A Voice from the Bottom of the World – Interview with Karen Peakes
(This post is the second in a series that I’ll be doing interviewing the people who helped me research and produce my latest novel, The Winter Over, a psychological suspense thriller set at the South Pole) When I was told Brilliance Audio was handling the audiobook narration for The Winter Over, I was thrilled: Brilliance ... Wil Wheaton vs. the Internet
WIL WHEATON: You deserve to get paid when you make something with your mind that other people will use to make money. INTERNET: No! We demand that you retract that statement because many of us have made a career of giving things away and getting Amazon Affiliate click-throughs on our free content blogs. WIL WHEATON: ... All Shall Be Bitten
I just returned from this year’s Bouchercon mystery conference, where the world’s alcoholics who also happen to write mysteries gather every year. In all seriousness, it’s an amazing event for both writers and readers and it’s already one of my favorite things to do as a writer (writing is not first). One of the most ... [Read more...]

The Give and Take of Conferences
When you participate in a conference, always keep in mind there’s a transaction being conducted, and I’m not talking about the amount listed on the REGISTRATION page. TRANSACTION – PART I Paying to attend a conference—as well as footing the bill for all expenses (travel, lodging, meals, and incidentals (read: bar tab) is the cost ... [Read more...]

Kindle Worlds and Why I Went There
I recently released my first Kindle Worlds novel, The B-Team, set in best-selling Barry Eisler’s world of the lethal half-Japanese, half-American assassin, John Rain. Several people are unfamiliar with KW and, once they hear what it is, follow it up with…why? WHAT IS KW? If you want a full explanation, the official Kindle Worlds site can ... [Read more...]

John Rain returns…
I’ve got a quick, but significant announcement: I’ve just published my newest release, The B-Team, a Kindle Worlds-commissioned novel set in Barry Eisler’s world of the lethal half-Japanese, half-American assassin, John Rain, available right now for just $3.99 on Amazon. This is a departure for me from the Marty Singer novels, but definitely a labor of love. ... [Read more...]

Why I Signed with Amazon
Recently, a reader took me to task for signing, selling, and publishing my Marty Singer series with Amazon’s mystery imprint Thomas & Mercer. They cited Amazon’s anti-competition practices—their stance, not mine—such as removing MacMillan titles from sale because Amazon wanted to sell books at “unsustainable prices” back in 2010. However you feel about Amazon and its ... [Read more...]
