Nog maar elf dagen en dan is het zover! Dan verschijnt mijn zevende boek, de SF-bundel 'Conquistador' met elf onderling samenhangende verhalen en een novelle. Mijn adrenalinespiegels zijn ondertussen alweer zo hoog dat ik er onrustig van slaap en de stijve nek waarmee ik vanochtend wakker werd zal ook niet toevallig zijn. Er moet in die laatste dagen nog heel wat gebeuren op promotiegebied, er zit een weekeinde Elfia aan te komen waar ik weer achter de kraam sta, en ondertussen is het op mijn betaalde baan ook vrij onrustig. Door de drukte van mijn schrijfcarriere kom ik er dan weer niet aan toe me daar bezorgd over te maken. Een geluk bij een ongeluk, zeg maar. Hoewel ik een dag met Netflix op de bank liggen uiteindelijk wel nodig zal hebben, is alle heisa natuurlijk helemaal de moeite waard. Want ten eerste is de bundel door het harde werk van de redacteur en het met een stofkam nog eens door de drukproef gaan heel erg verbeterd en ten tweede is de cover, van de hand van mijn goede vriend en illustrator Cornell Göksu, heel erg mooi geworden. Het is een boek dat ik op zou pakken als ik het in een kraam of in de winkel zou zien liggen, en dat is de bedoeling natuurlijk. En ten slotte wordt het boek gepresenteerd op een wel heel bijzondere dag, namelijk een groot opgezette boeklancering en schrijfevenement op 6 mei in Hoorn. Er zijn inspirerende sprekers, een boekenmarkt en andere erg toffe programma-onderdelen en natuurlijk ben ik er om je boek te signeren. Je kunt kaarten bestellen voor de hele dag of alleen voor de lancering. Nu ligt Hoorn voor heel veel mensen niet naast de deur. Maar misschien wil je wel een gesigneerd exemplaar van 'Conquistador'. Dat kan! Ik ga namelijk op het schrijfevenement van 6 mei ook van te voren bestelde boeken signeren. Bestel nu je boek via de webshop van uitgeverij Godijn Publishing en je krijgt direct na 6 mei een door mij gesigneerd boek thuisgestuurd! Wil je het boek lezen, of wil je na lezing van het boek je mening aan anderen laten weten? 'Conquistador' staat ondertussen ook al op zowel Goodreads als op Hebban.

Dat ik nu zoveel aandacht besteed aan 'Conquistador', wil niet zeggen dat ik mijn vorige boek vergeten ben. 'De Krakenvorst, boek 1: Keruga' is nu alweer meer dan vier maanden uit! En er blijven nog steeds mooie recensies binnenkomen. Zo stond er een mooie recensie van Remco Meisner in het laatste nummer van Fantastische Vertellingen - je kunt die lezen op mijn site onder het tabblad 'recensies'. En ik weet van een paar recensenten dat ze nog een stuk gaan schrijven over mijn boek. Er zijn ook twee wedstrijden gehouden waarbij lezers een gesigneerd exemplaar van mijn boek konden winnen. Daar was ook heel veel belangstelling voor, wat leuk was om te merken! Verder heb ik een exemplaar van mijn boek voorzien van kanttekeningen, over mijn bedoeling met sommige beschrijvingen, de achtergronden en inspiratie. Dat unieke boek heb ik toegestuurd naar Adinda Volkers, een van de vijf 'ambassadeurs' van 'De Krakenvorst, boek 1: Keruga'. Ik had namelijk beloofd om onder hen een 'special edition' van mijn boek te verloten! Verder was het heel leuk om met het boek op de 'Comic con' in Rotterdam te staan! Heb je het boek nog niet? Je kunt bij mij een gesigneerd exemplaar bestellen - die stuur ik graag naar je toe. Of je kunt gebruik maken van de webshop van mijn uitgever Macc, of van Bol. En ik vind het natuurlijk leuk als je na het lezen ervan een reactie plaatst op Goodreads, Hebban of Bol.
De meeste lezers van het boek vinden het spannend, vooral tegen het einde, en willen heel graag weten hoe het verhaal verdergaat. Gelukkig is het tweede boek al af en ligt bij de uitgever. Maarten, die ook van het tweede boek de coverafbeelding gaat maken, heeft het al gelezen en schreef me dat hij het zelfs een beter boek vond dan het eerste deel en dat hij het een eer vindt er weer een tekening bij te mogen maken! Ik kijk ernaar uit te zien waar hij mee gaat komen. Afgelopen weekeinde was ik bij mijn uitgever in Rijen voor een trainingsdag, zodat ik op boekenbeurzen en comic cons nog meer lezers zal kunnen interesseren voor mijn boek. Hij vertelde me dat 'De Krakenvorst, boek 2: Kartaalmon' zal verschijnen op Christmascon, in het weekeinde van 16 en 17 december 2017. Dat duurt dus niet zo lang meer!

