U.S. news:

Ukraine, US sign additional agreements for minerals deal, Economy Ministry says
Ukraine and the U.S. signed two additional agreements on May 13 to formally launch a joint Reconstruction Investment Fund as part of the deal for Ukraine's mineral resources, Ukraine's Economy Ministry said on May 13 during a briefing.
The move follows Ukraine's ratification of the minerals agreement earlier this week, as well as Zelensky's signing of the ratified deal. Ukraine's parliament also on May 13 approved in the first reading changes to the budget code necessary for the fund to operate in Ukraine.
The documents concerning the establishment and operation of the fund were signed between Ukraine's Public-Private Partnerships Agency and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), a key agency of the U.S. government for foreign investment.
The Reconstruction Investment Fund will be jointly managed by Kyiv and Washington under an equal partnership model. Both sides have declined to publicly disclose operational specifics.

The Economist wrote an editorial entitled The war in Gaza must end. Let’s talk about that some.
Poland says Russia recruited arsonists for Warsaw fire on social media

President Trump’s conversation with President Ahmed al-Shara, who once led a branch of Al Qaeda, was the first time in 25 years that the leaders of the United States and Syria had met.
Let me end by sharing some spiritual encouragement for you all out there.
As you know, if you want true peace, I believe you should look to God and the Bible for that — not a country, not a party, and certainly not a person. I believe that not only can God give you ever-lasting life, but that He can also give you peace in this life. God is like a good shepherd. He leads you by the still waters. He restores your soul. He guides you out of the death and destruction of sin. If you know nothing about the Bible, but want to test the waters and maybe try it out, check out my resource page here.
By the way, if you’re dealing with depression, PTSD, or thoughts of suicide, I have a link I’d like you to check out. In fact, it’s an entire page long. A pep talk, if you will, that I believe will help. I also have listed a hotline that you can call, whether you’re a service member or just a civilian. Here’s the page: PTSD.

The 5-8-25 edition of The View from the Front podcast.

Timestamp: (1:28). I know there’s a lot going on politically, and it remains a time of great division and fear. Let’s address some of the concerns out there and hopefully lift your spirits.
Timestamp: (9:52). Is the bombing campaign against the Houthis in Yemen over? Possibly for now. But let’s examine the costs and the likelihood that it’s actually over.
Timestamp: (23:50). Who’s the bigger threat to America? Russia? Or China? For a long time, I said the latter, same as everyone else. But I read an article this week that shook me about this.
Timestamp: (43:36). The Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has survived yet another week, but how strong is his support in the military?
Timestamp: (51:40). Rapid round: Steve Witkof needs to get his act together; India and Pakistan are on the brink of war; President Trump has ordered U.S. intelligence to start spying on Greenland; and finally, there are prelimary talks that the United States might send troops into Gaza to help adminsiter a post-war situation.
Timestamp: (1:00:29). Let me end by sharing some spiritual encouragement.

U.S. news:
A look at the cost of the operations against the Houthis.
First, news broke last week that the Navy lost a $60 to $70 million aircraft.
Here’s how it happened, according to Military.com.
The USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier lost an F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter jet and a tow tractor when both fell overboard on Monday, the Navy said in a statement.
This incident marks the second Super Hornet that the Truman has lost while deployed to the Red Sea, and it is the third major mishap that has occurred aboard the aircraft carrier in the last several months.
"The F/A-18E was actively under tow in the hangar bay when the move crew lost control of the aircraft," the statement said, adding the "sailors towing the aircraft took immediate action to move clear of the aircraft before it fell overboard."
A U.S. official confirmed to Military.com that initial reports indicated the Truman made a hard turn to evade Houthi fire, which contributed to the fighter jet falling overboard.
The Institute for the Study of War claimed that the Houthis “used a complex strike package combining ballistic and cruise missiles and drones to force the USS Harry S. Truman to take evasive action.”
It seems that was a pretty sophisticated attempt by the Houthis.
Back to the cost of this to date, besides losing the fighter jet mentioned above, the Houthis continue to knock out MQ-9 Reaper drones. They’ve now downed seven of them in the past month and a half.

While this is approximately $300 million in losses between the jet and the drones, it hasn’t been the only cost, as we lost another plane this week.
Some articles put the total cost of the attacks against the Houthis as over a billion dollars, when add in the cost of the munitions, missiles, and bombs that we used.

