Reading habits

Right now I'm reading a few different books at the same time, and I'm wondering if I'm approaching the tipping point where it's too many simultaneously. Here's what I'm reading:

* The Fields by Kevin Maier, which I'm going to review for USA Today

* Subtle Bodies by Norman Rush, who's a writer I love (his novels about Botswana, especially Mating, are really special)

* A book about Nascar (He Crashed Me So I Crashed Him Back by Mark Bechtel, a really good sportswriter)

* S/Z, by Roland Barthes, a fun theoretical essay about Balzac

* In Search of Lost Time, by Marcel Proust, as part of a year-long project to read this whole long novel.

I'm juuuust about at that tipping point. A single newspaper article could push me over the edge. In general I like to read two or three books at a time, not more. Otherwise I feel like I'm not giving each book its attention.

On the other hand I don't like to read just one book at a time either. I get bored. I need at least two.

I'm curious about everyone out there: do you read one book at a time? Juggle a few? Pick up a book and put it down for a month before coming back to it?

What should I read?

My library list is a bit thin at the moment…I just finished Claire Messud's last book, I'm reading Beloved by Toni Morrison, and I have Heinrich Boll on deck.

What should I read after that? What's the last GREAT book you read?

What are you reading?

Midweek blahs. What are you reading? Anything good?

I just finished Sapiens and really enjoyed it...thinking about getting back to my Agatha Christie kick, since it's rainy and I have a lot of work and need some distraction :)