Ik noemde zojuist al het nieuwste tijdschrift van Fantastische Vertellingen (nr 41) vanwege de recensie van mijn boek die erin stond. Maar het was bijna een 'Johan Klein Haneveld-speciaalnummer' want er stonden ook nog twee cartoons in, gewijd aan De Krakenvorst, en mijn korte verhaal 'De stoet', dat volgens een lezer toe werkte naar een beklemmend einde. Verder bevatte dit nummer twee boekrecensies van mijn hand. Het losse nummer is te bestellen op de site van Fantastische Vertellingen. Je kunt ook een abonnement nemen voor vier of acht nummers, voor een wel heel gunstige prijs, want elk nummer is bijna 100 pagina's vol leesplezier! Ik zal ook in de volgende editie weer twee boekbesprekingen plaatsen en mijn korte verhaal 'Het plotselinge woud' staat op de planning voor nr 42! Warm aanbevolen!
Van de zomer komt ook weer de jaarbundel Ganymedes uit, waarvoor ik een kort verhaal en twee gedichten heb opgezonden. Altijd spannend of ik weer geselecteerd zal worden. Dezelfde uitgever produceert tevens een leuke bundel 'Tenenkrommende vertellingen' (nou ja, leuk ... ;-) ). Mijn verhaal 'De gangen' is daarvoor geselecteerd.
Maar dat zijn niet de enige bundels waar verhalen van mij in zullen komen te staan. Ik kreeg via collega-auteur Mike Jansen de tip dat er een bundel werd samengesteld met verhalen in de geest van Jack Vance (een erg bekende SF-schrijver, die in Nederland erg populair was). Toevallig had ik een verhaal liggen dat er wel een beetje bij aansloot en dat heb ik opgestuurd naar de samenstellers, ook al was de deadline eigenlijk verstreken. Maar mijn verhaal 'Het bezoek van de tovenaar' viel in goede aarde en wordt opgenomen. Daar ben ik heel erg trots op! Ook omdat de bundel verhalen zal bevatten van Gerben Hellinga Jr. - een van de weinige Nederlandse SF-schrijvers van wie ik op de middelbare school afwist en wiens Coriolis-boeken ik werkelijk verslond!
Toen zag ik ook nog eens een oproep van mijn uitgever Godijn Publishing voorbijkomen voor het schrijfproject '28x Blauwe Violen'. Het thema was: wat is werkelijkheid, wat is illusie? En ik had een verhaal, getiteld 'Droomboot', dat hier goed bij paste. En Elly Godijn was er ook blij mee. Het verhaal is geaccepteerd voor deze verhalenbundel die waarschijnlijk uitkomt in het voorjaar van 2018.
Afgelopen weekend bij uitgeverij Macc kregen we niet alleen een training in verkooptechnieken, maar werden ook plannen gesmeed voor een verzamelbundel met verhalen van de auteurs van uitgeverij Macc. Deze bundel zou mensen kennis kunnen laten maken met de diverse schrijvers en op festivals meegegeven kunnen worden als mensen een boek kopen. Ik was natuurlijk als schrijver van korte verhalen meteen enthousiast en heb mijn verhaal 'Symbiose' opgestuurd. Ik weet niet precies wanneer deze bundel zou uitkomen, maar ik denk dat het ook 2018 zal worden.
De website Historische Verhalen heeft twee van mijn verhalen geaccepteerd: 'De pastoor en de leviathan' en 'Poliepen', deze zullen later in het jaar verschijnen en in 2018 zullen ze terechtkomen in de verzamelbundel van Historische Verhalen, samen met 'De dodo en de domineeszoon'. Daar kijk ik erg naar uit!
Vorige maand verscheen op de website Fantasize ook weer een kort verhaal van mijn hand, namelijk het post-apocalyptische verhaal 'Lobbes'. Je kunt het zo online lezen! SF Terra heeft twee verhalen van mij liggen, in het volgende nummer van The Flying Dutch komt een verhaal van me, en ik heb ook een aantal verhalen opgestuurd om mee te dingen naar de 'Edge.Zero'-award, een prachtig initiatief dat vorige jaar een toffe verhalenbundel opleverde.
Ik heb bovendien een account aangemaakt op online platform Sweek. Als het goed is, is er ook een app van. Hier kun je verhalen lezen van diverse schrijvers, ook zonder je aan te melden of in te loggen (maar als je mensen wilt volgen of verhalen wilt beoordelen of liken moet je wel een account hebben). Ik ga Sweek gebruiken om voorproefjes te plaatsen van mijn boeken, maar ook om een aantal verhalen te plaatsen. Om te beginnen wat verhalen 'uit de oude doos', verhalen die ik oorspronkelijk schreef in mijn laatste jaar van de middelbare school, en die ik later rond 2000 nog bewerkte of herschreef. Ik zou ze nu misschien niet meer zo schrijven en ze bevatten wat cliches, maar ik vind ze toch nog steeds erg leuk en fantasievol, en dit is een mooie plek om ze ook bij lezers te krijgen. Op dit moment staan er op Sweek twee verhalen van mij, met covers die ik zelf heb getekend, namelijk 'Verraden' (een ruimteschip met panne rond een rode reus), en 'Neergestort' (bijzondere biologie op de donkere zijde van een planeet).

Er is dus heel wat gebeurd de afgelopen twee maanden, maar ik heb nog niet eens alles verteld. Ik heb namelijk ook een boek geschreven! Vorige keer suggereerde ik al dat ik iets zou doen met mijn filmbesprekingen, nadat Daniël de Wolf (zelf bekend van onder andere 'De torrie van Mattie') er opnieuw op had aangedrongen. Hij suggereerde dat er mensen zouden zijn die zo'n boek graag zouden lezen en dus ging ik aan de slag. Ik heb dertig essays van mijn blog geselecteerd, op volgorde gezet, ingekort en geredigeerd. Dat was een hele klus. Vervolgens heeft Daniël voor mij een enthousiast voorwoord geschreven. Een stukje daarvan lees je al op mijn blog onder het tabblad 'Non-fictie'. Ik heb 'Betrapt op de waarheid' -zo gaat het boek heten- ondertussen ook naar een uitgever opgestuurd. Ik ben heel benieuwd wat die ervan vindt.
En daar blijft het niet bij. Ik heb namelijk al de indicatie gekregen van Godijn Publishing dat ik ze mijn bundel 'De inspectie - en andere verhalen uit het Millennium' mag opsturen voor een Boek 10-project in 2018. Onder de voorwaarde dat ik de Young Adult-trilogie waar ik ideeën voor heb ook aan hen aanbiedt. Nu timmeren ze hard aan de weg op YA-gebied dus daar hoefde ik geen twee keer over na te denken. Eerst wil ik echter nog een SF-roman gaan schrijven. De drukte rond het verschijnen van 'Conquistador' heeft gezorgd dat ik daar nog niet aan ben begonnen, maar het kriebelt al wel, en ik denk dat Theo van Uitgeverij Macc, als liefhebber van Arthur C. Clarke, wel eens heel blij zou kunnen zijn met mijn manuscript!

