Goddess and Gods: Hel - Norse Goddess
This is a nice interpretation of Hel. Something not mentioned here is that in some versions of the Baldur myth Odin asked Loki to kill Baldur because Odin wanted him to go to Hel, the only realm that would not be touched by Ragnarok so that Baldur might survive the clash of Gods and Giants.
Also, it should be mentioned that the Germans viewed Hel benignly, someone you might want to come to you if you were in great pain and suffering. She wasn’t seen as a devil who necessarily punished the dead.
I have a slightly different take on Hel in I Bring the Fire, but she isn’t evil. I’m actually a leetle tired of that interpretation of her.