Is China or Russia the bigger threat to the United States? There’s a clear answer.
In other news this weekend, Ukraine made history. (They had previously shot down helicopters, but never a jet.)
In Hegseth news, it appears the troops aren’t buying the act as well as he’d like. A great story below on it, if you have a moment.
India and Pakistan
Across military Reddit forums and enlisted meme pages, Hegseth has become a regular target of satire, often referred to with nicknames such as and "Kegseth." The references allude to past controversies, including alleged alcohol abuse and an incident in which he shared sensitive Yemen attack plan details in an unsecured Signal group chat that included a journalist.
…
Military.com spoke with more than a dozen service members ranging from noncommissioned officers to a general. They were all given anonymity out of concerns over retaliation.
The jabs at and mocking of Hegseth, while not unprecedented for senior military officials, appear unusually persistent and pervasive. Other high-ranking leaders have been the butt of jokes and the target of online irreverence -- such as Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Weimer, the Army's top enlisted leader who was mocked online for his perceived preoccupation with grooming standards -- but those moments have tended to fade quickly.
In Hegseth's case, satire has become part of the daily discourse.
In a recent Reddit post on the Marine Corps forum that featured the reports of Hegseth setting up a makeup studio in the Pentagon, “wouldn’t this fall under gender-affirming care?”
The Indian government said its forces had struck nine sites in Pakistan
While India in recent years has struck Pakistan-administered Kashmir and areas close to it during periods of rising tensions, the attack on Wednesday included strikes on Punjab, in mainland Pakistan, for the first time in more than half a century.
A couple of things from this week’s Insider Brief for The View from the Front podcast, edition 5-5-25
First, this is huge for Ukraine if this hasn’t been halted yet by the Trump Administration.
From the story:
Ukraine is getting more help in its war with Russia.
A Patriot air-defense system that was based in Israel will be sent to Ukraine after it is refurbished, four current and former U.S. officials said in recent days, and Western allies are discussing the logistics of Germany or Greece giving another one.
The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the discussions, declined to describe President Trump’s view of the decision to transfer more Patriot systems to Ukraine.
The White House’s National Security Council does not provide details on the strength and placement of defense systems, said James Hewitt, a spokesman for the council. “President Trump has been clear: he wants the war in Ukraine to end and the killing to stop,” he said.
A former White House official said that the Biden administration had secured the agreement with Israel in September, before the election won by Mr. Trump. The Defense Department said in a statement that “it continues to provide equipment to Ukraine from previously authorized” packages, referring to weaponry pulled from existing inventories and new purchases.
In other weapons news, did you all see this?
Let me end by sharing some spiritual encouragement for you all out there.
As you know, if you want true peace, I believe you should look to God and the Bible for that — not a country, not a party, and certainly not a person. I believe that not only can God give you ever-lasting life, but that He can also give you peace in this life. God is like a good shepherd. He leads you by the still waters. He restores your soul. A pep talk, if you will, that I believe will help. I also have listed a hotline that you can call, whether you’re a service member or just a civilian. Here’s the page: PTSD.
I also wanted to share some words from Pastor Rich Bitterman (link below):
John tells us that Jesus is also the Baptizer with the Spirit.
He does not merely pardon — He transforms.
He does not merely wipe the slate clean — He breathes new life into the dust of dead souls.
Eyes that once saw nothing but self now see the splendor of God.
Ears once deaf to mercy now hear the music of grace.
Hearts once stone now beat with the pulse of eternity.
…
Today, Christ stands among us still.
He comes not with crowns or armies.
He comes in preaching.
He comes in Scripture.
He comes in the whispered tug at your heart even now.
You may brush past Him in the crowd.
You may hear the words but close your ears.
You may sit so close to eternity that the hem of His robe could brush your knee — and still turn away.
Or —
You may behold the Lamb.
And live.
Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
Look — while there is still time.

