I was born in the Summer of 1969 in Dagenham, just on the border of East London. School was largely unproductive so his early adult years were spent putting up stalls at Romford Market, working in a record shop, gardening and road sweeping.

After resigning from an insurance company to play in a band, I found myself unemployed for two years in the early nineties. In 1997, I qualified as a psychiatric nurse.

I am the author of the following novels:

Tollesbury Time Forever (2012)
The Bird That Nobody Sees (2012)
I Woke Up This Morning (2013)
The Buddhas of Borneo (2013)
The Magical Tragical Life of Edward Jarvis Huggins (2014)
Elysian Wonderland (2015)
Merzougaville, Baby (2015)
Albion Calling (2016)
Bolivian Rhapsody (2018)
This Awful Small Mercy of Miss

I've had all sorts of warnings and disciplinaries in my 20 years but am able justify every single instance by doing what was best for the patient even at the expense of the organisation, my paygrade and my post at the time. It was my entire disatisfaction with the mental health system (and a specific event that happened on October 11th 1998) that led me to write The Frugality Trilogy. It's been a wild old ride!

Hi Flo!

I have met many incredible people during my years as a psychiatric nurse and have to say that Simon is completely of my own devising. There are many elements in the story though that very much reflect my experiences - particularly the Mental Health Review Tribunal. I have to say also that the scene where the nurse doesn't give Simon his injection - that is true to. On that occasion, in real life, I was that nurse. Thank you so much for reading it though! Very kind of you!(less)

“A sigh can hold back a tear, but not forever.”
Stuart Ayris, Tollesbury Time Forever

“There was talk in the fields about the witch in the woods, but go see her? No one would dare. So I thought to myself I’d sneak out one night to see what I could find there.   I slipped from my straw, jumped over the gate, a candle alight in my hand. I went to the woods at the edge of the park as the moon fell down on this land.   I walked through the trees, so scared and alone, though with hope in the back of my mind. As I saw a small light and smoke rising high I wondered what I would find.   I walked up to a door but before I could knock, it opened with a creak and a squeak. There stood a woman all dressed in white; I felt completely unable to speak.   I sat on a chair by the side of a fire whilst she looked fondly at me. ‘Are you a witch?’ I asked her at last. And she said ‘I may possibly be.   But don’t be afraid I just prefer it out here Away from experienced minds. I live with my innocent, simple, sweet thoughts That are pure and gentle and kind.’   I was a little confused So I said to her now, ‘How do you even survive?’ She said to me softly ‘Just love, my young man, It is only on love that I thrive.’   ‘What can I do?’ I said to her now ‘So I can be just like you?’ ‘What, wearing a dress? Clad only in white? I’m sure you’d look better in blue!’   ‘No,’ I said, laughing, ‘To feel just like you Where everything seems so right.’ She thought for a while, And closed her deep eyes As the full moon shed its fair light.   ‘All I can say Is open your mind, The world is more than you know. Look deeper than deep, Be a dreamer, my boy, And give love wherever you go.   When others hurt you, Accept that it hurts, Have faith in the bad and the good. Walk with the soul And the eyes of a child You will always be safe in these woods.   As for the world That lies there outside, Remember the words that I’ve said. Keep them inside Your heart and your mind And by them may you be led.   Soon others will see There is no such thing As being too nice or too kind. And then one fine day, When more are like you, I can leave this sweet glory behind.’   So when I got home I thought of the woman That had entered my life that dark night. I will walk tall forever With the eyes of a child, To the blackness of life I’ll bring light.”
Stuart Ayris, Tollesbury Time Forever

“Beauty is as beauty is. It is no more complicated than that. The moment you try to understand some things is the moment you break the spell.”
Stuart Ayris, Tollesbury Time Forever

Hello!!!

Very kind of you to say so! They're a little mad but I like them. But nowhere near as mad as Ulysses - which I absolutely love!!!! Reading it feels like any literary chains I once had (which weren't many!) have finally gone! Free at last!!

Sarah I see you're reading Ulysses! Can't wait to read your review of it... I'm "reading"/listening to the audiobook of Finnegan's Wake [also by Joyce].

I just found out about your novels and have heard nothing but complementary reviews. I can't wait to give the Frugality series a read!

Lanye Hello Mr. Ayris,
I finished your book Tollesbury Time Forever last night. And I just thought you would like to know that I was completely blown away by it. I could not put it down. I became lost in the village of Tollesbury through the eyes of Simon. You have such a way with words. I am so glad that I have discovered you as an author.
