Rabid Reader Review: Vigilante by Kady Cross

Vigilante by Kady Cross
Published by Harlequin on April 1st 2017
ISBN: 9781488015328A brutally honest, uncompromising story about a teen girl who decides to take matters into her own hands
It's senior year, and Hadley and her best friend, Magda, should be starting the year together. Instead, Magda is dead and Hadley is alone. Raped at a party the year before and humiliated, Magda was driven to take her own life and Hadley is forced to see her friend's attackers in the classroom every day. Devastated, enraged and needing an outlet for her grief, Hadley decides to get a little justice of her own.
Donning a pink ski mask and fueled by anger, Hadley goes after each of the guys one by one, planning to strip them of their dignity and social status the way they did to Magda. As the legend of the pink-masked Vigilante begins to take on a life of its own, Hadley's revenge takes a turn for the dangerous. Could her need for vengeance lead her down a path she can't turn back from?

MY THOUGHTS:
Very recently, I have discussed with a fellow blogger and author about the fact that, quite often, the hard-hitting, real life topics are shied away from in Young Adult fiction. For a lot of the genre, sheltering today’s youth from any topic that is uncomfortable at all is something that seems to have become the status quo. Be very aware that this book is not one of the ones that do this, and there are some very serious topics addressed right at the outset in this book. The topics of rape, violence, and suicide are very prominently addressed. And I think it is about time.
While for some, these topics may be difficult to read, I think it is critical that we move away from the tendency to shy away from them. Making these topics more prominent in fiction will make them less taboo and abstract, which will make it easier for teens to talk about them when they are real and personal to them.
I managed to read this in pretty much one sitting, in a single night, something I have not been able to do in a very long time between reading slumps, work, school and life in general.
While some aspects of this story may seem to be a bit cliché, the author takes a stab at topics that I think really do need more attention. As a mom of girls, I hope that my daughters will feel empowered enough to speak out. While I would hope they wouldn’t resort to violence unless necessary, I want them to know that it is okay for them to defend themselves.
I applaud the author for taking on these very real, very emotional issues and portraying them in a way that doesn’t denigrate those who have experienced them.
While I do not condone Hadley’s behavior of putting herself in dangerous situations, it is refreshing to see this take on things and I look forward to reading more from this author.

This year I am doing things a little differently than I usually do. Normally, I do a separate post each day for updates, but this time, I am just going to run the one post and update it each day. I have embarked on a new journey, having just begun college this week. So I am truly and completely insane for thinking I can do this. Hence, getting this post up a full 24 hours after the event has actually started!
I am also going to keep it kind of casual for the same reason. I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself and feel overwhelmed with everything else I have going on.
What I Plan to Attempt to Accomplish This Time
Time Devoted to Reading
I will be reading a day/on the weekend/all week.
My Goals
Finish Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets reread

I know You Have Been Hearing The Crickets
It has been eerily, creepily quiet here lately. I know you guys have felt it. But there has been a lot going on behind the scenes that took a lot of time and energy to process and I had to get all of my ducks in a row.
We moved. As in, a really long distance. We had to make some very hard decisions in the process concerning my oldest two children who, for the time being, are with their dad while my husband, myself, and the little one are up in Michigan. We are starting over. There are a lot of very long and complicated reasons and the majority of them are health related on both mine and my husband’s part. There are some things we need to tend to that are better dealt with here. A lot of people have been really supportive and we are grateful for that. We wouldn’t have been able to do this otherwise.
All things considered, things are going okay. There are ups and downs in any major transition and that is to be expected, but we are holding our own.
The other major change in our lives is that, as of this week, I am officially a college student. My classes officially start on the 2nd and I will be pursuing a degree in Special Education. It’s something that has become a passion of mine the more we become heavily invested in the education system with our little miss and I see the changes I wish I could make. I realize how much easier it would be to make those changes from within the system. And I want to have the effect I have seen her teachers have on her. They need teachers like that where we live. So that’s what I want to do.
My writing has been…. Problematic. I have hit a lot of fits and starts and some stories are talking to me more than others and while some were intended to come sooner, they have been moved around to accommodate for the characters in my head with the loudest voices whose stories beg to be told. There is so much that begs to be written and so few hours in the day.
I have not forgotten about my reading or my blogging and hope to recommit to it in the new year as this is where my passion for these things really and truly first sparked. I have taken up bullet journaling and it seems to be doing a better job of keeping me on track than any other system I have used before. Hopefully, it is just what I need to get things organized the way I need moving forward.
How has the end of 2016 been for all of you? What are your big plans for 2017? Did anything huge happen that completely derailed your life in a good way that you never expected? Tell me all about it in the comments. I love to hear from my readers.