Genoeg bezigheden dus, maar dit was nog niet alles! Nee, ondertussen verschenen er ook weer twee gastblogs van mijn hand op de blog van Tazzy Jeninga, 'Ik hou van horror, fantasy en spanning'. In die van maart, 'Nog meer boeiende boeken', schrijf ik over 'Werelden onder de horizon' van Jack Lance, en boeken van Allan Steele, Alastair Reynolds, Alistair MacLean en ja, George MacDonald! In de gastblog van april, 'Nieuwe en oude klassiekers', komen boeken voorbij van onder andere China Miéville, Ray Bradbury en Walter M. Miller jr.
Kortom, het waren drukke maanden. Geen wonder dat ik er een stijve nek van heb gekregen! Daarom binnenkort maar weer eens een dagje bingewatchen op Netflix ... En over twee maanden schrijf ik weer een update over mijn schrijfactiviteiten. Dan hopelijk al met de eerste recensies van mijn bundel 'Conquistador'!

Het is dat ik de laatste anderhalve week met griep op bed heb gelegen, anders zou dit blogbericht nog positiever zijn uitgevallen. Het is een hardnekkig virus. Vanochtend voelde ik me gelukkig al weer een stuk beter en hopelijk gaat het me morgen lukken weer naar kantoor te gaan, dus het wordt geen gejeremieer. Verre van! Wat ik op het gebied van mijn schrijfcarrière te melden heb is namelijk louter positief.
Zijn er nog maar twee maanden verstreken sinds het verschijnen van mijn boek 'De Krakenvorst, boek 1: Keruga'? Het voelt een eeuwigheid, zoveel gebeurde er in die acht weken! Ten eerste heb ik het verschijnen van mijn boek gevierd op kantoor. Mijn collega Liesbeth maakte voor die gelegenheid heerlijke cupcakes, die ook nog eens helemaal passend bij het thema versierd waren! Ik ben haar er nog steeds dankbaar voor. Daarna heb ik een aantal boeken verstuurd naar geïnteresseerde bloggers en recensenten. En sindsdien zijn er al meerdere recensies verschenen op sites als Hebban, Goodreads et cetera. Ook in de laatste editie van het tijdschrift SF Terra stond een bespreking. De meeste lezers bleken positief, al kan ik natuurlijk niet iedereen tevredenstellen. De een vindt het spannend, de ander niet spannend genoeg. De een vindt Tarid wel sympathiek, de ander niet. En ga zo maar door. En een aantal mensen wijzen op de afbrekingsfouten in het boek. Als eindredacteur van een tijdschrift vind ik die natuurlijk ook storend. Volgens de uitgever lag het aan het opmaakprogramma, en we gaan zorgen dat het in boek 2 op dit gebied beter gaat. Maar de positieve toon overheerst!
Om mijn boek te promoten heb ik op vrijdag 13 januari een signeersessie gehouden bij boekwinkel Stevens in Hoofddorp. Het was die avond erg slecht weer, dus een paar mensen die hadden beloofd te komen, bleven weg. Ondanks de wat lage opkomst vond ik het echter wel heel gezellig. Een paar weken later stond ik op het terrein van het TV-programma Utopia in de kraam van mijn uitgever. Het was die dag koud en regenachtig, maar gelukkig was er warme koffie en thee. We verkochten twee boeken in totaal - niet veel, maar ik was er trots op! Ik ben op de radio geweest op Omroep Brabant, en ben over mijn boek geïnterviewd op de website Qreative Minds.
Uitgeverij Macc staat overigens ook op de Huishoudbeurs in de RAI in Amsterdam en aanstaande zaterdag schuif ik aan om mijn boek te signeren. Mocht je toevallig in de buurt zijn, kom gerust langs! Het weekeinde daarna sta ik in Ahoi in Rotterdam op mijn eerste Comiccon. Hou je van superheldenfilms, stripverhalen, sci-fi series of fantasyboeken - kom langs en vergaap je aan kostuums en stands. En haal een gesigneerd boek bij mij! Eind maart is in Utrecht de Dutch Commiccon. Daar sta ik niet met de uitgever, maar ik ben er wel. Al was het alleen maar omdat er de uitreiking plaatsvindt van een verhalenwedstrijd waaraan ik heb meegedaan!
Dat is een mooi bruggetje naar een ander wapenfeit! Zaterdag 11 februari werd de winnaar bekendgemaakt van de verhalenwedstrijd van het Valentijn-genootschap. De winnaar was ik niet, maar ik behaalde de derde plaats met mijn verhaal 'De man van mijn dromen'. Mijn bos bloemen heb ik niet kunnen meenemen, aangezien ik er niet bij was. Ik ben echter wel heel trots dat ik deze plek behaalde. Met een SF-verhaal nota bene! Er komt mogelijk een bundel met de beste verhalen van de wedstrijd en dan kunnen jullie mijn verhaal daarin lezen.
De twintig beste verhalen uit de wedstrijd 'De mens van 2050' kwamen in januari beschikbaar in een online verhalenbundel. Wie schetst mijn verbazing toen bleek dat allebei mijn inzendingen tot de beste twintig behoorden? De enige schrijver met meer dan één verhaal in deze bundel. Leuk dat een oud-collega van het Pharmaceutisch Weekblad, Heleen Croonen, ook een verhaal in deze collectie had staan. Vorig jaar was ik getipt om een verhaal te schrijven voor de website Historische Verhalen. In januari verscheen hier mijn verhaal 'De dodo en de domineeszoon'. Ik vond het zo leuk dat ik prompt nog twee historische verhalen heb geschreven en opgestuurd. Die worden mogelijk later dit jaar geplaatst. En volgend jaar komt er (net als dit jaar) een verhalenbundel uit met de gepubliceerde historische verhalen. Daarin kunnen jullie tegen die tijd ook mijn verhalen vinden! Ik heb afgelopen week de drukproeven geredigeerd van het volgende nummer van Fantastische Vertellingen - daarin komt mijn verhaal 'De stoet' te staan, samen met twee recensies van mijn hand. Je kunt alvast een abonnement nemen! Verder ga ik meewerken aan het nieuwe online platform Sweek. Hier kun je gratis verhalen lezen van allerlei auteurs, en dus binnenkort ook van mij. Als ik wat hersteld ben ga ik me inschrijven en mijn eerste verhalen plaatsen.
Mijn boek 'De Krakenvorst, boek 1: Keruga' was trouwens opgestuurd om mee te dingen naar de Harland prijs voor beste fantastische roman. Maar mijn boek behoorde niet tot de genomineerden. Volgend jaar beter. Ik ding ook mee naar de Harland Award, Fantastels, en Trek Sagae. En ik ga verhalen opsturen voor de nieuwe editie van Edge.Zero. Het worden dus spannende maanden.
Wie benieuwd is naar mijn korte verhalen kan er trouwens vanaf 6 mei twaalf lezen in mijn bundel 'Conquistador'. In januari heb ik samen met de negen andere deelnemers aan het Boek10-project van Godijn Publishing mijn contract ondertekend. Het was een gezellige en inspirerende dag. Het was leuk om mijn collega-schrijvers te ontmoeten. Sindsdien heb ik het manuscript nog een keer aandachtig doorgenomen en het ligt nu bij de eindredacteur. Dan komt begin maart nog een ronde redigeren en dan is het klaar voor publicatie! Het boek wordt gepresenteerd op een fantastisch festival voor elke boekenliefhebber - en het zou leuk zijn als je erbij aanwezig bent.
Zoals je ziet: er is veel gebeurd! En het wordt de komende tijd nog druk. Zo ben ik door mijn goede vriend Daniël de Wolf overgehaald om toch een boek samen te stellen van mijn filmbesprekingen. Hij had er weer een van mij gelezen die hem tot nadenken stemde, en suggereerde dat anderen ze ook interessant zouden kunnen vinden. Dus de komende tijd zal ik me daarover gaan buigen. Daarna ga ik snel beginnen aan de SF-roman waar ik het al een tijdje over heb. Dat heeft echter niet bijzonder veel haast, aangezien eerst nog het tweede deel van 'De Krakenvorst' gaat uitkomen (het manuscript ligt al bij de uitgever) en ik nog een tweede verhalenbundel heb klaarliggen en een dichtbundel. Verder komt er van uitgeverij Fantastische Vertellingen een bundel uit met 'tenenkrommende verhalen' en hoop ik weer in Ganymedes terecht te komen met een verhaal. En ik hoop dat de griep snel helemaal weg is, want ik heb om al deze dingen te kunnen ondernemen wel wat meer energie nodig dan ik nu tot mijn beschikking heb ...

