Kelsea Jones is like a lot of girls at the University of Northern Minnesota. She has a boyfriend, she works at a coffee shop, and she’s on the swim team. But she’s not a girl. She’s a mermaid.
Trouble brews when star hockey player Chad Andersen takes an interest in her. She tries to avoid him, but he won’t leave her alone. A son of wealth and privilege, he takes what he wants, and he gets away with it. He wants Kelsea, she says no, and so he rapes her. Kelsea stands on a tail and two fins to fight the most painful trial of her life. Despite her trauma and a crisis of faith, she speaks the truth of what Chad did, but will she be believed?
A note from the author:
1 out of 4 college girls experiences rape or sexual assault. That breaks my heart. It’s a crime that has affected people I love, and it has to stop. This novel is my way of raising awareness and showing survivors that someone hears them.
Believed is a product of my friendship with a survivor who is an author and advocate. She opened my eyes to a world of trauma and PTSD that had been largely invisible to me before I met her, and it was life-changing. I needed to share that with others. The burden on my heart was too great to not say something, and fiction is the method I know best to convey the thoughts, truths, pains, and struggles that I see.
Sexual assault is not my story. I haven’t experienced it, I don’t live with the resulting trauma, and I do not wish to profit from the pain of survivors. This is a book for them. It’s a book for those who love them. It’s a book to encourage readers to think and to empathize and to consider the realities of so many whose lives have been affected by this crime. If you purchase a copy here, know that the prices are the minimum allowed. I make no royalty on print copies. If you would like to read for free, you can download the book at my website: https://www.michaeljamesemberger.com/believed
If you find value in this work, please consider donating to an organization that fights against sexual violence or offers support to survivors. Tell your family and friends about the book. Review it online. Let the survivors in your life know that you care, that you believe them, and that you are there for them.
Peek between the pages...
Mr. Johnson turns into my lot. “I’m sorry, Kelsea. I wasn’t optimistic, but I thought it would gobetter than that.”
I shiver. “They all lied.”
“Perhaps. As I said, the Andersens own the hospital. I expected something like this might
happen.”
“Do you—” I stop. Do I want to know?
“What?”
What can it hurt? “Do you believe me?”
Mr. Johnson is silent. My question lingers in the car. “Yes,” he finally says.
My heart sinks. He spoke the word, but I heard the answer. It was in that pause. It was a yes
with uncertainty behind it. It was a yes with conditions attached. It was a yes with an asterisk.
He pulls to the curb. “Look on the bright side. You won’t have to testify in a courtroom, and you
won’t have to face the defense lawyers. It will be a lot easier this way. Life can turn upside
down when these things get out in the media. It gets nasty. But if it goes away now, no one gets
hurt.”
I unbuckle my seatbelt, I get out, and I close the door hard enough that it rocks the car. I can’t
talk to him. I have no response that’s polite. My blood is boiling. He waves and pulls away, no
doubt happy to have dodged the bullet of dealing with this any further. He thinks we’ll drop it
and that will be it. I’ll be fine. I’ll just move on and forget about the most horrific thing I’ve ever
experienced. After all, it was just rape. What does it matter if they almost killed me? What does
it matter if the nightmares have only gotten worse? I’m better now. It’s not like I got hurt for
real, right?
I clench my fists and hop toward the nearest solid thing. I punch it. Once. Twice. Again, and
again. I batter it until my knuckles are covered in blood and foam and it lays mangled on the
ground. “Ah!” I scream. I sink to my knees on the snowy sidewalk. The cuts bubble and close.
The blood disappears. There’s nothing left except for the rage that’s consuming me. I’m not
okay. I’m not better. Not at all.
I sit and rock on my tail and shut my eyes against the world. It’s all wrong. Everything is wrong,
and there’s no God if this is what He has for me.
About Michael James Emberger:

Michael James Emberger is an author of thrillers and suspense residing in Wilton, NH. He enjoys weaving narratives of conspiracy and misguided intentions around divisive topics. Where there is debate, there is always room for a villain with goals far out of alignment from either side. Michael is a graduate of Messiah College, where he studied Engineering and met his wife racing solar cars cross-country. When he’s not working on home renovations or writing, he enjoys visiting the ocean and exploring the majesty of God’s creation on the summits of New Hampshire’s mountains.
Michael wrote Believed, a heartbreaking and inspirational tale of a Mermaid in college in Minnesota. It was the most difficult book he’s ever written, but also the most important. He’s made it available for free in audiobook and e-book formats, and he hopes it will encourage and inform.

