Excerpt from The Warlock's Curse by C.B. Oresky

I'm excited to share an excerpt from C.B. Oresky's creative and imaginative young-adult novel, THE WARLOCK'S CURSE. Enjoy!
Peek between the pages of The Warlock's Curse by C.B. Oresky...
The whales’ frenzied song grew even louder—the electrical atmosphere intensified.
“Now what’s happening? We’re dissolving!” Clara yelled, watching her little hands disappear and then reappear again.
Angelica observed different parts of the ship, their cats, their bodies, and the monkey crew all vanishing momentarily. She drew a sharp breath. She was about to say something when the ethereal whale swimming directly before them opened its massive mouth, saltwater pouring down its yawning maw that seemed miles and miles deep.
“This is madness!” Clara shrieked, staring down the vast gaping throat of the beast. “Even a hurricane would be much better than this.
We’re going to die, for sure!” Angelica lost her composure. “Turn the ship!” she demanded. “I don’t wanna die!”
“Impossible!” Claudius cried. “We must go!” “I’m gonna be sick!” Clara cried, her face pasty. She clasped her sister’s scrawny hand in horror. What lay before them was far worse than that scary roller coaster Angelica had once convinced her to try at their town fair.
Catapulted forward by the hurrying tide, Claudius’s ship now sailed upon the phantasm of a massive whale. The sleek vessel hung momentarily on the edge of the watery precipice of white light, then slipped straight down the monster’s wide-open chasm…
About the book

Twin Sisters on a perilous journey to remove an ancient curse…
Blurb:
Clara and Angelica Grace have never met ghosts. They’ve never sailed on a tall ship, ridden wild unicorns, or fought with magical weapons. Instead, the teenage twins have a wretched existence, ignored by their troubled parents in a rundown home and tormented by the town’s snobs.
Everything turns topsy-turvy all of a sudden when discovery of an ancestor’s hidden journal with an odd key to an unknown door leads them into an entirely different realm.
The girls go on a thrilling oceanic voyage to search for mysterious whales, train with a seasoned warrior, and are befriended by a wise Master. But all is not a bouquet of lovely lilies…they are hunted by a cunning warlock and must rid themselves of The Warlock’s Curse.

