Misbegotten by Cole Knightly
David Keegan (AKA ‘DavidScreamsLikeAGirl’) is a famous horror video gamer on the world’s largest video-sharing website. He makes great money doing something he loves, and his fans can’t get enough of his girly, over-dramatic screaming. One night, a mysterious fan gives him a bootleg copy of a game called Misbegotten. All of his viewers insist he play, but the clawed, ghostly antagonist David calls ‘the witch’ makes the whole endeavor terrifying. Even when he stops playing the game, she haunts him… Awake, asleep, the witch doesn’t care. All David can think about is the reoccurring message: “She will kill you.” Continuing the game could mean the end of his sanity, but stopping could mean the end of his life.
**Misbegotten is a novelette of 10,500 words (or 38 pages).**

THE TRANSLATORS ARE HERE…
As with a lot of my work, especially the longer books, the ideas for them take years to finally gel in my head to the point where I’m ready to write them down. My latest novel was no exception. It’s been years in the making. Maybe even a decade. That’s okay, though, it’s just the way I tend to work. Very few ideas just blaze across my mind and make me dash for the keyboard to start typing. It’s more like a collection of (sometimes) completely random thoughts and images colliding together over time to finally become a cohesive idea. Once I finally have it, though, I’m usually off to the races.
Usually.
The Translators threw me a bit of a curveball this time. I thought it was a smaller story than it actually was, and I was convinced I could write it (and write it properly) as a novella length piece of work. So that’s what I did. Back in 2005, I was asked to take part in a four author novella collection alongside Brian Keene, Tim Lebbon, and Michael Laimo. This was a huge deal for me and I was pretty pumped to be published alongside those guys. They were all friends of mine but they were all far more established than I was, so this was something I saw as a way of getting my name out to their legions of fans. And I had my idea all set to go. Or at least thought I did.
The novella was supposed to be no more than 25,000 words. With four authors, that would make a 100,000 word collection, which was a fairly standard length for a book back then. I went to work and churned out a tale that I eventually ended up calling LOST IN TRANSLATION. I thought it was pretty good. Really strange stuff, for sure, but probably the most imaginative thing I’d ever written. The problem was I had so many things in my head that I wanted to add to the story, but kept having to forget about because what I had written was already close to 40,000 words. For you math wiz’s out there, that’s a bigger number than the 25,000 word limit I had been given. So I did what all writers do, I reluctantly started chopping and editing and carving my story to the bone but I still only managed to get it down to about 29,000 words.
Then fate stepped in and the publisher we were all under contract with was forced to close their doors and we amicably went on our way, free to do what we pleased with each of our novellas. I’ll be honest with you; I was heartbroken over this. I REALLY wanted to be published alongside those other guys and hoped their fans would like my story enough to come searching for my other work. Wasn’t meant to be, though, so I moved on and eventually found a small press called NYX BOOKS who were willing to release my novella.
LOST IN TRANSLATION was published in January 2007. The final word count for the novella was just shy of 30,000, I think, but I still thought it was some of my very best work. It had some really freaky cool artwork too. Here, have a look…
The book received a few decent reviews and the people who have read it seemed to really like it. The trouble is, I highly doubt that more than 50 people world-wide ever read the damn thing. That was more my fault than anything, I think. As soon as it was published I regretted it. I never really even tried to promote the book or get people to notice it. In fact, I went out of my way to NOT talk about it. I knew in my heart I hadn’t told the story right; not the way I wanted to anyway. The story in my head was so much bigger and more epic than I could ever fit inside the novella I had written, and there were so many more scenes and characters I wanted to involve in the storyline. So… over the past several years, slowly but surely, I’ve been working on the book, expanding it in all directions until I had it exactly the way I wanted it.
And now, retitled and expanded into a 90,000 word full-length novel, THE TRANSLATORS is finally ready to launch…
As you can see, we went with more of a thriller type cover. I wanted it to scream ‘action‘ and ‘adventure‘ and ‘holy crap, what the hell is going on?‘ and I think my publisher and I were successful with that. Make no mistake, this is still very much a horror novel, but it is also a science fiction, dark fantasy, and mystery novel too. If I was forced to sum the book up in a few genre words I’d call it an Apocalyptic Thriller.
You may have noticed I haven’t really said a whole lot about what the book is actually about. Ha! That’s because it’s a secret. I think the less you know about this book the more it will surprise you. Perhaps even shock you. Okay… okay, I’ll give you a hint. I’ll give you the back cover text but even that won’t help you much.
THE END OF THE WORLD IS NEAR
Meet John Taylor, a man plagued by phantom voices – or translators, as he calls them – that have shared his head ever since he was abducted as a 10 year old boy. On that fateful day John lost not only his father and his childhood innocence, but perhaps something even more important – his very soul.
THE INVASION IS FINALLY COMING
Most people think John is crazy. He’s not. The doctors think he’s Schizophrenic. He’s not. The government thinks he might just be humanity’s last flicker of hope, but unfortunately he’s not that either. What he is is something no one – including himself – could ever have imagined…
Well, there you have it, and that’s all you’re getting out of me. If you want to know more, you’ll have to buy the book. The Translators is available in trade paperback, and at all eBook retailers such as Kindle, Nook, and tomorrow Kobo, and Apple. Please go get yourself a copy or two and make sure you tell your family and friends.
The Translators are coming… are you ready???