Cover Reveal: Atticus Everheart Fifth Grade Tutor and Monster Hunter?
I'm delighted to share the amazing cover of my upcoming middle-grade novel ATTICUS EVERHEART, FIFTH GRADE TUTOR AND MONSTER HUNTER?
The cover artist, Diana Carlile, did an amazing job of incorporating different story elements into the cover. A big thanks to her and The Wild Rose Press!

Sometimes it takes an ordinary ten-year-old to save the day.
Book Blurb:
Nothing frightens Atticus Everheart more than monsters, thanks to his older brothers, who often threaten to feed him to the beastly creatures.
Fearing that’s what they will do if he doesn’t replace the book he accidentally ruined, he takes a job tutoring a boy in his neighborhood.
Although nervous about the job, Atticus soon discovers there’s a lot more in store for him than teaching. Never in a trillion years would he have imagined he’d be hiding from monsters, working with ghosts, or searching for werewolves and witches. He’s not brave, and he has no plans to change.
Until he’s forced to.

This sequel to Delphine and the Silver Needle delivers action, adventure, and magic in the most unexpected places.
Fresh off the heels of King Midnight's rat-army invasion at the Winterberry Ball, Delphine, Alexander, and Cornichonne are on the run, making their way through the far reaches of Peltinore. Unlikely allies pop up at every turn, but so do new enemies. While evading the rats hot on their tails, the trio uncovers new clues about the legendary Threaded tailor mice, including surprising discoveries about Delphine's magical needle. And as Delphine's powers grow stronger, she realizes she may need to head straight into Midnight's lair and confront the villain herself.
Will Delphine solve the mystery of the Threaded and save the kingdom from the nefarious rat king before it's too late?

Grab book 1, DELPHINE AND THE SILVER NEEDLE Now!
Peek between the pages...
The wall that had stood around the mouse city for centuries was crumbling. The invading rats were strong enough to claw straight through the stone. Inside, they streamed past the little farms toward the center of the mouse city. They ransacked homes, dragging innocent residents into the streets. Somewhere, a pinkie mouse was crying. The rats reached the elegant city square. Broad flagstones stretched toward a stone fountain. From high above, mice
watched in terror. The attackers spread, seizing torches from wall sconces. They smashed windows and threw the torches inside. Within moments, acrid smoke was curling angrily from the buildings.
At the edge of the square, a dappled mouse snuck out of a doorway, hood pulled down low. She held a scroll in one paw with a hastily scrawled warning to the other mouse cities. If she could escape unnoticed . . .
She tiptoed through the shadows, holding her breath, but a loose flagstone rattled beneath her paw. The sound was enough to attract the attention of the closest rat. He reached her with a single bound. She lashed out with her claws and he lashed back, throwing the mouse halfway across the square. She hit the side of the stone fountain and fell to the cobblestones.
“Find that needle!” screamed the rat leader, his fangs dripping with foam. “Find the mouse with the needle! For Midnight!”
The rats redoubled their attacks, tearing doors off hinges and ripping through walls. Screams echoed through the broad streets. No corner of the city was safe.
The mice could no longer defend their home. They turned tail and fled as the rats pursued them.
Next to the fountain at the center of the square, the dappled mouse lay crumpled against the rose vines that grew around the base. Two stone mice stood at the center of the fountain, gazing up at the golden spindle balanced between their paws.
A thin stream of shining water flowed down from the spindle like a silver thread. The dappled mouse’s eyes fluttered open. With great determination, she lifted her head to look up at the stone mice. “Arachne and Rhapso, watch over my city . . . ,” she began, but her words came thick. She gasped and fell back to the ground.
The air around the two stone mice shimmered silver for a moment, then drifted onto the rose vines. The statues remained cold and solid. But the thorns of the rose vines were now silver.
The rats had torn apart the city and found nothing. They moved on, hunting for the mouse with the needle. They would not fail, no matter how many cities they had to destroy.
In the mouse city, the fires burned, staining the stone walls black with soot. Not until snow began to flutter downward did the flames succumb. Soon, the ruins of the silent city lay under a blanket of white. Only the figures of Arachne and Rhapso remained, their stone eyes gazing into the distance.
The war had begun.
My thoughts...
This is the sequel to Delphine and the Silver Needle, but you don’t have to read the first book to know what is happening in this book. The author did a good job of weaving in the necessary details to thoroughly enjoy it. Of course, I do recommend starting with book one.
This middle-grade fantasy is action-packed. Delphine is easy to like, and her friends Alexander and Cornichonne are great.
Delphine must learn how to use the magic of the needle before King Midnight, the evil rat who has taken over the city, gains even more power. The journey isn’t easy. Not every friend can be trusted. Delphine’s biggest obstacle is learning to believe in herself. She is an ordinary mouse expected to do extraordinary things. The fate of the mice is in her hands. She faces each challenge with kindness and bravery and she has her friends to lean on when needed. This is a great message for kids, who are sure to devour the story and eagerly await the next book.
This was a fun and entertaining book.