Peek between the pages...
The guy who wore tattered jeans and sported longish hair escorted me to dinner. Black locks curled at his ears. I wasn’t sure if Cal’s looks bothered Mom more than his east-coast attitude. His jerky movements had her squirming in her chair at the dinner table more than once.
Jason and Cal scarfed down the meal, while the rest of us picked at our food as if Mom served live earthworms covered in tomato sauce.
Dad forked his lasagna and pinched off a bite. “Tracie, you can’t impose on your friends.”
“Debby wants me to stay with her,” I said.
“And why is that? You cried on her shoulder, didn’t you? You’re spoiled. I didn’t have anything when I was your age.”
“I’m happier at her house,” I said, avoiding Dad’s stare and wishing I could say Grandpa didn’t cover you in bruises.
“Debby has her own family. Whatever little fairy tale you two invented will come to a halt when she has her baby. She won’t have time for you.”
Cal wiped his mouth with a napkin. “I’ve been thinking about this too. Why don’t you let Tracie move to Texas with me until she graduates? I live near her old high school.”
Dad’s eyes widened like a hoot owl. “Oh, that’s why you’re here. You think I’ll let my daughter move in with you? She’ll be a mother herself in a couple months—”
“No, Mr. Bigelow. No one wants to hop in bed.”
Dad pointed at me. “You’re moving home tomorrow. If you argue, I’ll have a chat with Debby’s husband. I’m sure he’s tired of you.”
“Mr. Bigelow, you’re missing the point—”
Dad pushed his plate away and stood. “Tracie, you will move home tomorrow. Cal, you should head home tonight. Tracie will be busy with us.” He left the table and vanished into the living room.
Mom followed him, abandoning her dinner.
Jason swallowed the last of his tea and set the glass down. “I’m done. Anyone up for video games?”
“In a little while,” I said, knowing my twisting gut stopped me from having fun tonight. I gathered the dishes. “I’m not hungry.”
Cal chewed his last bite of lasagna and carried his plate into the kitchen.
Mom returned and pulled me aside. “You need to say your goodbyes. Otherwise, you know what will happen. I’ll finish clearing the table.” I found Cal in the hallway.
“Hey, I need to talk to you. Where’s your room?” he asked.
“I’m not allowed to have boys in there. Dad will get mad.”
Both Jason’s video game and Dad’s television blasted from the living room.
“Not even for a minute? It’s getting dark outside.” Cal had a point. Everyone was occupied. After Dad’s speech, they didn’t think I’d break the rules.
We snuck into my room. With a soft click, I shut the door behind us. We took seats on the bed, since we had no chairs.
Cal ruffled his hair. “Are you moving back in here? Your dad is a maniac.”
“You heard him. I don’t have a choice. Debby will have her baby in a couple weeks, and I have nowhere to go.”
“You can live with me. My place is small, but we could make it work.”
I didn’t know him well. What if we didn’t get along after I went with him? Besides, Dad would call the law on us.
The door rattled, and my heart thumped when it flew open.
“You know boys aren’t allowed in here,” Dad said. “Dad, we’re just talking—”
“Shut your mouth, or I’ll shut it for you.” His posture stiffened.
We had to get out of here. Dad blocked the exit. Rather than challenging him, I stayed put. I could hear Cal breathing. He was no match for my father.
Dad glared at both of us. “Cal it’s time to say goodbye.” He stomped away.
I exhaled. It was safer with Cal here. Any other time, Dad would’ve stripped off his belt and whipped me. There was a five-minute window for Cal to leave before Dad threw him out and came after me next.
“He’s crazy. Come with me.” Cal sat on the bed’s edge, one leg dangling, ready to stand.
“I can’t.” I could only imagine the trouble I’d start if I left with this boy.
“You can. You’re stronger than you think. What do you think he’ll do when I leave?”

The witch removed her athame from her satchel, sliced open the meaty part of her palm, and coated the blade with her blood. She held it to the sky as she moved to stand beside the girl in the center of the circle. “As above,” she buried the ritual knife into the Earth beside Maya’s waist, “so below.”
She lifted her arms to the clear sky where the orange harvest moon held reign over the night, letting the power of the elements fill her. The tendrils of darkness hung in the air nearby, waiting for her to harness their energy. “Dark God. An act most foul, the murder of an innocent, has been committed upon this sacred land. Lend us your strength to right the wrong.”
The black candles on either side of Maya’s head burst into flame, melting the wax into two small nubs.
“Yes, my lord. Yes.” The witch smiled. “Dark Lord, lend Maya Pendleton your power. Resurrect her from the land of the dead, so she may bring vengeance upon Rand Roosevelt, the one who wronged her, to restore balance to this sacred land.”
A bolt of lightning forked down from the sky into Maya’s chest. The wound on the girl’s hand closed, and her eyes popped open.
The witch outstretched her palms over the girl, who was no longer human, but rather an immortal slave bound to the witch. “Arise, my avenging angel.”

I'm delighted to welcome Linnea to my blog.
Can you describe your dream home?
I did live in my dream home from which I moved to downsize last year. My previous home had an open floor plan with two master bedrooms on the main floor and an extra bedroom in the loft where my grandchildren could stay. The kitchen was open to the family room and eating area where the family could gather and chat while I cook. There was a separate dining room for larger family events and a separate office where I could write. There was an attached gazebo at the front and a porch at the back. I was an avid gardener with flowers, fruit trees, and vegetable gardens. I miss my prior home, but the upkeep of the yard became too much.
If we were to come to your house for a meal, what would you give us to eat?
Slowly baked pot roast with potatoes and carrots. This meal brings back memories of my mother’s Sunday meals.
Tell us about the absolute BEST fan letter you have received.
I’ve become acquainted with one fan who is has posted in-depth reviews on all of my books. Through social media and interactions with him, I’ve learned that he had lost his wife but is an avid reader. He graciously supports me on social media and leaves positive comments.
Say your publisher has offered to fly you anywhere in the world to do research on an upcoming book, where would you most likely want to go?
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, I had the opportunity to travel to the United Kingdom and France and where many of the scenes in Curse of Clansmen and Kings series takes place. However, I’ve never travelled to Italy where several scenes in Skull’s Vengeance takes place. I would love to go to Rome and visit the ancient ruins and countryside outside the city. And then, I would love to visit northern Italy and hike some of the trails.