Last weekend was pretty special! Mijn book ‘De Krakenvorst, boek 1: Keruga’ was presented to the public at the Castlefest winter edition, a great fantasy fair. My publisher gave me my copy of the book, and I was in the stand the whole weekend to sell and sign my book. caught up with other authors, which was great, and found out new things about myself (e.g. that I can talk with interested customers and point them at my book! I’m not that much of a socially handicapped recluse I always believed myself to be). My parents and Bianca were present on saturday, and that evening we celebrated the publication of my book by opening a bottle of Champagne. I was very happy! Now the hard work begins to get my book in the hands of readers. This week I will be busy sending out signed copies to people. (If you by any chance want a signed copy of my book: order it with me and I will gladly send you one!). A couple of copies will go to bloggers and writers who have promised to write a honest review of my novel. I am very excited to learn what other people think of my book! That’s always an exciting phase in the publication process - I like what I wrote, or I wouldn't send it out to be published. But do other people as well? Anyway, it was great to hold my own copy of the book in my hands - the words from my head finally transferred to paper. With a great cover by Maarten de Bruin, who also worked in the stand drawing caricatures of people. He did mine as well!
Oh, there will be another book presentation and book signing early next year. On friday the 13th of Januari in the evening I will be with my publisher at book shop Stevens in Hoofddorp. I hope I will see some of you there to catch up! The months after that there will be events as well, with the other authors of Macc, and I’m looking forward to those as well!

In the mean time I have been working on my short story collection ‘Conquistador’. The news has been made public last week: my book will be published in the Boek10-project of publisher Godijn publishing in Hoorn. In this project ten authors will present their ten books, in one big event (may 6th in Hoorn, write it down, hold the date, you are all invited to come!). The books will have a similar look as part of the series, but on the inside they couldn’t be more different: from contemporary literature, young adult and short stories, to fantasy and thrillers. The publishers thought my manuscript was very intriguing and accepted it for the project. It is a dream come true, as I love writing short stories very much and always dreamed of having a collection published! ‘Conquistador’ will contain eleven interconnected short stories and a novella, that follow the changing face of humanity far into the future, when the stars have died and even black holes have evaporated. Always the question remains what it is to be human, when even in the form of machines or complex group intelligences basic human nature shines through. I believe these stories contain my best writing, and the novella Conquistador has the best action scene I have ever written! Cornell, my best friend, is going to design the cover! He is a gifted artist and has made covers for the Dutch popular science magazine KIJK.
The rest of the year I will be at comic-cons and fantasy festivals with both books! Elfia, Castlefest, the Dutch Comic-Con, Imagicon … I want to be everywhere my books are!
The second book of the De Krakenvorst-duology is already finished, and my publisher has said he wants to publish it next year. So I have some rounds of rewrites and editing to look forward to and then another book presentation at the end of 2017. And I’m thinking about getting a second short story collection out in 2018 as well - if ‘Conquistador’ is well received.

