Courtney M. Privett is the author of The Malora Octet, Huron, and The Bacra Chronicles. She spent her childhood in rural northeastern Michigan and graduated from the University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri University of Science and Technology) in 2005 with a degree in ceramic engineering. She lives in Washington with her husband, three young children, and three useless cats. In addition to being a writer, she is an accidental artist, a classical percussionist, a former analytical chemist, and a vivid dreamer who has both auditory-tactile synesthesia and narcolepsy.

I wrote my first five books before I had kids, and I definitely had more dedicated writing time back then. Now I sneak in writing time when I can... during naps, while the eldest is at school, after the kids go to bed, and sometimes I sneak off to the library for a couple hours on the weekend. I look forward to the day I can say I have eleven published novels, but for now I have eight published, one that will be in the next year, a story in an anthology, and an in-progress short story collection. That still feels like a lot, but I've been writing for over twelve years, so maybe it's reasonable.

Thanks for your question! Sorry it took me a little while to answer it, but I haven't been online much this month due to holidays and birthdays.(less)

Sometimes a story needs to simmer in my mind for a while before it's ready to be written, so in the meantime I follow other creative pursuits. I sew, crochet, paint, do random crafts, or simply read until my eyes can't take it anymore. Doing another activity often leads to a cascade of creativity that helps me get through stories with an ending but no beginning or awkward transition chapters.(less)

Mental Health Month

May is Mental Health Month, so I'm going to do something a little different. All* of my book royalties for this month will be donated to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).Why am I doing this? Many of my books, especially The Bacra Chronicles, were born out of my own struggles with prenatal and postpartum depression, anxiety, and depersonalization-derealization. “The dead are never truly gone. They linger in our minds and hearts and torture us with a malice they were not capable of in life.”
Courtney M. Privett, Shadows of Absolution

“Inside all of us is a light, but some beacons are darker than others, and some are so dark they never realize they are a form of light at all.”
Courtney M. Privett, Mayfly Requiem

“We were born of stars and in death we will return to them. Let's not strive to be black holes in the meantime. Let's illuminate the world instead of darkening it, instead of tearing it to pieces. Let's prove we are worthy of being stardust.”
Courtney M. Privett, Arrow of Entropy

“Our descendants deserve libraries, not barracks. They deserve to inherit a world that values both their waking lives and their dreams.”
Courtney M. Privett, Dustlight

“What is it like to be so free - so trapped, but so free? What kind of bird sings only when caught? What kind of slave outshines and rises above her master?”
Courtney M. Privett, Mayfly Requiem

“Inside all of us is a light, but some beacons are darker than others, and some are so dark they never realize they are a form of light at all.”
Courtney M. Privett, Mayfly Requiem

“We are meant to love. We are meant to lose. Love is our promise of a bittersweet end, and our desperate, hopeless struggle not to hurt anyone along the way.”
Courtney M. Privett, Mayfly Requiem

“The dead are never truly gone. They linger in our minds and hearts and torture us with a malice they were not capable of in life.”