Rabid Reader Review: Wild by Cheryl Strayed

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed
Published by Vintage on March 26th 2013
ISBN: 0307476073
#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER
At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State—and she would do it alone. Told with suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

MY THOUGHTS:
This book was one that I entered into with very little expectation, because I had no idea what to expect. I will readily admit that I picked it up largely because of how prominently it featured in Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life.
I am coming away with a profound sense of a reality check when it comes to obstacles and whether or not they are insurmountable. This book, if you let it, can seriously change your life.
It talks of a journey that is not for the faint of heart, and the subject material is definitely not suitable for younger readers in some places.
As this is a memoir, we follow the author through a series of events in her life that leave her seemingly shattered, broken, unable to move on. Eventually, she finds herself at a place where she needs something profound, life affirming, life changing. So she takes to the trail.
What I think I like the most about this book is that it is real. She does not try to sugar coat the things she has been through or the things she has done. She owns up to the mistakes she has made and wants to be a better person.
There are times where this book will rip your heart open and emotions will come to the forefront that you didn’t know that you could feel from reading a book. I know I didn’t. As a writer myself, if I can impact people this profoundly with my work, I will know that I have arrived.
This really is a must read for anyone. If you feel like your life has hit a brick wall, like you have no idea where you are going or what you are doing, open up these pages and travel the Pacific Crest Trail with Ms. Strayed. Not only will you not regret it, but you will never be the same.