On the short story front a lot is happening. My story ‘De laatste draak’ was published at fantasywebsite Fantasize. A great site to follow, and I will publish some more stories there. My story ‘De sprong’ was published in the last edition of SF Terra. Sadly my name was left out, but the editors promised to rectify that in the next edition, when my story ‘Planeet van Monsters’ will appear. The editors also asked me to send in another story, and I will gladly oblige! If you like SF and fantasy stories, reviews of books and movies and interviews with artists, SF terra is a fun magazine and I heartily recommend it to you. Also I recommend Fantastische Vertellingen. The editor Remco Meisner told me two stories of mine are slated to appear: ‘De Stoet’ in the march-edition and ‘Het plotselinge woud’ in the june-edition. Also my short story ‘Sensory deprivation’ will be published in the next edition of Tjonge - the smallest magazine in Europe! The Dutch Star Trek club The Flying Dutch has accepted my story ‘In elkaars ogen’ for publication in 2017! So, a lot to look forward to! I have sent in stories to new competitions as well. I’m participating in a Valentine-competition (fun!), I have sent in a story for a competition for genre stories of 1000 words maximum (I wrote 999 words in total), and I’m going to participate in the Trek Sagae-competition with several stories. It’s going to be an exciting time in april/may of next year, when the winners of a lot of these competitions will be made public … And my publisher has also entered my book to compete in the Harland Award for best genre novel - so there’s even more excitement coming my way!
I like being able to publish longer novels as well as short stories. I love writing both (maybe I like writing short stories even better), and I think getting short stories out there is a great way for people to meet my work, and maybe build some interest in my novels!

It all means that being an SF- and fantasy-author is now my main job. I have to realise that I’m basically running two jobs. One where I make money (being an editor of the Dutch Veterinary Journal) and one that is my life long passion and childhood dream come true. With book signings and fantasy fairs, short story competetions and rewrites of manuscripts, and the plan of starting to write a long hard SF-novel, there’s not much time left for friends and family. I guess they will have to meet me at the events where I’m at. The rest of my spare time I want to relax with my wife, take care of my aquariums, and catch up on all the movies I don’t want to miss. This situation will likely continue a couple of years. Think of it as me doing a college course besides my job - I have a chance of being an author now, but I will have to invest in it! I’m not letting this chance pass me by. Things will calm down eventually, I believe, but for the next couple of years I will not really be available any more. Still, if you come by at a fantasy fair, comic con or book signing, I will gladly catch up!

Usually I don't look forward to winter that much, being diagnosed with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Though I like the cold, I love the sound of snow crunching under my boots, and the wintery light over the fields, the dark gets to me every year. My day light lamp helps, and this year I have something special to look forward to too! In December the first book in my fantasy duology 'De Krakenvorst', 'Boek 1: Keruga' is slated to appear. I finished the rewrites, finetuning the manuscript. The publisher has checked my corrections. He told me after four chapters he thought it to be tense and exciting, 'het leest als een trein' (flowing like a train). That's a great compliment! It's now being looked at by a corrector for the last spelling mistakes. In the mean time the artist is busy at designing the cover and I will get to see that very soon! Also: my publisher is organizing a book release party at a book shop, where I will sign my book! The first one ever in my career as an author. So I'm very excited for that as well! I think this will be early december, and I will also introduce the book at the Castlefest Winter edition December the 10th and 11th.

In the mean time I'm thinking about my next large project. Some weeks ago I decided to drop my non-fiction project. I had made a start on it, collected material, quotes, trying to edit, but it was a lacklustre effort, and I had to confront the fact that I wasn't very motivated to write another non fiction book. The fire for that has gone, I guess. I've said what I wanted to say, and I am more excited by the prospect of writing fiction more! The idea's I have for a proper hard SF novel are growing nicely, and I am getting a sense of where the story will head. I even have a title for it: 'De afvallige ster' (the prodigal star), and I hope to start writing that novel before the end of the year. I have already stopped writing short stories for the near future to clear up space in my time and imagination, but I will probably still write some in between larger projects.

On the short story front there is news too! First: I've sent in three stories to compete in the Fantastels-competition! Last year I reached third place with a story, so I'm curious as to where my tales will end up now! I also found a Valentines Day story competition and I even have a story that I can send in for that one. Sadly I didn't reach the final selection in the 'De mens van 2050'-competition. But well, I can't win them all, I guess. Better luck next time. I sent in two short stories for the SF-magazine SF Terra. I didn't receive a reply, but it turned out they thought they already answered me. They were very happy with the stories and 'Planeet van monsters' en 'De sprong' will be published soon! I also sent in a story, 'In elkaars ogen', for the magazine of the Dutch Star Trek Society 'The Flying Dutch'. In 2015 they published my story 'Valstrik'. They were happy with this new tale and it will appear in their publication in 2017. I became a member of the club as well, as I love Star Trek! Finally, I sent in my story 'Thuisreis' to the publishers of Ganymedes 17 as a candidate for inclusion. I'm still waiting to hear what they think of it, but the official selection will only take place in june of next year. In the mean time I'm going to send in a story for Tjonge and another one for Fantastische Vertellingen, where my story 'Het plotselinge woud' is still slated to appear soon. Then in december there's the Trek Sagae-award, and I hope to compete with four very different stories. I haven't heard back from Moord & Mysterie, but I sent in a story for them as well earlier this year. And if all that is not enough, last weekend I sent out a collection of connected stories, titled 'Conquistador', to a publisher for a very interesting project. It would mean a lot to me if they would accept the collection for their project, so fingers crossed! Publication would be summer 2017, so with a bit of luck there will be two books by my hand for you to read next year.
Not much new poetry on my blog these last months. I'm focusing on story writing now, but rest assured, I am still looking for ways to get a collection of poetry out there as well.

