I formerly edited books for Barking Rain Press. I continue to do freelance editing and writing as Robin Layne Enterprises. I'm available for more writing and editing assignments. Please write me if you'd like to try my services. I keep a blog about my work-in-progress, AVS: The Anti-Vampirism Society, a YA series of novels.

Bio:
I've always loved stories. From earliest childhood I enjoyed hearing my mother read to me and watching movies, acting out fairy tales, drawing pictures and dictating to my teacher the words to go with them. I made my first picture book in second grade, and in fifth grade, wrote my own poetry book. When other kids teased me, I thought, "I'm going to be a famous artist and writer someday, and when they read about me in

Most recently, I am returning to a series of interviews of my vampires on my Wordpress blog, part of a project called "The Vampire Lover's Blog Award," sponsored by Francis Franklin here on Goodreads. I'm also working on an article about my adventures as a Salvation Army bell ringer, to submit to the War Cry, a magazine of the Salvation Army. I often write to various prompts in a weekly writing group I facilitate--short pieces about my life, thoughts, and fiction. One recent prompt came from the Writer's Digest website: "Have your main character write you a letter." I had Mary Lodge, the leader of the AVS, write to me, I wrote back with questions I would like her to answer so I can know her better. She started her second letter, but some of my questions aren't ready to be answered yet. This week, I also started the second of my Turtle Soup zines; for more information on that, see my answer to "What was your idea for your latest book?" (less)

But before you get too far, I suggest you make sure you know the mechanics of writing, too, so that people will be able to clearly understand and enjoy what you put on those imaginative pages. Take some college courses in grammar, because today it's apparently not taught while you're growing up. Learn the difference between past tense, present tense, and so on. Learn how to structure your writing. Learn how to use punctuation properly, to your advantage. Believe it or not, there are rules to writing in the English language (and all other languages), and your manuscripts will stand out amid the submissions that traditional publishers get if you use those rules. The rules preserve communication; yes, it's okay to break them from time to time, but only for an intended effect. You need to know them before you can break them.
If you think I'm wrong, consider what a house would look like if it's made with crooked boards of the wrong lengths and nails pounded in haphazardly; it's not likely to even stand up, and supposing it does, it'll look horrible and leak. So it is with written stories. Trust me, knowing how to write will NOT hamper your creativity; it will help it to soar.
If you can't be bothered with those "pesky details," be prepared to find a decent editor to work with you on your books. It'll cost you money, but it will be well worth it.
Today a lot of books get published, and even become bestsellers, without being functionally literate, I admit. But careful readers and editors hold those in derision. It's much better to write a good story WELL; it's my feeling that it has a chance to be well-loved for many years to come if it has that kind of work put into it.
Other advice, which you're likely to hear from other authors: Write often. Practice makes better and better, although you will never feel for long that anything you've written is perfect. Remember that whatever happens to you in your life, "It's all copy"--meaning, it adds depth and breadth to your writing, whether you write personal experience, fiction, or opinion.

Hi, Happy Friday, Robin!

I'm so glad the visit with your family went to well, and it's definitely one to cherish.:)

Given the two choices, I really like the title, "From The Red Read Robin." The play-on words is a nice touch.

No, that doesn't bother me at all. I appreciate the heads-up. Thank you! I'll go correct that right away!

Have a wonderful day and a blessed weekend!

Just read your review. Sounds interesting. Found a typo you might correct if you can: "On scene" should read "One scene." Hope my picking doesn't bother you; I'm just practicing my copyediting.

I'm not sure of the title yet. I'm leaning toward "My Night-Blooming Series," but I also like "From the Red Read Robin," or some such. Would appreciate input.

I read a bunch of pages of homework today and then found out I had been reading the wrong book! Besides that, I have been tired a lot lately. My visit with family was the best! A great experience to remember.

I want to read your review, and am trying to decide whether to stick to my seat before the computer right now or go do something else for a bit. In any case, I will read the review soon.

Are you still searching for a title for your blog, or did you figure that out..? Let me know, please.

Have a wonderful day, enjoy the rest of your week!

Dustin You're very welcome, Robin.:) It's amazing how the Holy Spirit works, and what it's able to convey, isn't it? God never ceased to amaze and astonish me.

Oh, an online editing course sounds exciting. I bet you'll learn a LOT! Are you enjoying it so far?

I'm sorry to hear about the tendonitis in your shoulder...

Yes, as a matter of fact, that is one of us many ultrasound photos. We're having a boy, due November 21st!! There are additional photos on my profile, if you'd like to see them. Please feel free to leave any comments you'd like. And and all are always welcome.:) Thank you for asking!

Have a wonderful day, enjoy the rest of your week!!

Thanks, Dustin. Sometimes the Spirit moves me with stuff I never would have thought to say and I get blessed by it, too. I started an online college class today (in editing), and I haven't read the comments in the threads here yet because I've been busy with that. It may take a while for me to catch up. I spent the day yesterday straightening up my very messy desk, and the tendonitis in my right shoulder is really acting up. It hurts to type. Off to get a couple ibuprophens again! And then back to reading my schoolwork.
Say, is that an ultrasound in your in your profile pic? Are you an up-and-coming father? Or is it something else?

Dustin Hi, Robin!

You are very welcome. I feel honored to be your first friend here.

You know, it's a rare thing (for me, anyway,) to know someone that shared my birthday. I've heard of some that are close to that, but never the exact day. That's really cool!

I just want you to know that I love reading your posts in the Hardcore Faith group. They're very encouraging and inspiring. Thank you!

Have a wonderful day, and enjoy the rest of your week!

I'll talk again soon.:)
