Feeding the writer soul

I mentioned last time that I’ve been having a hard time getting back into the groove of things. Writing has been a struggle these last few weeks. I don’t know why I thought that it would be easy to just start it back up again, but I did. And I’ve been somewhat frustrated that it hadn’t been easy.

So I’ve been trying to find ways to get me back into the spirit, start making it a routine again. I thought blogging would do it but I think i need more. Blogging is a whole different animal than fiction. It always ends up more about me and my thought process than about books or whatever else I’m talking about.I guess because it’s easy to wander off on subjects that don’t actually have anything to do with what I’m actually trying to talk about.

Like right now. LOL.

Anyway, I got the idea to start looking back at books and shows I bought last year and hadn’t read or watched yet. Picked up a book and started reading. Caught up on a show I missed. Amazingly, that’s been helping a lot.

New ideas suddenly started springing to mind. I guess that should have been a given for me. I’ve always gotten creative fuel from watching TV and reading a lot. Not always writing related. Sometimes it makes me want to draw something, or work on book covers, or crochet or whatever. But it gives me that creative energy I need.

I should have known that was what I’d need.

I know myself in that respect, and it should have occurred to me that it would be a good idea to try. But sometimes you don’t think about the obvious, and that’s where I’m at.

I decided I’m making it part of my things to do for the week to read a book or two and watch shows I’ve ignored for too long. I think with a constant influx of new creative stimuli, the writing mojo will return and I can get back up to the word count I used to get before I took my break.

I also got out of the habit of using a planner, which i think is what really screwed me up over the long term. So back into the habit I go. Also gonna start using ToDoist again, since that’s on my phone and it’s the best checklist app ever.

As for the writing update, there isn’t much to update on. I did write a little this week, but I have been struggling, so I’m taking a few days to read and chill, and hopefully will be able to sit down renewed and actually get some real writing done.

Learning to be disciplined…

Discipline is probably one of the things I’m worst at dealing with. I think that’s why 2016 really hasn’t been the best year for me. It’s not really anyone else’s fault except my own, but it is something that I struggle with.

It’s something I need to improve on.

As part of that, I’m trying to get myself back into a writing routine by blogging a little bit more here.

I don’t know what I’ll talk about yet. Might be nothing. Might be everything. Might just be random crap that happens to be on my mind that day. I don’t know yet. But the goal is a once a week update on this page to keep myself honest, more if i feel like it. It might just be writing progress, which is kind of motivating in itself to keep me writing again.

Who knows. Certainly not me.

Anyway, so I’m gonna make this a short post today. I want to get some actual writing on fiction done today. I’ll report back on how well that works out. Haha.

Have a great day, everyone!

Writing update and some other things that are going through my mind

I’ve been MIA for a good long while lately. I’m sorry about that, and I’m sorry for leaving y’all hanging, but real life happens and when it does, you have to choose what to do, and sometimes, it’s not a pretty choice. So I did, and I probably didn’t choose right, but it was the best I could do at the time.

Now I’m unraveling the mess I made, and it’s gonna take me a while, I think, but slowly but surely, things are happening the right way now. I still have a long way to go. There are broken links everywhere, because I let shit expire and I didn’t keep up with it.

You might be wondering why I’m posting this right now, when I really don’t have any new news to tell you. Partially because this is my blog and I can do what I want on it. Haha. But also because I feel it’s important to know where I’m at in order to understand why there’s nothing new to tell you.

I nuked this site and started over this week. So you’ll see a ton of broken links and images for a while. The older images, I probably won’t be able to find again. They were probably on my old computer. So older journal entries, I probably won’t touch. But going forward from here, I should be good to go.

The newsletter will be next after the website is taken care of. I haven’t sent one out in about a year, so I’ll probably do a reconfirm email for everyone just to make sure they still want to get it once it’s going again.

So now for writing stuff. I went months without writing. They were miserable. But the good thing is that I realized that I need writing in my life. I cannot be happy or survive without it there.

I started playing with a certain story… and a couple characters stood up and were like “Hey, HEY! Write me!”

And I was like “but I really don’t wanna…”

And they were like “I don’t care. You need to do it NOW.”

So I took it to a writing retreat that my writing group did, and got almost four thousand words on it. Which is damn good for a girl that ain’t written much in the last year. It was an amazing motivator to be around such awesome friends.

Cowtown CrittersBest group of writer friends a girl could have

That story is forming its way into my brain. I know what needs to happen with it. I’m rusty though, so writing is kind of a slog at this point. I love that I’m writing again, but it’s hard, way harder than I remember it being. Maybe because I’m out of practice. I don’t know.

Gonna keep going though. See where it takes me. No set dates for the next release. No promises. I’m gonna write it. Then probably rewrite it. After a year, y’all deserve the best from me.

See you guys soon.

Suzan

Has it really been this long?

RockstarHas it really been a year? Well, I suppose almost it has. 2015 was a nutty year for me. A lot of real life happenings kept me from doing what I love, writing and releasing books for y’all. I won’t bore you guys with details, mainly because I don’t really want to relive my own mistakes at this point.

Time flies when you’re busy, and even more when you’re avoiding things. But that’s ok. The important thing is that I made it through, and I’m getting myself back on the right track. You’ll be seeing more of me soon, that’s for sure. I want to get some more things situated first.

