How do you go about obtaining the "necessary publishing rights" to your work, so that it doesn't have to be in the "public domain"?

I'm starting a new teen/y.a. novel called "Heads, We Make Out... Tails, We Kill Each Other". It's about four high schoolers: an overweight Goth girl, her gay brother, a disabled and very bipolar girl, and a scrawny kid with religious parents.