A lot can happen in two months! For example: I celebrated my 40th birthday the 29th of July. It's not making me anxious - I feel my creative life is only going to become more productive and bear more fruit instead of less. And the ideas for more stories keep on coming. Also: on the day of my birthday I was on vacation in Oxford with my good friend Cornell. We had talked for years about visiting this city, especially because two authors we both love lived and taught there. I'm talking about C.S. Lewis en J.R.R. Tolkien, who together with Charles Willams and others formed The Inklings, a group that met in Lewis' rooms, and in a pub, The Eagle and Child. Well, on my birthday we visited Magdalen College, where Lewis taught, and ended the day in The Eagle and Child, where I had an ale in The Rabbit Room, at the spot Lewis and Tolkien sat and talked about their books. I don't think it can get better than that! I came back to home and to Bianca inspired.
Shortly after I came home the post brought me Ganymedes 16! A collection of dutch fantastic literature, by great authors. My story 'Tot de laatste man' was included. I read the book and its very good! I am very proud to be published in it. The 10th of september the book will be officially presented in Amsterdam, and you are of course invited to be there!
More good news is the publication of my story 'Gebeurtenishorizon' in the september edition of SF-journal Fantastische Vertellingen. I'm looking forward to seeing that story in print as well. You can order single editions of the journal, so if you want to read my story (and many other good stories) order the september edition. My story 'Het plotselinge woud' that I sent in for Ganymedes, is also slated to appear in a future edition of Fantastische Vertellingen (I think it will be the december edition?).
I sent in a story -'De Gangen'- to Remco Meisner, who asked for 'horrible stories' for a collection he is going to publish. My story fitted the description and will be included! I'm proud of that! News on this collection will follow!
Last week I sent in two stories for the Harland Award, the most important short story competition for the fantastic genre in the Netherlands. I have good hopes for both of these stories. Sadly I have to wait till april to hear the results. In the mean time there are more competitions coming up, such as Fantastels and Trek Sagae, but also 'Moord & Mysterie' - I recently finished a story that would fit in there well!
So far this year I have written twenty short stories (and a lot of poems). For most of these I have not found a destination yet. It remains my dream to once publish one or more collections so you can read these stories as well! This doesn't mean that there's nothing to read for you out there. Before this year is over, the first part of my fantasyduology 'De Krakenvorst. Boek 1: Keruga' will be published by Macc. Theo Barkel, the publisher, organized a dinner for all the authors last weekend, and Bianca and I attended. He told me first that he found my book to be very tense and he found it hard to stop reading (which is a massive compliment). And he will finish editing the book later this week, and next week I can start on the rewrites. I will give that priority the coming month and hopefully finish in time to make publication in december a reality. It would be fun to be able to present the book at the winter edition of Castlefest! 'De Krakenvorst. Boek 2: Kartaalmon' is scheduled to appear in 2017.
I also know what larger fiction projects I want to tackle next. I have a great idea for a longer hard SF novel, in which I want to combine 'mind blowing' idea's like intelligent dyson spheres, group consciousnesses and extraterrestial life with emotional storylines about bullying and dealing with abusive parents. Another idea I have is for a Young Adult SF-trilogy. I wrote a very short story (1200 words) for a competition, but thinking about it I found the world interesting and large enough to play around in some more, and a plot is starting to come together. Maybe I will write this one first, to create a reading public for my more high concept SF-novel later on.
But first I still want to finish my next non-fiction book on a sacramental look at life. I have brought together all I have written on this on my blog, and some more notes I had collected. I have to edit this, cut a lot and shape it into a coherent whole. I still feel like I have to get this subject out there, but I am more enthusiastic about my new story ideas. I think I will have more 'creative mind space' after the editing work on 'De Krakenvorst' is done. I feel a bit miffed that this is taking more time than I thought a year ago, but well, I have no strict deadline. If I can manage to finish it next year I will be proud of myself!

It's been a while since I have shared news with you about my writing activities. But what happened this weekend I do have to share with you. Last saturday saw the Dutch 'Theology Night', and part of the ceremonies was the awards ceremony for best theological book. And guess what? 'Woestijnvaders' (Desert fathers), the book I contributed to last year, was chosen for best theological book of 2015! I'm proud of that of course and I hope more people will read the book now. It's worth reading.
I wasn't present at the awards ceremony, but well ... the past months were not easy. I can share that much. It was an emotional roller coaster and then some. Writing did have a low priority for a couple of months, as I was glad of surviving every new day. But now it's getting better again. My energy is building up again and my creative juices start streaming. I was a bit anxious about not writing for some months, afraid I had lost my mojo, but it turned out not to be that dramatic. I just had to sit down at the coffee place, open up my lap top, and start to write, and in no time I finished the story I had begun working on in late march. After that I wrote some more stories, e.g. two stories for a SF-competition about 'Mankind in 2050'. The stories had to be between 600 and 1200 words long, I managed to turn them in at 1199 words both. But I think they turned out pretty well. Beyond that I sent in my story 'Gebeurtenishorizon' (Event horizon) to the publication 'Fantastische Vertelling'. The editors were enthousiastic and accepted the story for publication in the september edition.
Early april saw the awards ceremony of the Paul Harland Award at the fest of the fantastic novel. I had gotten my suit out of the moth balls and attended the ceremony, but sadly both my stories finished outside the top 70. Whether it is because they were 'hard SF', or because they were on the short side? I don't know. I'll just participate with two stories again next year, and maybe end up closer to the top 3! I also participated in the 'Fantastels'-competition, another competition for SF- and fantasy stories. My story 'De droom' (The Dream) ended up at the third place! That was a relief, after the disappointment of the Paul Harland Award. I was very happy with what the jury wrote, e.g. that my style reminded them of Arthur C. Clarke. That is a compliment to be proud of!
I'm still waiting for the results of the latest Trek Sagae award, but I can tell you the news that my story 'Tot de laatste man' (Up to the last man) is accepted for publication in Ganymedes-16, a yearly collection of Dutch fantastic stories. I had a story published in Ganymedes-15, and was very proud of that achievenment, and now to be published in the new edition too is a great honor for me!
Also I know the first part of fantasy duology 'De Krakenvorst' (The Kraken King) will appear later this year. My publisher is very enthousiastic about the manuscript. He is reviewing it now, and then I will receive it back to do some rewrites and editing. I think it will be an even better book after doing some more work on it. On the Elfia fantasy fair in april I saw work of the cover artist that will be asked to paint the cover and was impressed by his work! It will be a beautiful cover. The second book of the duology will appear in 2017.
Possibly also appearing in 2017: my new non fiction project. I'm busy collecting and editing my blogs of a couple years back about the sacramental world view and sculpt them into a manuscript. The prospective title: 'Het stiekeme koninkrijk' (The sneaky kingdom). I'm working on it slowly, as my energy has to be shared between the different projects. I do have to say i twill probably be my last non-fiction work for the time being, as I also have some great ideas for a SF-novel. And I want to publish some of my poetry as well. I hope to be able to tell more about that later this year.