Timestamp: (3:32). A quick reminder on why I do this show each week. And why I talk about foreign policy as the primary subject.
Timestamp: (14:31). Trump hits the 100-day mark, and The Economist paints a dark picture of the Administration’s opening act.
Timestamp: (25:05). As a country, we fumbled the ball on handling China. And now they have the upper hand, and they’re going to seriously embarrass us.
Timestamp: (40:06). The Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has survived another week, and he’s perhaps in the clear for now.
Timestamp: (43:33). Canada selects a new leader, who is defiant in the face of Trump’s claims to making Canada a 51st state. Polls show most Americans are defiant on this issue, as well.
Timestamp: (49:39). Conservatives are growing tired of President Trump’s weakness toward Ukraine, and has a mineral deal been signed between the United States and Ukraine?
Timestamp: (55:56). Ukrainian air power is starting to take a real toll on the Russians… Let’s talk about it.
Timestamp: (1:00:29). Let me end by sharing some spiritual encouragement.

U.S. news:
Trump is a revolutionary. Will he succeed? from The Economist.
Eventually, bad polls will impinge on elected officials. America is a federal system that is too big and has too many rival centers of power to become Hungary (whose population is about the same as New Jersey’s). Congress, too, could become a problem for Mr Trump. Republicans have a thin majority in the House and were able to pass a budget framework only because a couple of Democratic representatives had died. Betting markets give Democrats more than an 80% chance of winning back the House next year. Control would enable the Democrats to frustrate Mr Trump, even if he continued to govern by executive order. In the Senate, Republicans are seven votes short of the 60 needed to avoid a filibuster. Those constraints are real.
The last source of resistance is the courts. The law moves slowly, but the Supreme Court has already handed down a 9-0 ruling in the case of a man wrongly deported to El Salvador. As with other institutions, the courts have less to fear from the defiance of an unpopular president. The administration may yet lose cases on tariffs, on the president’s ability to fire officials and close agencies without congressional backing, and on Mr Trump’s scattergun use of break-glass emergency provisos such as the Alien Enemies Act. If that happens, his theory of executive power will be discredited.
Even on the most optimistic reading of the MAGA revolution, Mr Trump has already done lasting harm to America’s institutions, alliances and moral standing. And if he is thwarted by investors, voters or the courts, he is liable to lash out against institutions with even greater ferocity. Using the newly politicised Department of Justice, he may persecute his opponents and stir up the fear and conflict that give him licence to operate. Abroad, he could cause alliance-wrecking provocations in, say, Greenland or Panama. There is no going back to the way America was 100 days ago. Only 1,361 days left.
China, Japan, South Korea will jointly respond to US tariffs

Let me end by sharing some spiritual encouragement for you all out there.

I thought for this edition of the Insider Brief, we’d dig in a bit on the situation in Yemen.
The operations against the Houthis continue to rise in cost for the United States.
First, news broke yesterday that the Navy lost a $60 to $70 million aircraft.
Here’s how it happened, according to Military.com.
The USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier lost an F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter jet and a tow tractor when both fell overboard on Monday, the Navy said in a statement.

Timestamp: (3:22). President Trump is pushing a peace deal that completely favors Russia, while also hinting that he’s nearly done trying to bring about peace.

It would make perfect sense for Trump to force Rubio to be the messenger on this inability to create a peace deal.
Here’s a quick reminder that this won’t be the first time. This is what Trump said during the State of the Union this year.
The Atlantic: Trump’s Plan to Sell Out Ukraine to RussiaThere’s been a lot happen since last Thursday’s podcast.
Here’s a quick rundown on the stories you need to know about, and which I’m tracking for this week’s edition.
The biggest news is Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth shared detailed military plans in a second Signal chat that included his wife and brother.