Book Tour & Giveaway: DRESSING UP THE STARS

I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the DRESSING UP THE STARS: THE STORY OF MOVIE COSTUME DESIGNER EDITH HEAD by Jeanne Walker Harvey & Diana Toledano (Illustrations) Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Check out my post and make sure to enter the giveaway!
About The Book:

Author: Jeanne Walker Harvey & Diana Toledano (Illustrations)

Discover the true story of how a shy miner’s daughter became one of the most legendary costume designers in Hollywood in this inspiring nonfiction picture book biography.
As a child in the small mining town of Searchlight, Nevada, Edith Head had few friends and spent most of her time dressing up her toys and pets and even wild animals using fabric scraps. She always knew she wanted to move somewhere full of people and excitement. She set her sights on Hollywood and talked her way into a job sketching costumes for a movie studio.
Did she know how to draw or sew costumes? No. But that didn’t stop her!
Edith taught herself and tirelessly worked her way up until she was dressing some of the biggest stars of the day, from Audrey Hepburn to Grace Kelly to Ginger Rogers. She became the first woman to head a major Hollywood movie studio costume department and went on to win eight Academy Awards for best costume design—and she defined the style of an era.

My Thoughts...
I always enjoy learning about historical figures. Edith Head’s story is inspiring, and Dressing Up the Stars is a playful picture book that young readers are sure to enjoy. Edith’s story shows children that their background doesn’t matter. That a person can do anything they set their mind to. Edith didn’t have it easy, and some people told her she couldn’t be a designer. But she didn’t let that deter her. She continued to work hard, find her nitch, and through hard work became successful.
This is a book parents will enjoy reading to their kids.

Friends to the End, a Featured MG Book

Fall is coming, and I couldn't be more excited. The warm colors, rich smells, dip in weather, taffy apples, pumpkin pie, Halloween... it's my favorite season. And what better way to kick off the spooky season than with a ghost story?

If it's mildly spooky (I'm a wimp), has a fall theme, or something supernatural, I'm watching it. Do you have any movies you save for fall

Peek between the pages...
The usual cadre of fishermen dotted the docks. If I boldly stepped onto the ship, would they
know I didn’t belong? Could one be a sentry in disguise? I sauntered past, trying to catch a
glimpse of any crew hanging about. The boat was in complete darkness.
Gus waited on my favorite perch. “It’s about time you showed up. Why aren’t you in all
black so nobody can see you? God, you look like an amateur.”
“Perhaps because I am an amateur. I’m not the one with a criminal record.” I sat beside him.
“Who says I got a record? I ain’t never been locked up.”
It never occurred to me he’d never been caught. Maybe I should have consulted him—had
he bothered to show up earlier. “This way I blend in with the tourists. If anybody comes, they’ll
think nothing of a woman enjoying the fresh air.”
“You got a lot to learn.”
Breaking and Entering 101 wasn’t a class I wanted to take. “Enough about my lack of
burglary skills. Go check the boat, and tell me if anybody is aboard.”
“Okay, okay. Stop barking orders.” He disappeared.
I tapped my foot on the wooden dock, concentrating on the staccato noise. It soothed my
racing mind as it conjured all the things that could go wrong. My plan had two parts—break in
and don’t get caught. Simple, right?