German Translation deal with MKrug Verlag
Hi gang,
It’s been a whirlwind of a summer that has flashed by me almost before I realized it had begun. I ended up working a lot of it out in western Canada, but I’m back in Ontario again and ready to start what I hope will be a very successful Fall, publishing-wise. I’ve got several new books and projects lined up for you over the next several months but you’ll have to wait a little while longer to hear about all of those.
For now, I’m beyond thrilled to let you know I’ve just signed a six book publishing contract with MKrug Verlag, giving them the foreign language rights to translate and release a large portion of my catalogue of books into German over the next several years. Michael Krug, the publisher and translator of the books, has worked with me in the past, bringing my novel THE JIGSAW MAN to the German readers under the title of AMPUTIERT. He was the editor for that book and although I wasn’t able to read the prose myself, I’ve been told by numerous fans and reviewers that his translation was excellent.
Michael also translates and publishes books by other well know dark fiction authors such as David Moody, Brian Keene, Michael Oliveri, and Jeff Strand. It’s truly an honor for me to be published alongside those great writers.
Amputiert caused quite a stir overseas and in the years since I’ve had many readers and fans asking me when my next book would be available to them in the German language. Unfortunately I didn’t really have an answer for them, seeing as the original deal had been struck while my book rights were tied up with Dorchester Publishing in New York City. Although I’d written the books, the foreign rights decisions were controlled by my mass market publisher. I’d still get my cut of the sales but I had no direct control over them. Once Leisure Books folded up though, and my rights were returned to me in full, I was once again allowed to seek a publisher willing to give some of my other books a try.
As luck would have it, Michael was just in the process of starting up his very own publishing company, and actually came looking for me to see if my books were still available. I was obviously thrilled to work with Michael again, and I’m even happier now to report to all my German fans that they will be able to read my work for many years to come. This six book deal is just a starting point, hopefully, and as long as sales are decent and both sides are happy, I see no reason why this partnership won’t continue long term. For now though, we have ironed out a deal that will see the following books translated and published:
The Jigsaw Man (Re-Release)
Valley of the Scarecrow
Strange Magic
Crimson
The Translators (Unpublished, Original Novel)
An Untitled Short Story Collection
There is no set in stone timeframe for these books to be released (especially since Michael still has to translate them in German) but we will be starting the process this fall, most likely in October 2013, with the re-release of AMPUTIERT. I have the rights back and Michael completed the translation years ago so it is the perfect book to launch this new partnership with.
I’m told Michael will be releasing it with a different cover than the original book had, which is terrific news. The first cover was fine, don’t get me wrong, but this new cover will be far more nastier and better suited to the contents of the novel. As soon as I have the cover, I’ll post it and let everyone have a look. For now, you’ll have to make do with checking out the MKrug Verlag website. It’s still under construction a little but I think you will get an idea why I’ve been feeling so excited about all of this.
To all my German fans out there, I hope you will help me spread the word about this news, and when the time comes help support me by picking up a copy or three of each of my titles. I’ll be sure to let you (and everyone else) know as things progress but my understanding so far is that there will be paperback as well as ebook versions of all the titles. Hope you are looking forward to them as much as I am!
All my best,
And thank you. Or should I say…Danke schön!

