Dapitan, Rizal's place of exile from 1892-1896, is kept clean by those who venerate him as National Hero and God. I spotted them once strolling about in Old Testament attire and they were kind enough to pose with me for a souvenir photo. Was flattered that some of them knew me from my book "Rizal Without the Overcoat."

Last year Dapitan City erected an imposing gilded tableau commemorating Rizal's arrival in his place of exile in 1892, but after spending Peoples Money to erect a monument on Public land, the people for whom this was built cannot get too close :) In Manila the Rizal Monument built from public subscription and erected on public land requires permission from Park authorities if you use anything larger or complicated than a point-and-shoot camera.

"Si Gahinlalaki" is Rizal's translation of Hans Christian Andersen's "Thumbelina." Five tales were translated into Tagalog and illustrated with delightful drawings for Rizal's nephews and nieces. What is significant is that he worked on this when he was writing the Noli me tangere proof that he wrote not only for adults but for children as well.

The old University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts used to be in a grand house on a street once known as Calle San Sebastian because of the landmark San Sebastian Church that stood on the Tanduay side of this long street. Rizal and Bonifacio as students | Inquirer Opinion

Public school elementary and high school students returned to their classrooms last week while college students, on the other hand, enjoyed two three-day weekends before finally hitting the books this week. People have forgotten than the "Muni" golf course outside the walls of Intramuros is short for "MUNI-cipal" they also forget that this well=preserved structure, the Fortin de San Pedro, was a storage facility for gunpowder built separate from the city to avoid accident and fire.

Many people overlook this ancient piece of wood displayed in San Agustin. It must have come from a larger piece of furniture. When you look closely at what appears to be a battle scene you will see something odd. What is it?
