US announces $2.5 billion in new Ukraine aid

The United States Monday announced nearly $2.5 billion in new aid for Ukraine as part of a surge of assistance in the waning days of the Biden administration.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement the aid includes air defense munitions, counter-drone munitions, ammunition for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, anti-tank weapons and artillery munitions.

U.S. President Joe Biden said the aid “will provide Ukraine with both an immediate influx of capabilities that it continues to use to great effect on the battlefield and longer-term supplies of air defense, artillery, and other critical weapons systems.”

Hi everyone! Thank you for being here.

This week, I have a special edition of the show. I interview Christian Ray Flores about his perspective in regard to why so many Russians actually support Vladimir Putin, and why Russia is fighting so hard — sending so many of its men to fight (and die) in Ukraine.

Honest to goodness, for the first time, it makes sense to me.

Flores lived in Russia for twenty years, and he knows the country well and has many friends still there. (Some who even still serve in legislative bodies.)

Flores also knows a lot about loving America.

He has witnessed a military coup in Chile, a civil war in Mozambique, and the fall of the USSR while he lived there.

In fact, all of this led to him writing a book called the “Little Book of Big Reasons to Love America: A Love Letter from an Immigrant.”

I think you’ll learn a lot about Russia and why we shouldn’t take America for granted by the time you end the show.

How will Donald Trump handle the war in Ukraine? from The Economist.

“Trump won’t be played for a sucker,” argues Matthew Kroenig of the Atlantic Council, a think-tank in Washington, who recently co-wrote an article for The Economist with Michael Waltz, whom Mr Trump has chosen as his national security adviser. “He will walk away from a bad deal.” Mr Trump, insiders say, fears a failure in Ukraine would dent his popularity, just as the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 hurt President Joe Biden.

Mr Waltz has acknowledged that America may need leverage to extract better terms from Mr Putin. He has suggested that America expand gas exports, crack down on Russian oil sales, provide more weapons to Ukraine and ease restrictions on their use if Mr Putin does not come to the table. Kurt Volker, who served as a special envoy to Ukraine during Mr Trump’s first term, suggests Mr Trump’s approach might initially be simple: a demand to “stop the war” without conditions.

Others in MAGA-land are also thinking about how a deal might be enforced. Keith Kellogg, a retired general whom Mr Trump this week picked as special envoy to Russia and Ukraine, and Fred Fleitz, a CIA veteran at a pro-Trump think-tank, have proposed that America “continue to arm Ukraine…to ensure Russia will make no further advances and will not attack again after a ceasefire”. Ukraine would not be asked to cede territory and America and its allies would lift sanctions and normalize ties only if Russia were to sign a settlement “acceptable to Ukraine”. If Mr Trump were to embrace these proposals, Ukrainians would be delighted.

Let’s end the show with a quick Bible lesson.

The Bible clearly says to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, and I can say that I’ve done so before returning to the faith. I’ve studied Hinduism and Islam, and even became a Zen Buddhist — or what they call Chan Buddhism in China — for a good five years or so.

And I know if you study these religions yourself, I think you will find them lacking and that they will leave you desiring more.

But go ahead and study then if you wish, it will only get you to the true solution faster. Now, as a reminder, I did launch a new podcast that focuses solely on faith. You can find it below.

As a final scripture reminder, do not grow weary in doing good. Even if you’re just helping one hungry kid or donating one school backpack, that might not solve world hunger or fix everything in our country (or your neighborhood), but you are doing good.
