This is the first of PD Workman’s books I’ve read, and it certainly won’t be the last. The author has the ability to pull you into her story and keep you firmly rooted there until the end. Her characters are interesting and have depth. She isn’t afraid to explore the areas of our society that many would rather sweep under the rug. Nasty Breaks is the first book that I have read in the Lee Ofsted Mysteries series by writing team Charlotte and Aaron Elkins. No problem reading it as a stand alone mystery; the plot and character dynamics were easy to grasp, allowing me to dive right into the story without any prior knowledge.

In this installment, Lee Ofsted unexpectedly finds herself entangled in a kidnapping and murder mystery while conducting a golf class on Block Island. Does she shy away from investigating it? I’ll give you a hint — not a chance. Boyfriend Graham Sheldon, a former cop, is there to help her out and give a few ideas from the law enforcement perspective, but he’s not there when Lee figures it all out.

What starts as a seemingly relaxing “working vacation” for Lee quickly turns into anything but a break!

…it was a pleasure, for a change, not to be fretting about some tournament she was on her way to. All she had to do for the next five days was give a few short-game lessons, do a little friendly coaching and collect her $5,000.

My Favorite Gluten-Free Cookie Recipes

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:

1/2 cup sugar1/4 cup shortening, melted1/4 cup honey1 cup buckwheat flour1/2 cup arrowroot powder1/4 tsp salt1/2 tsp baking soda2 Tb non-dairy milk1/2 cup chocolate chips

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.In a large mixing bowl, combine the buckwheat flour, arrowroot powder, salt, and baking soda.In a separate bowl, cream the sugar, honey and shortening.Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix. Add milk 1 Tb at a time and scrape down sides. Only add as much as necessary to form a dough that will stick together. Too much, and it will be very difficult to handle and will spread out when baked.Roll the dough into small balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Flatten each ball slightly with the palm of your hand.Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes, or until they are lightly golden brown around the edges.Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.Enjoy!Ginger Cookies

And the cat is so very well done. Acts like a typical cat, but a lot smarter than his human. This is a story that you don’t want to put down.

In The Second Mouse, by Archer Mayor, Joe Gunther is on the case of an apparent natural death. Or maybe the woman drank herself to death. But Joe is suspicious of the apparently natural death of a young woman and can’t shake his doubts about the man who may have wanted her out of the picture. Is he onto something significant, or is he simply searching for drama in an otherwise uneventful case? After all, every death leaves behind its share of unanswered questions.

Meanwhile, a second storyline unfolds involving three individuals on a crime spree that appears initially unrelated to Gunther’s investigation. Until Mayor brings the two storylines together, I have absolutely no idea! I am looking forward to finding out. An intriguing case. Good characterization and a page-turner police procedural.

Summary

The Second Mouse takes Joe Gunther and his team off their Brattleboro home turf, forty-two miles west, to chip-on-its-shoulder, blue collar Bennington.

In Wilmington, VT, Gunther encounters the lifeless body of Michelle Fisher. Her corpse, pale and seemingly at peace, offers him no clues about who she was or how she died. There are no signs of violence, no disorder. Snapshots and postcards show a woman who laughed hard and lived harder.

Michelangelo’s Ghost is the first book I’ve read from Gigi Pandian’s Jaya Jones Treasure Hunt Mystery Series. Jaya is an engaging protagonist with lots of spirit, eclectic tastes, and passion. She has two love interests in this volume, but the mystery takes center stage. After the death of her former professor, Jaya is off to Italy chasing ghosts, centuries-old rumors, and a priceless treasure.

I did see some of the twists coming ahead of time, but they were still well-executed and kept me engaged throughout. I had no trouble reading it as a standalone mystery even though it’s my first dip into the series.

I’m not crazy, Jaya. I’m not. This time, the ghost is real.
