Lily Java amazes me, first of all, as an author, because she’s done something spectacular in writing a duet of more than six hundred pages! Secondly, this first story, Ethan’s Choice, itself is a tour de force. Java writes about Ethan and Serena, their meeting, their falling in love, and the baggage they each bring into a relationship juxtaposed against a backdrop of the Bronx in the 1970’s and 1980’s . Her words draw the reader into the boroughs of NYC as if you lived and breathed in the “city that never sleeps.”
As you get to know Ethan and Serena, you also meet everyone else who played a part in their lives, particularly Ethan’s as Java expertly peeled back layer after layer of the nuances that made Ethan the man he was and what ultimately led him to make the choice he made. I confess, I read Ethan’s choice with a bit of low-key jealousy, because I kept thinking how I want to be as adept with stringing together my words and phrases as Ms. Java is. One particular scene that I practically salivated over was the one where there’s a deliberate POV shift involving Ian, the red-head and his run-in with an avenging angel, if you will. That was brilliant!
I found Ethan’s Choice to be rich in description that doesn’t succumb to purple prose, which paints a vivid picture of the story of Ethan’s turbulent life and Serena’s seemingly charmed one. The fraught relationship that Ethan has with both his father and his uncle make for a riveting read, placing the reader right in the middle of the actions that made Ethan the man he became, despite resisting his arrival there literally “kicking against the pricks.”
If you want to read a story that goes so much further than the surface of a relationship, one that carries you all the way back to its origins, that will have you rooting harder for these fictitious characters than you’ve ever done in your life, you must read, Ethan’s Choice.

Serena was lying in his bed, reading. They’d made love late that afternoon. He’d elevated the hurt wrist and told her not to move it, no matter what he did. She was obedient, though he did not make it at all easy for her. Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 3 Recap
Last night’s episode of Game of Thrones literally slayed me. Going in I was concerned that many of our beleaugered characters would join the Army of the Dead, and while some did, surprisingly most of our favorites remained unscathed for now.
The Battle at Winterfell began with the Dothraki Screamers leading the charge against the Night King’s Army of the Dead after receiving the gift of fire for their swords from Melisandre who appeared out of the mist just before the battle began. Sadly, a couple thousand Dothraki are no match for one hundred thousand wights, so unfortunately, these brave warriors were dispensed of very quickly. Only a few Dothraki, their horses, and Ser Jorah emerged from that early skirmish.
This unfortunately showed our heroes that they truly had their work cut out for them with this army, because they were literally outnumbered several times over. Preparation and luck would be key to winning this battle.
The Night King’s use of mist and/or weather manipulation rendered the dragons almost useless, but they managed to beat the Army back a few times with dragon fire, but sheer numbers made it impossible for them to be everywhere they needed to be during the battle.
Melisandre’s magic proved to be an immense help to Jon and Danerys’s battle on a couple of occasions, particularly when the trenches needed to be lit and neither Jon and Dany nor the dragons were able to see clearly enough to do so.This kept the Army at bay for a while so the warriors could get their second wind. However, the Night King sacrificed some of his army to smother the fire in strategic places in the trenches so that the majority of his army could cross the trench and make their way to Winterfell’s castle walls. This proved an effective strategy for the Night King’s Army because once they were through, their sheer numbers allowed them to scale the walls handily.
Meanwhile, Arya, who proved to be a very effective little fighting machine courtesy of her training as a Faceless Man, was able to put away quite a few of the wights, but once the Castle became overrun with them, it became an insane battle for all our heroes. While most of them continued to battle it out in the courtyard, Arya, The Hound (Sandor Clegane), and Beric Dondarion battled wights that had infiltrated the castle itself.
As the fighting continued, Winterfell’s army lost the following: little Lady Lyanna Mormont, who took on a giant despite being crushed by it, she was able to stab it in the eye with dragonglass before she took her dying breath; Edd Tollett aka Dolorous Edd, who Jon left in charge as the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch after he was stabbed and killed by his brethren; Lord Beric Dondarian died valiantly serving the purpose for which the Lord of Light allowed him to be revived from the dead six times to fulffill; Ser Jorah Mormont fell as he was protecting his Queen whom he loved as he and Danerys were surrounded by wights after Drogon took flight without Dany to rid himself from being overrun by wights; Theon Greyjoy and the Ironborn who volunteered to wait with Bran in the Godswood to protect him from the Night King were overcome though they all fought heroically.
The women, children, elderly, infirmed and non-fighting men who were in the Crypts did not get slaughtered as many predicted, although the Night King did raise the dead from the Stark crypts. Our favorites among this group were able to elude the newly raised wights in the Crypt until the end.
Surprisingly, it is Arya who gets the honor of killing the NIght King and winning the war for Winterfell. Her training as a Faceless Man allowed her to sneak up on the Night King and stab him with her Valerian Steel knife, which she was gifted by Bran last season. This began a chain reaction that took out all the White Walkers, Viserion, and all the Wights.