As CNN reports:
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared detailed plans about a military operation against the Houthis in Yemen on a second Signal group chat, this one on his personal phone and including his wife, lawyer and brother, three people familiar with the chat told CNN.
The chat was set up during Hegseth’s tumultuous confirmation hearing process as a way for his closest allies to strategize, two of the people familiar with the matter said. But Hegseth continued using the chat, which had more than a dozen people in it, to communicate after he was confirmed, the people said.
The revelation comes as some of Hegseth’s closest advisers have begun sounding the alarm about the secretary’s judgment, including his former press secretary, John Ullyot, and three former senior officials Hegseth fired last week — his top adviser Dan Caldwell, deputy chief of staff Darin Selnick, and Colin Carroll, who served as chief of staff to the deputy secretary of defense.
This impossible-to-imagine news has Hegseth on the hot seat. (Or possibly his time is already finished, according to NPR.)
Even before this terrible news broke, Hegseth was having former advisers and strong supporters of President Trump speak out publicly against him.
Check out what John Ullyot wrote in Politico. Ullyot is a former chief Pentagon spokesman and led communications at the National Security Council and the Department of Veterans Affairs in President Donald Trump’s first term.
Besides that, he was a senior communications adviser on Trump’s 2016 campaign.
But last week, Ullyot resigned from the Pentagon and wrote these blistering words in Politico:
The latest flashpoint (for Hegseth) is a near collapse inside the Pentagon’s top ranks. On Friday, Hegseth fired three of his most loyal senior staffers — senior adviser Dan Caldwell, deputy chief of staff Darin Selnick and Colin Carroll, chief of staff to the deputy secretary of Defense. In the aftermath, Defense Department officials working for Hegseth tried to smear the aides anonymously to reporters, claiming they were fired for leaking sensitive information as part of an investigation ordered earlier this month.
Yet none of this is true. While the department said that it would conduct polygraph tests as part of the probe, not one of the three has been given a lie detector test. In fact, at least one of them has told former colleagues that investigators advised him he was about to be cleared officially of any wrongdoing. Unfortunately, Hegseth’s team has developed a habit of spreading flat-out, easily debunked falsehoods anonymously about their colleagues on their way out the door.
On Friday, POLITICO reported that Hegseth’s chief of staff, Joe Kasper, was leaving his role. Kasper had requested the investigation into the Pentagon leaks, which reportedly included military operational plans for the Panama Canal and a pause in the collection of intelligence for Ukraine.
It definitely looks like Hegseth is on his final legs with the Trump Administration, but he still sounds confident:
President Trump also claims — at least for now — that Hegseth is safe and doing a great job.
See here:
While it’s difficult to make a bold prediction, I would think that Hegseth is in trouble.
Hegseth even has the first (or probably many) Congressional Republicans coming out against him.
But the White House pushback is pretty strong.
And you could also argue a couple of things.
First, Trump doesn’t need the distraction with everything going on from Iran talks to strikes against the Houthis.
Secondly, the NPR story only has one source. But I balance out the single source with the fact that I put NPR pretty high on my list of media outlets that I trust. So, I’m skeptical they’d have written such a story without a strong source — especially given how Trump and the GOP are trying to defund them.)
What do you guys think?

I also have a podcast that focuses solely on faith called The Search for God. You can find it below.

Is the American Age over? And has the United States committed imperial suicide?

Timestamp: (2:24). Is the American Age over? And has the United States commited imperial suicide? Let’s talk about it.
Timestamp: (20:22). Moving along, could America bomb Iran in the coming days? The pressure is building, as are the number of U.S. forces in the region.
Timestamp: (23:59). Back to our continent, why is it we need Greenland again? One of our top commanders says we already have what we need.
Timestamp: (30:54). Bigger isn’t always better? The Secretary of Defense is looking at plans to cut the Army by 90,000. Let’s discuss this news and why.
Timestamp: (33:09). Who needs peace? Russia is now saying that a peace deal with Ukraine may not happen in 2025 at all. Or if it does, it will be late fall.
Timestamp: (37:22). The strikes against the Houthis in Yemen are proving quite expensive. Guess how many $30 million Reaper drones we’ve lost?
Timestamp: (42:23). In other news, Estonia makes a bold move against ships that are threatening undersea cables.
Timestamp: (45:36). Finally, China is making some bigger threats against Taiwan, and the United States is shifting more focus toward the area.

All of us need to examine our souls... What are we doing?

Timestamp: (1:07). A recap of the past week's political news, from election results to tariffs, and what that means for the country. I also make a bold prediction about Trump being at the apex of his power. Do you agree or disagree with the argument I’ve laid out?
Timestamp: (23:31). Why is such a large build up of U.S. military forces happening in the Middle East? I lay out three possible theories/opponents.
Timestamp: (31:15). The latest on the negotiations with Russia over the war in Ukraine.
Timestamp: (35:06). What is Pete Hegseth doing?!
Timestamp: (43:18). Greenland and Canada… Both are still on the acquisition list of Trump. And as Americans, we need to examine our souls… I’m not even kidding. This stuff is getting out of control.

In other big news, Senator Cory Booker made history with the longest Senate floor speech in protest of Trump agenda. It lasted more than 25 hours.
I listened to several parts of it, and it was actually quite good. Here’s a few examples:
Moving along, I mentioned last week that some on the Right aren’t happy with the attacks on due process.
Those folks are increasingly speaking out.
