WIP Wednesday - Kiera's Riding Habit

In Mortal Arts Kiera wears a particularly fetching riding habit that is based on a real riding habit currently housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In real life, this gorgeous ensemble is a deep brown, but for Kiera I decided to change the color to crimson. And I was thrilled when the Art Department at Berkley decided to use a version of this riding habit for the cover art for the book. Though, once again the color was changed, this time to a rich blue since Kiera's gown on t...

MANor Candy Monday - Mompesson House

This week's MANor Candy Monday is Mompesson House in Salisbury, Wiltshire, UK. It's a gorgeous National Trust property in The Close with a fantastic view of Salisbury Cathedral - an impressive sight in its own right. My husband and I loved everything about Salisbury, and can't wait to visit there again someday.

Favorites Friday - Airports

This may seem like a strange topic to cover for Favorites Friday, but I simply feel the need to brag on my local airport.  I've traveled quite a bit, though by no means as extensively as some, and the airport here in Fort Wayne is by far my favorite to fly out of and return to.  I've heard some argue that it's cheaper to fly out of Indianapolis or Detroit or Chicago, and perhaps it is, but, in my experience, usually by less than $100.  And by the time...

WIP Wednesday - Quotes

I like to start of my novels with a quote that will either set the tone of the book or foreshadows the events to come. For example, in The Anatomist's Wife I opened the story with the following Scottish proverb:
Be sure to live your life, because you are a long time dead.
How's that for a succinct truth. I've become rather fond of Scottish proverbs, and intend to use more in the future. Like,
The day has eyes, the night has ears.
Or
The devil's boots don't creak.
 However, for Mortal ...

MANor Candy Monday - Arundel Castle

This week's MANor Candy is Arundel Castle, the centerpiece of the village of Arundel in West Sussex, UK. Unfortunately, we did not have time to tour it during our trip to the UK in 2010, but we did see it from a distance, and it's absolutely magnificent. I would love to return and actually view the inside and the grounds....

National Pigtails Day

Thanks to the genius of my friend Samantha, some other ladies and I have decided to make today National Pigtails Day. It's unofficial, but fun, nonetheless. The world can always use a little more joy, and hopefully we'll bring a smile to someone's face. Please feel free to join us, and share your pics with me on Facebook or Twitter. I would love to see them.

In keeping with the fun and silliness of the day, I'm also thinking...

WIP Wednesday - A Playlist for Kiera and Gage

As a writer, I spend a lot of time thinking about my fictional characters and trying to get into their heads. So it's only natural that when I listen to music, sometimes it's with their ears. And as such, there are some songs that would have more meaning to those characters than others. In this spirit, I've begun compiling a playlist for Kiera and Gage. It's kindof a fun idea, and I intend to continue to add to it from time to time. But for now, these are the first four songs:

MANor Candy Monday - Eilean Donan Castle

This week's MANor Candy is Eilean Donan Castle on Loch Duich in the Highlands of Scotland. You'll notice that it looks very much like the castle that is used on the cover of Mortal Arts, Lady Darby Book 2. However, I will say that the actual Eilean Donan Castle is not featured in the book. The castle on the cover is meant to represent the fictitious Bambogle Castle, which stands along the shores of the Firth of Forth. When I was writing...

Favorites Friday - Perfume

This Favorites Friday I'm talking perfume. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm extremely picky about scents. Smells seem to be stronger for me than other people, particularly colognes and perfumes. I absolutely hate walking through the cosmetic department at stores like Macy's. Spending as little as five minutes in the vicinity can give me a massive headache. I've been searching for years for a perfume to replace the Curve I used to where in college, but grew tired of. I like fresh...

WIP Wednesday - MORTAL ARTS Cover Reveal

I'm so excited to share the cover of MORTAL ARTS with you!  I think it's absolutely gorgeous, and I love how well it fits with the cover of the first book, THE ANATOMIST'S WIFE.  Kudos to the Berkley Publishing Art Department - they've crafted another winner!
