Afternoon Laugh

Note: unofficial play structure format

Setting:

In a small city close to a village, a young man named, Rahim, (wearing a pant and undershirt with a visible torn, large hole) sits on the curb on a sidewalk. His bare feet rest on the ground of the street. There are people walking, vendors, and stalls. There are buildings, streetlights, and open stores. The street is only a two lane road, but the traffic is not crazy fast. There's a person with a bull cart. Rickshaws, baby taxis, other cars, trucks, vans, and some honking. Rahim is staring up.

Aunty K: (passes by from the left on the sidewalk) What are you doing all day, Rahim?!

Rahim: Staring at the blue sky.

Aunty K: (face flustered) What kind of talk is that??!!

Get up, get up, and go find a job! Make some money! (walks off annoyed)

Rahim pulls out a packet of chanachoor and starts snacking.

Uncle B: (walks from the right) Rahim, what are you looking at?! Sitting in the dirt and rubbish??!!

Rahim: Looking at the clear sky while eating chanachoor, Uncle.

Uncle B: What crazy talk is this? Are you a crazy person? Do something useful! (walks away with loud feet stomping)

Rahim shrugs his shoulders and keeps snacking and looking up. He smiles, keeps snacking, smiles, keeps snacking, and continues this loop. A rickshaw/baby taxi stops. A young couple steps out. They hold hands.

Couple girl: (she looks at Rahim and puzzles) Find something amusing?

Couple boy: Yes.

Rahim: I was thinking of mixing some fried onions with my chanachoor would be fantastic, while looking at the big sky.

Couple girl: Are you insane?!

Couple boy: Be proactive man.

Rahim: Mixing chanachoor with fried onions is genius! Very proactive!

Couple boy: Are you insulting us?

Rahim: I'll tell your relatives you are in a sweet relationship. Go!

The couple alarmed and anxious looks at each other like a lightning bolt has struck them! They immediately dropped hands and walk away from each other in the opposite direction.

Rahim: Proactive. (he says to the audience and starts eating again)

Male friend A walks from the left. He is munching on a packet of fried peanuts. He bumps into Rahim without noticing him.

Male friend A: Rahim! What are you doing sitting on the street?!

Rahim: I was sitting on the curb staring at the wide, brilliant sky!

Male friend A: Is that even an answer?!

Rahim: Hey! I am pierced by brilliance like a sewing needle! Let's mix my chanachoor with your fried peanuts. We can chat and eat!

Male Friend A: I have better things to do than waste my time! (he snaps his fingers and leaves)

Big Mom walks from the right. She notices her nephew Rahim and walks fast and almost slaps him with her purse but stops herself.

Big Mom: Rahim again?!! I'll tell your mother.

Rahim: Oh yeah, Big Mom. (stares at her)

Big Mom: What?

Rahim: Ammu says the clothing, jewelry, and perfume arrived. She says to pick up your half.

Big Mom: Let me call my sister. (She pulls out her cellphone/smart phone and dials. She has forgotten about Rahim and leaves.)

Rahim puts away the chanachoor into his pocket and brushes his hands together to wipe off the chanachoor crumbs. Girl C pulls a red child's wagon with her little brother/sister riding in it. Girl C comes from the left.

Girl C: Rahim, is your head full of clouds? You should find a dream and work hard to make your dream true. That's how you shape meaning in your life!

Rahim: But there's no cloud in the sky.

Girl C: (she departs) Ma go ma!

Girl C's little sibling sitting in the wagon: Ma go ma!

Rahim rubs his kneecaps. Male friend D rides a bicycle on the street.

Rahim: Hi, dosto.

Male friend C: Rahim, you need to make better use of your time.

Rahim: Join me! We'll stare at the sky all day.

Male friend D: You'll get me in trouble again! (he rides off with a gusto and rings his bike bell)

Rahim's Cousin E and Cousin F holding a big jilapi surprise him by screaming loud.

Rahim: AHHhhh! (jumps up standing and his cousins are laughing)

Cousin F: Great running into! Share some fresh jilapi with us!

Rahim: No, brothers. I have to get back to my study for the entrance exam in Dhaka. If I don't score well, I won't get into college! Next time, promise. (he waves to them and leaves the stage)

Cousin E and Cousin F shrug their shoulders and sit down on the curb. Cousin E rips a piece of the jilapi and shares it with Cousin F. They both take a happy bite. The curtain closes.

The End