I have been glorying in the publication of 'De loser die wint ...' these past few weeks. The high point for me was the opportunity to sign my book at the christian book store in Delft. A couple of friends and my parents came by to get their books signed, the shop keepers provided good snacks (carrot cake with cream and falafel) and coffee! And I was grinning the whole time. I don't think the smile has left my face yet, to be honest.
Also, the first reviews of my book were very good. There were a couple of reactions on facebook and on blogs, of thoughtful interaction with the text, and people saying that the book brought up a desire for positive things, an acceptance of living in the story God is already telling, and openness to the reality of his presence working. One reviewer praised the focus on weakness in my book, as a powerful antidote to prosperity gospel, which is an anti-gospel if you ask me. God became weak in our weakness, so that we will be resurrected from our weakness as He was resurrected. This reviewer took some issue with some of my claims in the book with regards to the church or the ultimate fate of people, but I think those are worth talking about with a glass of wine and see if we do not have more in common than divides us. I worked on this book with Reinier Sonneveld, with whom I participated on several other projects in the past. He is a very insightful and also patient editor, helping me to strive to excellence. Yesterday evening we came together in Utrecht to drink some beers together, but more importantly, to talk about my next project! A book I have talked a lot about already, but which now is ready to be written. It's about the sacramental (or pariticpatory) way of looking at our reality: seeing the invisible God become visible in our world, contrasted with a transactional view that sees our lives in terms of transactions, and nature as something to act upon. Reinier had some great idea's and input and challenged me to set myself some goals for improvement in my work. I will try to do that, but will probably not lose my somewhat meandering, expansive style. I have taken a week off from the office the first week of March, and I will use that time to get a start on the project. Then I hope to work on the book probably until summer, finishing at the end of june/early august with the first draft.
It could take some more time, though, as there's another book that's going to be published this year. My fantasy novel 'De Krakenvorst'. My publisher is still very enthusiastic but he's busy with some other projects before mine can get his full attention, so it will take some time before the first book of the duology will see the light of day. When the editor has looked at the manuscript I will have to do some rewrites, and those could interfere with the manuscript about a sacramental worldview. A small price to pay for the opportunity to work on so many cool projects!
I'm still writing short stories these months. I am now on my fourth short story of the year. And I will be looking for venues to publish them or participate in competitions. I learned last week about a competition organized by Luitingh Sijthoff where the winner will be announced at the Elfia fantasy fair and today I hope to send in my story. Fingers crossed! I also recently took subscriptions to two magazines: SF Terra and Fantastische Vertellingen and I hope to submit stories to them as well! I like to stretch myself and my writing abilities with every short story that I write. I'm also slowly starting to think about a new fiction project. I think it will be a hard SF novel. I don't know what it will be about yet, but my unconscious is of course hard at work to provide a meaty, juicy idea. I hope it doesn't work too hard at it, because this year and the year after that I will probably not have time to write the story. But the first inspiration is there, and it will come to fruition in due time.
I'm also still writing poetry on my blog and I hope to be able to write more film reviews this year. Both of which I hope to turn into books as well, farther down the road. In the mean time I will go on enjoying the fact that 'De loser die wint ...' got published and is now in the hands of the readers! It's heady stuff, being an author, harder than it looks, but I wouldn't want anything else!

Last wednesday was another memorable moment. I had received word from the publisher that my book was due to arrive. When I got home (a bit later than usual due to an interview that took a little more time than I had planned on), I found a box waiting for me on our dinner table. And Bianca, my wife, waiting anxiously. She was as curious as me, but had managed to curb her enthousiasm just a little bit. I took the time to take off my coat and my shoes (which took a lot of will power) and then took the scissors and ripped open the tape. The box contained my books! Wow! It's been a couple of years since I wrote the first version. And in the mean time another book of mine ('De Derde Macht') was published as well, but that did not diminish this experience. E-books will never lead to a comparable rush. To hold your own book in your own hands! Of course we celebrated, with a Dutch treat (oliebollen), and a bubbling Prosecco. And I leafed through my book and read some parts. It is a great book, I think, and I'm very proud of it!
Of course, as a Goodreads Author, I made a page on Goodreads for my book. So, if you find the time to read it, it's possible to leave a review! And if you leave a review, other people will be encouraged to pick up the book as well!
The coming weeks I will try and do my best to inform people about my book. There have been books sent out to people to write about it, and I will publish another bit on my blog, to whet people's appetites.
In the mean time I just finished writing my 34th short story of this year. I think I will find time to write one more before the year is over. I sent out two stories to participate in the new edition of the Trek Sagae-competition. Participating in that last year was a lot of fun, so I'm curious to see if I can repeat my success. I also sent two stories to the publishers of the Ganymedes series of short story collections. I hope they will choose one (or both! one can hope) for the next edition: Ganymedes 16 - which will appear next year. It would be a great honour to be part of the next edition. Coming up in januari there is another competition: the Fantasy Strijd Brugge, for stories up to 1500 words. I wrote a story of 1499 words last februari, and I can't wait to send it in. Participating in these competitions is one of the ways in which I hope to bring attention to my fantasy novel 'De Krakenvorst' which will appear in 2016! Again, something to look forward to!
Finally: at last it is official. I'm going to reduce my time at the office and start working for 24 hours each week in stead of 32 from januari the 1st. I hope the extra day off will create some time to edit my next book, write the new non-fiction book I have planned, prepare a collection of poems, and write new short stories! The well of my inspiration hasn't fallen dry yet ...