Book Blitz & Giveaway: MacKenzie's Last Run by Gayle Rosengren

I'm delighted to be a part of the MacKenzie's Last Run by Gayle Rosengren blitz hosted by Goddess Fish Tours. Gayle Rosengren will be awarding a $100 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.
About the book

Blurb
Thirteen-year-old MacKenzie (Mac) Lawrence secretly blames himself for his father’s death. In his grief and guilt, he has pulled away from everyone, even his twin sister Tessa. When their mother announces her plans to remarry barely 18 months after Dad’s death, Mac is furious and runs away in an attempt to force her to break off the engagement.
Unfortunately, nothing goes as Mac plans. He ends up seriously injured, miles from home, unable to reach out for help, while clues he inadvertently left behind suggest he’s been kidnapped—possibly by Mom’s fiancé—and set his twin sister Tessa on a desperate search to find him. But she’d better hurry, because the clock is ticking, and Mac is running out of time.

Peek between the pages…
Tessa stiffened. Her heart fluttered. She’d thought of someplace where Mac might be hiding! It would be the perfect spot! Sheltered and totally private at this time of year. She was right. She knew she was right. He was there, just a few miles away. Close enough for him to run to, so he wouldn’t have needed his bike.
She leaped out of bed and ran down the hall to tell Mom. Her mother’s bedroom light was on, and she was dressed and sitting in her reading chair, but her head was slumped to one side. She was sleeping. Tessa hesitated. Mom would be so disappointed if her hunch turned out to be wrong… Maybe it was better not to get her hopes up. If Tessa was right, she would wake her up later with Mac standing beside her. And if Tessa was wrong, Mom would never have to know.
Tessa turned off the light and backed out of her mother’s room. She’d go by herself. She’d take her bike and be there and back in half an hour. Maybe less. She just had to put her jeans and sweatshirt back on, and her socks and shoes, all of which took forever because her hands were all of a sudden shaking like mad.
It’s no big deal, she told herself as she tiptoed down to the garage for her bike. But who was she kidding? It was a very big deal. She was going out alone in the middle of the night. Out in the country where anything, anyone, could be hiding in the darkness.

Roman Briggs built a life for himself in Siren’s Cove. He restored the Sugar Cones Ice Cream Parlor and turned it into a popular stop along the boardwalk. He has everything he needs until a certain blue-eyed woman wanders back into his life.
Seer and witch Peyton Woods isn’t sure why her latest visions feature a man and boy she’s never met. Determined to find out, she casts a spell that leads her to a small beach town in Maine and, to her utter surprise, the man who broke her heart eight years earlier.
Peyton's left with one question. Why didn't her magic show her him?

Some fun, miscellaneous facts about this book...
One of my favorite passages from the book:
I flipped on the light. I wore a wreath of daisies identical to Jinx’s. Worse, I was no longer wearing the outfit I had on yesterday when I left for the festival. Instead, I wore the white knit sundress from my dream. I started to doubt my choppy memories were a dream.
I lifted my left hand. A braided ring of flower stems circled my ring finger.
Jinxed barked.
I whipped around and pinned my familiar with a horrified glare. “What do you mean I got married?”
=*^_^*=
This isn't the first time Peyton Woods appeared in one of my books. We first met the carefree witch and seer in Merry Little Wishing Spritz. She's Cassie’s best friend, but she was itching to star in her own book. Salted Caramel Bliss with a Wedding Bliss Book Tour

Today kicks off the SALTED CARAMEL BLISS WITH A WEDDING KISS book tour hosted by RABT Book Tours. Check out the fun facts shared here, and then check out some of the stops on the tour to enter the giveaway!

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press
Series: One Scoop or Two (each book is a standalone book)
Blurb:

This isn't the first time Peyton Woods appeared in one of my books. We first met the carefree witch and seer in Merry Little Wishing Spritz. She's Cassie’s best friend, but she was itching to star in her own book. We get to know Peyton better in Salted Caramel Bliss with a Wedding Kiss as she follows a spell to a small seaside town in Maine.