Welcome Wednesday: Cookie O’Gorman
Buy on Amazon Goodreads
Welcome Wednesday is a feature started by Krystal George in order to help spread the networking around and help support indie authors and get the word out about their work and what they are working on. Let’s spread the love!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week we are welcoming Cookie O’Gorman to the blog and spreading some love for her book!
**Welcome Wednesday**
Adorkable
Adorkable (ah-dor-kuh-bul): Descriptive term meaning to be equal parts dorky and adorable. For reference, see Sally Spitz.
Seventeen-year-old Sally Spitz is done with dating. Or at least, she’s done with the horrible blind dates/hookups/sneak attacks her matchmaking bestie, Hooker, sets her up on. There’s only so much one geek girl and Gryffindor supporter can take.
Her solution: she needs a fake boyfriend. And fast.
Enter Becks, soccer phenom, all-around-hottie, and Sally’s best friend practically since birth. When Sally asks Becks to be her F.B.F. (fake boyfriend), Becks is only too happy to be used. He’d do anything for Sal–even if that means giving her PDA lessons in his bedroom, saying she’s “more than pretty,” and expertly kissing her at parties.
The problem: Sally’s been in love with Becks all her life–and he’s completely clueless.
This book features two best friends, one special edition Yoda snuggie, countless beneath-the-ear kisses and begs the question:
Who wants a real boyfriend when faking it is so much more fun?
Excerpt:
Meeting his gaze, I forced out the words, “Ready to make it official?”
Becks grinned, and the sight of that familiar expression, the look in those eyes I’d loved forever, was enough to strengthen my resolve.
Reaching up, I gave myself no time to reconsider.
My lips were on his the next instant, meeting, feeling, rejoicing in this moment I’d never thought but always hoped would happen. I knew Becks was surprised, could feel it in the stiffness in his shoulders, the tight set to his mouth. But it didn’t matter. I was kissing Becks, my best friend, my Han Solo, my one. This was the best moment of my life. I was certain it couldn’t get any better.
But then Becks started kissing me back.
His arms wrapped around my waist, his lips guiding mine, as he went from passive passenger along for the ride to full-on conductor. I gasped as he bent me back over his arm, and felt him grin through the kiss. My toes just skimming the floor, supported almost entirely by Becks’s strength, I was happy to let him lead. Becks wasn’t just a great kisser. He was a master. Far as first kisses go, it was a showstopper.
Rabid Reader Ramblings (11) Finding Balance: Blogging, Life, Writing, Self Employment
Rabid Reader Ramblings is my “discussion post” feature here at Just Another Rabid Reader. It is a post in which I discuss bookish or blogging related things! Please feel free to comment, no matter if you agree or disagree because discussion and healthy debate are what these posts are for~!
It’s been a crazy week. With the craziness of the last week, and all the changes in my life in the last two, I realized that my routine needed a revamp. Therefore, I am actually sitting at my desk at 6 in the morning. And yep, this is one of the rare occasions when my post is not drafted ahead of time.
I read a great article this week on how people can help their loved ones who are self-employed and that got me to thinking about how those of us who are self-employed need to help ourselves. We need to set boundaries and stick to them.
This was the first full week where I settled into my official role helping to run the editing department of what is now a small publisher, but I have a feeling is not going to stay small for long. We are now in a period of growth, having had the door open for only a few months and already with 8 authors officially on the books and several more writing, with a couple that TPTB are just waiting for the contracts to come in the mail on. The editing department consists of me and three women, one of whom is on hiatus until after her wedding because she needs to focus on that now and not get overwhelmed. I planned my wedding. Twice. I know where her head is.
I also work a day job full-time that feeds my family and I need to make sure that gets enough of my attention so that it continues to do so. It is also a self-employment situation and once again, balance comes into play here.
Add to that, I am one of the 8 authors in the publishing house, with two books slated for publication between now and January. One is already finished and sits ready for my editor. One is not. Again, balance. Are you seeing a pattern here?
Then I run this blog, poorly most days; and a small book marketing company. I wear many hats. Before you ask, yes, I probably am crazy. My husband and children have pondered that one for years.
The problem in all that in finding that balance, of course, is me. I need to set clear boundaries with my friends and family and stick to them. One of the things I do is make myself a schedule, and try to stick to it. I did really well with this for about 4 months, but then summer came and that went by the wayside. I need to get back to that and I have started again in the last couple of days.
This morning, and yes I know it is Saturday, but I had my alarm set for 5 a.m. Of course, I hit the snooze until 5:30, but by 5:30 I was out of bed. By 5:45 I was at my desk, with a cup of coffee, a cup of iced tea, and a pot of water brewed on my side desk for hot tea as the day went on for between the coffee cups. In my coffee cup is a scoop of Muscle Milk Protein Powder. I have already taken my morning meds, and I am ready to start my day. I have written out this blog post, and it is only 6:30.
Now, on to those boundaries. When I tell people I am busy and I have to work, I need to remember to stick to that. I have an iPhone that has a ringer switch. I need to turn that switch to off and if it is not a business call, I need to not answer during my working hours. Just because I work from home does not mean I can treat my working hours like playtime and slack off. As long as I treat my working hours professionally, those around me will too.
Yes, I work loooong hours. No I don’t get a lot of days off or down time; but if I treat my working time professionally and learn to respect myself, I will model to those around me that I deserve respect. They will learn to appreciate the time I do give them that much more. This is something we all have to learn when making this type of transition.
You won’t get it perfect a lot of the time. I have been self-employed and working from home for over 15 years. I still don’t have this down perfect, and some days I don’t even come close to getting it right.
I waffled back and forth for the last three months on writing a post like this, but after the last week I decided it was time. I am sure someone else has been in this situation and could benefit from it, too. So despite my fear of putting myself out there, here I am. It’s 6 in the morning and I am baring my soul to you so that you might learn from my mistakes and maybe get a few steps closer to that elusive work-life balance that we all crave.
What are some ways you balance your blogger life and the rest of your life? Do you work from home? How do you manage it? Is your family supportive or do they constantly expect your attention because you “are at home so you must have loads of free time?” Let me know in the comments.
My Thoughts:
This short novella gives us a glimpse into Hunter’s backstory and we get to see some of why he is the way he is when he first appears on the scene. We meet Clare, a girl from Hunter’s past, and Hunter’s dad and his Uncle Jay. We get a look at some of the “lessons” they were trying to teach him and what led up to what happened to them before the start of the main books of the series to cause Hunter to be the way that he is.
It explains some things, but leaves some others very wide open and unexplained and unanswered. While part of me feels sympathetic to Hunter’s situation, part of me also feels a bit cynical and jaded to it.
A quote that stood out to me:
It would figure that the first time a girl wanted to talk to him, he’d knock her flat.
I just didn’t picture Hunter as that awkward with girls.
We get a bit of understanding about why Hunter always seems to be armed, and why he acts the way he does and keeps everyone at arms length, but I feel like I am left with more questions after reading it, and I am going to have to keep reading to find out what else is going on here.
If you haven’t read any of this series yet, you definitely should. There is something unique about it and the author does a great job of painting the picture. I can’t wait to read more.
About Brigid Kemmerer
Brigid Kemmerer was born in Omaha, Nebraska, though her parents quickly moved her all over the United States, from the desert in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to the lakeside in Cleveland, Ohio, and several stops in between, eventually settling near Annapolis, Maryland. Brigid started writing in high school, and her first real “novel” was about four brothers causing a ruckus in the suburbs. Those four brothers are the same boys living in the pages of The Elemental Series, so Brigid likes to say she’s had four teenage boys taking up space in her head for the last seventeen years. (Though sometimes that just makes her sound nuts.)
Brigid loves hearing from people, and she probably won’t refer to herself in the third person like this if you actually correspond with her. She has a smartphone surgically attached to her person, and email is the best way to reach her. Her email address is [email protected].
ISBN: 9781472113825As an air Elemental, 17-year-old Emily Morgan doesn’t have much power. That’s okay—she knows what happens to kids who do.
Like Michael Merrick. He’s an earth Elemental, one with enough power to level cities. Which makes him sexy, dangerous, and completely off limits. At least according to Emily’s family.But her summer job puts her in close contact with Michael, and neither of them can help the attraction they feel. When forces of nature like theirs collide, one misstep could get someone killed. Because Emily’s family doesn’t just want her to stay away from him.
This novella sheds some light on how this whole mess really started. We see some of what occurred when Michael was 17 years old and a bit of what happened when the original deal was made, before the Merrick’s parents died.
I always have mixed feelings about these little companion novellas and short stories. In this case, I feel like it ended too soon and I wish that some more of the gaps had been filled in.
It does shed some light on why Michael is so hesitant to get involved, and I was kind of surprised at some of the conclusions I was able to arrive at after reading this one. You really need to give this series a read for yourself. You won’t regret it.