I’m job hunting again, and that’s taking up a lot of time. I’m in that in-between stage where I’m overqualified for entry level, but I’m not really mid level qualified yet either. It’s like the dead zone for jobs. While writing pays most of the bills, I like the convenience of regular jobs for insurance and tax purposes. Plus it gets me out of the house, and we’ve all realized how much of a hermit I can be.

Anyway, I’ll be posting more soon, just not for a few days. Have a lot of things coming down the pipeline, like reviving my Patreon feed, but I’d like to just get through the end of the next week right now. So we’ll start with that and see how it goes.

As always, you’re welcome to hit me up on Twitter and Facebook. I will be lurking a lot, so please don’t be shy about leaving me messages. I need motivation to stop being shy and start chatting with y’all again. Haha.

What I’ve been up to

It’s been a week or so since I posted here. I’ve realized that when I get into Editing Mode, pretty much everything in my life takes a back seat. I think editing just takes a large amount of brain power for me, so it’s much harder to multi-task.

Anywho, edits on Scoring His Heart are done. ARC requests have gone out, and final files are uploaded to the retailers. So, pretty much now, that book is put to bed for a couple weeks, which means it’s time to concentrate on something new.

I revamped my Patreon feed this week. If you haven’t seen or heard of Patreon, it’s a site for creative content producers. Youtubers, podcasters, artists, writers… they’re all on it. We create stuff, post it, and people pledge a certain amount of money for the artists they support. It’s kind of like a Kickstarter, except that it’s long-term, and not confined to a specific project.

I love writing. That’s why I do what I do. And I have all these little projects that aren’t right for publishing to retailers. We don’t have enough control over pricing to make that fair or viable for readers. So they just sit and collect dust on my hard drive.

I love writing short stories and flash fiction, so I thought Patreon would be perfect. People can pledge what they want, they can cap it if they think I’m writing too much, and they can stop giving their support at any time. It’s where I can post all the little stuff I write that doesn’t have a home so people can enjoy it.

So that’s happening. I’m enjoying it, and I hope y’all will join me there. :)

After having my kids home for four freaking days (we had two days of ice here), I’m off to enjoy the quiet by getting some writing done. Particularly, this really sweet and sexy short story that will be the March short story for Patreon folks.

The best feeling in the world…

…is when you finish a book. Not just the zero draft. But the much tougher revisions and edits, when it’s actually a coherent piece of work that people might enjoy. I cannot express how overjoyed I am when I finish a book and get that reprieve, where I can breathe for just a second before moving on to the next project.

This time, though, I’m taking a week off to recharge, and get caught up on the business end of publishing. Apparently, I am incapable of actually doing anything while I’m editing. I balance this stuff all the time when I’m writing, but not when i’m editing. Weird, huh?

So, this weekend.  I have all these books from the RITA contest, which is a published author contest from RWA. It’s kind of like the Oscars for romance writers. So, I’m hoping to read a couple of them this weekend. I’m kind of excited. A few of them are right up my alley in terms of taste.

Things to note this week:

The serial for my newsletter peeps has started. The first one went out this past Wednesday. You can check out the first installment over at my Patreon feed, if you’re not on the newsletter. All subsequent installments will be for my newsletter folks for free, so this is your taste. If you like it, you can either join the newsletter (make sure you’re on the All Butler Mail option) or you can support my Patreon feed. It’s up to you.

Don’t forget to check out the Organized by Suz blog this week. I geek out on calendar making and goal setting again, but this is kind of my bag, you know? I’m not sure what I’ll blog about next week there, but I’m having a really good time with that blog. It’s my fun project.

Oh, and I almost forgot. Killing Honor is on sale this month. It’s part of the iBooks Bestselling Romance promotion. Just click on the image below to take you to the iBooks store. :)

Getting ready for a new life

pinup2I’ve lived a long time where I am right now, and it’s a crowded house. Five people live here, including my boys and I, plus a dog, and in the past, three cats, two hamsters, and two dogs.  To say I’m ready for a new place is a great understatement.

This year is all about buying a new house and creating this whole new independent life for me and the boys. I wanted to move cities, maybe even states, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that a lot of my personal issues come from moving around all my life. So, I decided that staying here, in my little town, for another six years until the boys graduate high school is a small price to pay to make sure they don’t have the same issues I do.

And even though I won’t start the house buying process until later this year, I’m starting to do the purging thing. I’m starting to think about what I’ll take, what I’ll pack, and what I’m going to throw out. That last one is hard, because I’m totally a pack rat, and that harkens back to my moving around as a child as well. When you’re not stable, you cling to any kind of normalcy you can get, and sometimes, that manifests as hoarding. If you let go of the things you’ve collected, it’s like you’re letting go of your anchor, and you’re afraid you might float away if you do. It sucks to feel that way, but it’s a necessary evil because I don’t want my new house to look like it belongs on Hoarders.

moxiesdragonsSo I’ll probably be talking about some moving topics on my organization blog in the future, only because it’s at the forefront of my mind right now.

Oh, and a friend of mine bought this fantastic set of stuffed dragons for me this week.

They’re dog toys, so I gave one to my dog. I really thought she’d tear the thing apart in about 30 seconds, but she just carries it around everywhere. It has to be near her and last night, she even slept with it in the bed.

This has to be the best stuffed toy ever. For real.

Lookit how happy she is…