New Release! Only the Thunder Knows
My new novella, Only the Thunder Knows has been released from JournalStone.
This is the first book in a series JournalStone is calling its DoubleDown Series. You will also get Rena Mason‘s terrific novella, EAST END GIRLS included with it. If you remember the old school paperback flip books you’ll know what I’m talking about. Each title has it’s own great cover and you read in toward the middle of the book. Once you finish one story, you flip the book over and start reading the other story.
Check it out, I had a great time writing this one.
William (Billy) Burke and William Hare were two real-life, beer-swilling, fist-fighting lowlifes who managed to stumble their way into infamy in Edinburgh, Scotland in the late 1820′s. Step by step, they graduated from the unemployment line to petty thievery, to grave robbing, and then on to cold bloody murder – ultimately becoming Britain’s first documented serial killers. What history doesn’t know about, or consider is the possibility that Burke and Hare may not have been acting on their own; and the blame for those heinous crimes might not entirely be theirs. Two mysterious strangers have arrived in the city – an old sculptor and a stunningly beautiful actress – both of which use their money and influence to manipulate the young Irishmen into searching for an ancient artifact rumored to have the awesome power of Heaven and Hell combined.
You can grab it at the following:
Kindle
Paperback at Amazon
Nook

Short Story Sale!
For a limited time you can snag my first two short story collections: Gods & Monsters and Time & Space at the bargain price of only 99 cents each! My publisher and I have decided to have a quick sale on them as we near completion of the final short story volume: Flesh & Blood.
The sale will be on all platforms, some may take longer to update than others but please do check it out and see if it interests you!
Here are the descriptions for both:
Gods & Monsters Vol. 1
Since storytellers first put pen to paper, religious dogma and spiritual beliefs have always played key roles in the various genres of dark fiction. Humanity’s obsession with mortality and what might or might not happen after our inevitable deaths has long been tantalizing fodder for authors and dreamers alike.
REGARDLESS OF OUR FAITH, EVERYONE FEARS DEATH…
Now collected together for the first time ever, acclaimed horror and fantasy author Gord Rollo shares his own dark visions about the cruel gods and vicious monsters that wander his imagination and keep him awake at night. Grab your bible, your crucifix, your holy water, and whatever else makes you feel comforted and safe – you just might need them. Within this volume you’ll find stories of shattered faith, drowned hopes, haunted spirits, fallen angels, and the paralyzing fear of the unknown abyss that awaits us all after we’ve taken our final breath…
Special content: This collection includes Story Notes on each individual story from the author as well as an Introduction.
Gods & Monsters features the following short stories:
– Divine Intervention
– Chamber of the Gods (Co-written with Brett Savory)
– Chopper’s Hands
– Love; In Pieces
– Breath of an Angel/Touch of the Devil (Co-written with Gene O’Neill)
– The Last Straw
– Moving Pictures
– The Face of an Unlikely God
Time & Space Vol. 2
They say time can heal all wounds, but we all know that isn’t necessarily true. Throughout history, storytellers have looked to our ancestors tragic past and hypothesized about humanity’s bleak future as ways to try and explain or contemplate the myriad problems we face today.
PAST OR FUTURE, FEAR IS THE TIE THAT BINDS…
Now collected together for the first time ever, acclaimed horror and fantasy author Gord Rollo shares his own dark visions about outer – as well as inner – space and the way the cruel hand of time ravages our youthful looks, not to mention all our hopes and dreams. Within this volume you’ll find stories of past historical horrors and apocalyptic futures, of haunted memories and twisted obsessions, of the beginning of insanity and the inevitable end of everything…
Special content: This collection includes Story Notes on each individual story from the author as well as an Introduction.
Time & Space features the following short stories:
– Timothy Meek
– Marcela Transmuting (Co-written with Gene O’Neill)
– All That Glitters
– Unnatural Selection
– The Suicide Man