In a couple of hours I will travel by train to the city of Arnhem, for the official releaseparty of the book 'Woestijnvaders'. I'm part of the team that produced this book, of which I am very proud. It is a book about some illustrous figures from early church history, monks en nuns traveling into the desert and starting the monastic tradtion. Not because they wanted to start anything at all, but because they wanted to grow in their relationship with God, with themselves as human beings, and with fellow humans and creation around them. This will probably be the least conventional book ever published about the desert fathers, seeing how it's made up to look like a magazine and illustrated with art, quotes and maps. There's even a small brewery that will make a series of beers featuring the desert fathers and mothers. I look forward to tasting the beer named for 'Moses the dark' tonight. There will be interviews in national newspapers about this book, so keep a look out for that!

This is only the first event that's coming. My own non-fiction book is nearing completion as well! The last few weeks I have been busy with the last editorial checks, adding some minor nuances to the book. Also I've seen some cover designs, and the title of the book has changed. It will now appear as: 'De loser die wint ... als God je verhaal vertelt' (The loser who wins ... when God tells your story). A better title, that conveys the message well! I hope to see the final proofs soon. I once thought the end of october would see the publication, but I think it will be november. I'm also trying to organize a book signing event at the christian book store in Delft in the end of November, for me to celebrate it's publication. I'm also looking forward to hear what readers thought of the book. It will not be everybody's cup of tea, but I found myself being enthousiastic about it when editing the proofs, so I hope others will have the same response to the book! Then there's my fantasy duology 'De Krakenvorst', that's picked up by Macc, a small Dutch publisher specialising in fantasy and SF. First another couple of books have to be finished, but then my book is scheduled. There will have to be some rewerites, but I look forward to diving in the world of Tarid, Alecia and Frelik and their struggles with the cult of the Almighty and the mysterious Kraken king. My information is added to the publishers' web site, so it is official! I hope I will be able to present the book at the annual Castlefest festival in august 2016! Last week I sent out a SF-story to participate in the Fantastels-competition. A competition for original Dutch and Flemish fantasy and Sf-stories. This is the third competition I have entered, and I think it's exciting to see how my work compares with others'. Next month I'll also enther the Trek Sagae-competition for the second time, and participate in a Flemish competition as well. I'll also send out my contribution for the next Ganymedes-collection, as I have already chosen which story to send in. Just last week I finished writing another SF story, my 28th this year! I don't think I've ever written that many short stories beforen, even when I was a teenager. I find my inspiration continues to thrive, as every time I think I will not be able to come up with more, it provides me with another idea. So I just follow the muse ... I still hope to publish some collections of my short fiction in the future, and I hope entering (and maybe ending up at a high spot in) competitions will help me achieve that!

At the office work is in progress to make it possible for me to work less hours, and have more time available for my writing career. I hope I can go back to a three day work week starting december. I have a lot of ideas that I will start to work on as soon as I have a bit more time! E.g. a collection of my own poetry, that I want to publish by a PoD-service somewhere next year!

I have watched a lot of surfing movies, and from that I learned that when a wave comes your way, you have to catch it and let it carry you along, where it will take you. Mind, I will not climb on a board myself very soon, but it's good advice for regular life too. In my life as an author it seems I have catched the biggest wave of my life so far ...

First I received the collection Ganymedes 15 with my story 'Laatste Klus' in it. The official launch will be September 19th. I thought the level of the stories in it was very professional, and I think to get an overview of the state of Dutch SF and fantasy it's a very good and professional book. Recommendend.

Then I had news from my editor at Buijten & Schipperheijn, that my book 'Hoe je zwakheid leven brengt' ('How your weakness brings life') will be available in October this year! This means that in september I will be busy with the last corrections of the manuscript. I look forward to holding the book in my hands, but even more to get it out there to the readers, share my story with them, and hear from them how they see this story play out in their lives. Expect to hear me talk about this a lot more ...

Also October will see the publication of 'Woestijnvaders', a book about the desert fathers. The chapters are all written by Mattias, and Edited by me, but there's a lot to be done still by the very talented artists and designers, who will make this a book that is not only inspiring to read, but also to look at. Who would have thought a book about third and fourth century monks could be that way? I've heard there will be an event to celebrate the publication and lots of attention in the media.

In the last blog I wrote about my plans to take the manuscript of my fantasyduology 'De Krakenvorst' to a publisher at Castlefest (a fantasy fair). I handed over the first chapters to Theo Barkel from Macc, and he read those directly, in the first week even, and asked for the complete manuscripts. He asked me to came by and it turned out he liked the stories and wants to publish them. Once I sign the contract I'll start on re-writing the two books a bit with the editor. We haven't talked about publication dates yet, but I think the first book 'Keruga', will appear in 2016. I'm very enthusiastic about this, as you probably can imagine! I'm very proud of these works and I look forward to selling and signing them at fantasy fairs and activities, together with the other authors from Macc.

To gain a bit of name recognition on the SF and fantasyworld I'm entering writing competitions. Today I sent in two stories for the Harland Awards, the most important SF- and fantasyaward in the Dutch language. I will hear how my stories performed in april 2016, so I have some months left to feel nervous ... In the mean time I will start prepping stories for Fantastels, Brugge and Trek Sagae, more competitions, and for the next edition of Ganymedes!

Last, but not least: my editor at Buijten & Schipperheijn also asked me about any new idea's and I told him I hope to write a book about viewing the world through a sacramental lens as a christians and how this gives me freedom to be myself, care for the world and love God without feeling burnt out by the 'transactional' view our world fosters on us. The editor was very enthusiastic about this idea, and encouraged me to write about it! He also had some very good advice and sent me to do some study before I start writing, so that is what I will do this winter! I hope I will be able to finish the manuscript for this book early 2016!

As you can see, with all the editing, re-writing, and writing new books there's a lot of work coming my way, which is why I have applied at the office to reduce my work week, and go back to three days at the office. The CEO was enthusiastic about the opportunities I have now, and it is hoped I will have more time to write from november 2015 on!