Once Melisandre saw that the battle was won, she calmly walked out of Winterfell, removed her magic amulet and died quietly in the snow under the watchful eye of Ser Davos Seaworth who was going to execute her to avenge Princess Shireen Baratheon if Melisandre had not committed suicide.
There are only three episodes left now, and there is no rest for the weary. Our heroes will now have to turn their sights to King’s Landing where Cersai is still languishing on the iron throne waiting for the army numbers at Winterfell to dwindle so her twenty thousand golden company army and the lannister soldiers will try to defend the capital against what’s left of Jon and Danerys’s army and her dragons. As before, I won’t hazard to guess who dies and in what order,. Last week, the only person I predicted who died was Theon Greyjoy.
I’m wondering now that Ser Jaime Lannister has survived, who will he fight for in the next battle? Although he affirmed that Cersei is truly pregnant, he must know that she won’t be forgiving him anytime soon for abandoning her, and in fact she has a price on his and Tyrion’s head–their executioner to be is none other than Ser Bronn of the Blackwater, a sellsword whom they have both hired in the past to do their dirty work.
Well, my Rock Star Legend Series isn’t as brutal as Game of Thrones, but it does feature three books, Savage, Redemption, and Revival. For those who read the series previously, books 1 and 2 share Brody and Skylar’s story, and the upcoming book 3 shares Alyssa and Dylan’s story. I’ve been having so much fun writing the story for this new couple in The Rock Star Legend Series and I hope you will enjoy reading about all of them as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them.

Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 2 Recap
This recent episode set up some very interesting dynamics. As I predicted, Jaime Lannister was allowed to fight with the North. Bran didn’t out him, so he’s good for now. This doesn’t mean he’s safe from death, though. Not only will he be fighting the Night King’s Army of the dead with his weak arm, but Cersei has a price on his head. Brienne vouches for Jaime,and Sansa vouches for Brienne,
Arya seeks Gendry out in the forge where she shows him she’s not the little girl he traveled with after their escape from Harrenhaal. Jaime finally makes an apology to Bran for pushing him out of the tower window all those years ago, but Bran being so other right now only cares that Jaime is another fighter to aid in the battle at Winterfell.
Sansa made it known to Danerys that if she’s going to rule in Westeros, the North does not want to be under her rule. Ser Davos feeds the troops while GIlly gathers the elderly, infirmed, women and children to wait out the battle in the Crypt. As Greyworm and Missandei make plans to go back to her home of Naath when the war is over, because they don’t feel particularly welcome in the North (do you blame them?).
As a plan is devised to defeat the Night King using Bran (who has his mark) a bait, Danerys wonders why Jon has been avoiding her after their dragon ride. Meanwhile, Jaime and Brienne’s fireside reunion is crashed by Tormund who gets into a bit of pissing contest with Jaime, and shares how he got his name Giantsbane. But Jaime wins the contests hands-down when he Knights Brienne. Of course he’d already sworn to fight with her in the batttle, because he has a connection with her and probably feels more comfortable fighting for a friend who’d have his back and not a foe (because all of the North as his foes, right?).
Arya chats with the hound and Beric Dondarion for a while, but finds them a rather morbid pair, so she goes off to find Gendry, who was her childhood crush. He tells her of his parentage, but she has other things in mind. She allows him to divest her of her pesky virginity before the battle with the NIght King ensues.
Ser Jorah is given the gift of a Valyrian sword by Samwell Tarly, so Ser Jorah might be okay coming out of this battle, unless he dies saving his cousin Lyanna Mormont who is adamant about fighting alongside the men. Sam will have dragonglass to fight with, just as he did once before when he was confronted by white walkers, but as Sam and Gilly are both so beloved, one of them will likely not come out of this battle alive (most likely Sam since he’ll be out on the front lines, and Gilly will be int he Crypt).
Jon/ being the most like Ned Stark is so honorable he just had to tell Danerys what he knew, and it was probably unavoidable, because she realized he’d been avoiding her. I think Jon was premature in telling Danerys the truth, though. He should have waited until after the battle at Winterfell, maybe even after taking care of Cersei, but I think this news will definitely cause a rift between them.
There are only four episodes left, so things are going to move pretty fast for our heroes and heroines in Westeros from now on. While I originally thought they might not defeat the Night King in their first go, I believe they just might do so now with many casualties and losses of characters we won’t want to see go. I won’t hazard to guess who dies and in what order, but newly Knighted Ser Brianne of Tarth seems likely, as well as Theon Greyjoy, Tormund Giantsbane (who will probably have to take down the undead Giant), Varys (and him only because Melisandre predicted his death previously).
Well, my Rock Star Legend Series isn’t as brutal as Game of Thrones, but it does feature three books, Savage, Redemption, and Revival. For those who read the series previously, books 1 and 2 share Brody and Skylar’s story, and the upcoming book 3 shares Alyssa and Dylan’s story. I’ve been having so much fun writing the story for this new couple in The Rock Star Legend Series and I hope you will enjoy reading about all of them as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them.