Book Blast & Giveaway: Family Pride Blood Fever by Deborah A. Bailey

Book two of the Family Pride Paranormal Romance Series
After claiming Zora Mason as his mate, and fighting off a threat to the MacKinnon pride, Mac is more than ready to get back to managing his coffee bar and settling into mated bliss. But just when it looks like things are quieting down, Mac and Zora find more challenges ahead.
Plans for Zora and Mac’s official introduction to the pride, and the opening of the new coffee bar may be derailed when, gripped by a mysterious blood fever lingering after the leadership challenge, Mac is driven to the edge of his endurance as he fights to keep his inner lion under control.
Juggling her responsibilities in the business and her position as the mate of the pride leader becomes even more challenging when Zora is forced to confront her fear that Mac is changing into someone she doesn’t recognize.
As the fever pushes Mac to the edge, the revelation of an old, painful family secret proves to be the key to saving Mac’s life. Zora and Mac come up with a plan to end the threat of the fever forever, but that same plan may destroy them both.
Is their love strong enough to defeat the blood fever, so they can live happily ever after as mates?
Peek between the pages...
"After Mac fought Eldon it was like he'd gone into some kind of trance. He was in and out of consciousness for a couple of hours."
"I heard about that," Lena put her arm in Zora's and they started walking again. "So many things have happened at once. The challenge, his mating with you, the new shop--it's all coming down at once. Surviving a challenge alone would be enough."
"Lena, I can understand the challenge being stressful, but the mating? It wasn't like it was the first time we'd been intimate."
"There's more involved in the process than it might've seemed. Being at the waterfall where Stephen and Ellen were mated, where I was mated, and generations before me…surrounded by the pride members…it connected you both and made you part of our family," Lena explained. "It's part of a transition that we go through. As a human, you wouldn't have noticed it. But for him, it was a big step away from his life as a nomad."
"But if that's true, what about last night? If we are connected to each other, how could the blood fever make him act that way?"
"Blood fever makes the predator inside him stronger. Those impulses were always there, but my grandson channeled them into his work."
"So, what do I do?" Zora asked.
"Don't show fear. No matter what. Fear feeds the predator inside him. The more fear, the more control the blood fever will have over him. I know he doesn't want to admit this thing could overpower him. But if he tries to fight it, he will lose."
"Lena, do you think he could hurt me?" As she asked the ques-tion, a chill went through her, like she'd been dipped in ice water.
"No, my dear. Blood fever will not make him do anything that he wouldn't normally do. Not really," she replied, as she grasped Zora's hand.

My word for 2023...what's yours?

Do you choose a word each year? Are you able to stick to it?
Last year, my word was Inspired. Did I stick to it? I think so. At least, for the most part. But about two-thirds into the year, inspired turned to overwhelmed. So this year, I tossed around words like Fun, Adventure, and Possibility. See the theme? But I also want to continue working on the things that became overwhelming. This led me to make my word for 2023 Balance. I'll still work on new projects and promote my current titles. And I'll continue to spread the word about amazing authors and their books on my blog and bookstagram accounts. All while remembering to take time for myself, discover new places, and try new things.
This year will be all about Balance.
Will you be choosing a word? Not sure what word to choose? I got my inspiration from Bryn Donovan's Word of the Year Ideas for 2023.
Wishing you an amazing, magical 2023!
