After Jose Rizal's remains were dug up from Paco Cemetery in 1898 these were placed in this ornate box kept in the Rizal home in Binondo. The box and the remains now lie at the base of the Rizal Monument in Luneta. Next time you have a souvenir photo taken there remember it is both a monument AND a tomb, the grave of the National Hero.

150 years since Jose Rizal's birth, half a century since the nation celebrated his birth centennial in a grand way in 1961 (and his death centennial in 1996) one would think that we would know all that we should know about Rizal by now. The many papers delivered at different conferences here and...

Sic transit gloria mundi (the glory of the world is fleeting) is best exemplified by the grave of "His Excellency" Pedro Alejandro Paterno (1857-1911) who was celebrated in his lifetime but reviled in nationalist history. A kalachuchi tree growing on his plot in the Cementerio del Norte elbowed his grave now tilting with one side broken. I wonder if the remains of one of the greatest balimbings in Philippine history are still intact.

This is Jose Ma. Basa's ornate resting place in Manila North Cemetery. When his remains were translated from Hongkong to Manila an elaborate funeral was held with "Aloha Oe" playing in the background.

Jose Ma. Basa (1839-1907) was more than a friend and supporter of Rizal. He settled in Hongkong after the execution of Gomburza in 1872 and from there provided moral and financial support to the reform movement and other causes. His remains are now buried in the Manila North Cemetery.
