Johnny Weir

I thought Johnny Weir was great last night as well, and don't fully understand why he didn't get more points. He charmed. Plushenko simply didn't have the consummate skill of Lysacek. Plushenko looked clumsy in comparison -- an athlete, yes, but not a great ice dancer.

Ramses the Damned.

"Desperately searching for the hardcover to 'Ramses the Damned.'" There is none in America. Only in England. Ramses was a paperback original published by Ballantine, my paperback publisher. No Knopf edition. No hardcover. But the British hardcover is out there.

Precious

I'm sitting here thinking about how much I enjoyed these three films: Precious, The Stoning of Soraya M., and The Blind Side. All three transcended film in their messages, yet were solidly made good films. All three reminded me of what I need to know every day of my life, that people are basically good and that people do wonderful things for one another. The Devil is always losing.

more SKYPE

We did another SKPE conference yesterday with philosophy students at a university. I loved discussing the philosophy in my books with them, "face to face." We have a lovely little studio in the garage for these conferences, thanks to my genius assistant, who handles the computers and cameras. I am blessed to have him.

a gorgeous day

It's a gorgeous day here in the desert. I should go out for a walk, and talk to the airy pepper trees, and the exploding bouganvilla. But right now, I'm answering emails from young writers, trying to encourage as always. It takes nerve and courage to be a writer, but it's worth it.

UFOs

I thought most people simply didn't believe that UFOs were alien space ships, etc. But now I see many many believe this. But how does this belief affect your daily life? Does it have any impact at all on your behavior?

Catholic attacks

Some Catholics on this site have aggressively criticized me for reporting on the pedophilia scandal in the church. What is their thinking? I'm confused. I feel concerned Catholics should speak up in defense of the victims of clergy abuse, and publicly demand that their church cleanse itself.

Good Friday

On this solemn Good Friday, I would like to say -- as a loyal Catholic -- to all the victims of clergy abuse: I am sorry. I am sorry for what happened to you. My heart goes out to you. I apologize to you. May our Church, the world over, cleanse itself and reform itself, in response to your witness.

earthquake

For those of you who've never felt a quake, it is the weirdest feeling in the world. People become badly upset; they reach out for one another. Here, we gathered, before it was even over. It's the earth talking to you; it's mortality whispering in your ear.

Weather

Weather is becoming ever more a mystery. It's chilly this morning in the California desert. There is snow on the nearby mountains. I can't recall it ever being this cold in late April. How bizarre.
