*12 Steps To An Altered State of consciousness*

I like ritual. When I’m sitting down to write I follow a fairly standard series of steps that have proven, time and again, to drive me into an altered slightly-less-than-Shaman-like level of consciousness. It’s one of the reasons I come up with truly engaging, mind-blowing stories that affect people in such a profound way. It’s why I’m famous. Here are the 12 steps so that you can - at least attempt - to do the same.

1.Thirty minutes meditation.
2. Write a list of three writing/editing/marketing tasks I’d like to get done.
3. Make a massive Bullet Proof Coffee (my version - two scoops in a French press, blended with 100 grams of butter, two tablespoons MCT oil, 100 mls cream)
4. Walk down the hall holding my fist in the air, like a gladiator entering a coliseum. Save my most aggressive facial expression for moment I enter the writing room.
5. Sit down in front of the computer. Drink the 500mls of coffee all at once.
6. Read over a page of yesterday's writing and hate myself for a minute.
7. Put headphones on and bring up my Some Kind of Superstar playlist which, among other classics, includes high energy hits like ‘Pictures’ by @sneakysoundsystem 'Gypsy Woman’ by @crystalwaters and ‘Hung Up’ by Madonna.
8. Adjust the position of my writing God figurines – Amazon Woman and The Dude. Touch their feathers.
9. Set my timer for whatever time I have available (usually two hours).
10. Have a hit of nicotine – either a spray or a lozenge (I’ve never been a smoker).
11. Fucking have at it until the timer buzzes me back into the real world.
12. Before leaving the room I turn, bow to the room and confirm it as a sacred place. I thank the Gods, my people, and the Universe for making it all possible.

Let me know how you go.

Book Review: And You May Find Yourself

Book Review: And You May Find Yourself

This is a moving and engaging book with moments of hilarity and a real ability to engage. I thought about this book throughout the day and looked forward to getting back to it at night. I lost hours of sleep because it was so hard to put it down. It’s atmospheric and I haven’t felt so engaged with a book for a long time.

Anaïs Nin
“Henry's recollections of the past, in contrast to Proust, are done while in movement. He may remember his first wife while making love to a whore, or he may remember his very first love while walking the streets, traveling to see a friend; and life does not stop while he remembers. Analysis in movement. No static vivisection. Henry's daily and continuous flow of life, his sexual activity, his talks with everyone, his cafe life, his conversations with people in the street, which I once considered an interruption to writing, I now believe to be a quality which distinguishes him from other writers. He never writes in cold blood: he is always writing in white heat.
It is what I do with the journal, carrying it everywhere, writing on cafe tables while waiting for a friend, on the train, on the bus, in waiting rooms at the station, while my hair is washed, at the Sorbonne when the lectures get tedious, on journeys, trips, almost while people are talking.
It is while cooking, gardening, walking, or love-making that I remember my childhood, and not while reading Freud's 'Preface to a Little Girl's Journal.”
