennsylvania.

But I've discovered that when I run into writer's block, it's usually my subconscious telling me I'm trying to take the story down the wrong track. Either the plot has taken an implausible turn, or (more likely) I've made my hero and heroine do something that's not true to their characters. I try to figure out what that thing is, then go back and tear out everything I've written since that point. It can be painful to cut pages I've already written, but it usually gets me past my writer's block.(less)

How well should two people know each other before they marry? Better than these unhappy couples

When I was in college, one of my favorite instructors was a grad student who had met, proposed to, and eloped with the woman he married, all in the space of three weeks. They were blissfully happy together, and I hope that hasnt changed, because the theme of his story was the sheer madness of having married on such short acquaintance.

“Blushes and sighs are all very pretty, but soft words butter no parsnips.”

Topics Mentioning This Author

“Later, when they would spend straight hours conversing in the dark, Jane would realize that Henry kissed the way he talked- his entire attention taut, focused, intensely hers.”
Shannon Hale, Austenland

“No doubt she'd thought she was doing him a kindness, urging him to kick up his heels and loosen his too-tight cravat and learn to savor careless pleasures. As though he hadn't heard such urgings before, from every feckless acquaintance made uncomfortable by his example of propriety, or every heedless one who sailed through life never noticing that it was vigilant people, the people standing back from the merriment, who stomped out the fiery raisins dropped by others and kept everything from going up in flames.”
Cecilia Grant, A Christmas Gone Perfectly Wrong