With a wave of my hand…POOF…another FREE promotion appears!
Hi Folks!
It’s May now and up here in Canada the weather is still cold and rainy. Hopefully the real spring shows up in a hurry, but in the meantime I wanted to let everyone know that I will be giving away another novel absolutely FREE!
Starting this Thursday, May 16th until Sunday May 19th, the ebook version of my full length novel STRANGE MAGIC will be available for FREE over on Amazon.com. I’ve had surprisingly great luck with giving my books away for free so I’ll continue to do it from time to time. I will say now though that this will be the last one for the next while as I’ve got some brand new novellas and the final short story collection that will be coming out soon. If by chance you know anyone that you could recommend this book to, feel free! The more the merrier, I say.
Strange Magic is a book I like a lot. I’ve always been a fan of magic and I’ve wanted to write about magicians ever since I first began telling stories back in the stone age of my youth. It’s the story of Wilson Kemp, a man who’s living a lie in the fictional town of Billington, Pennsylvania. He’s a man of many talents and even more secrets but I’ve already written about the plot and how I came up with the idea for this novel in another post on this site (check it out if you haven’t already) so I won’t rehash all that again. What I will say is that I take a lot of pride in my plotting and in creating suspenseful fiction and this novel is the book I think I’m happiest with plot-wise and suspense-wise. I still love the way the second half of this novel comes together and the shocks I have in store for all you horror hounds. Here’s hoping you like it as much as I do. There’s even an original, unpublished short story added into the back of the book as a bonus. It’s called EVERY MAGICIAN HAS TO START SOMEWHERE and I think you’ll find it’s a nasty little story well worth reading.
Come Thursday, pick up a copy over on Amazon and please let your friends, families, neighbors, workmates, and mortal enemies know about this promotion. All I ask is you try to write me a review on Amazon or Goodreads and/or consider picking up some other book of mine to help me pay the bills. Thanks again for all your support and encouragement over the years. You know it means the world to me!
Cheers!
Gord

Only the Thunder Knows – Pre-Order Now!
I’ve also got another novella coming out in June this time from JournalStone. It’s called Only the Thunder Knows.
JournalStone’s DoubleDown series was modeled after the old Ace’s Doubles. The idea was to pair a seasoned author with an up and coming talent. One book, two novellas, two authors and two covers. You literally would end up with two books in one by flipping the book over and starting from the back. Very cool.
Here’s the description:
William (Billy) Burke and William Hare were two real-life, beer-swilling, fist-fighting lowlifes who managed to stumble their way into infamy in Edinburgh, Scotland in the late 1820’s. Step by step, they graduated from the unemployment line to petty thievery, to grave robbing, and then on to cold bloody murder – ultimately becoming Britain’s first documented serial killers.

The Crucifixion Experiments – Pre-Order Deluxe HC Now!
I’ve got a new novella set to come out from Dark Regions Press titled The Crucifixion Experiments in June/July of this year. Currently they’ve got a pre-order page set up over at their website. The deluxe hardcover version is limited to just 26 signed and numbered editions. It will initially be available as the deluxe version but then a trade paperback version will be made available as a doublepack with Gene O’Neill’s The Blue Heron.
Here’s the description:
Jake Mercer’s life is spiraling out of control. As a criminal profiler and one of the senior homicide investigators in the Oakland Police Department, he’s spent the last twenty-five years getting into the heads of killers trying to understand the way they think. He’s the best at what he does but constantly playing in the minds of madmen carries a heavy price, leaving Jake an out of shape, alcoholic loner suspended from active duty.
The murders have started.
Another serial killer is prowling the streets now, a lunatic who’s making a game of nailing retired Catholic priests to trees and bridges and hydro poles around the city. Torture and murder isn’t enough, they’re experimenting with the bodies to further whatever diabolical plan only they seem to know.
The experiments have begun.
Broken down or not, Lieutenant Mercer might be the only man who can catch this killer before the city starts to panic. Back on duty and trying his best to stay out of the bottle, Jake finds himself teamed up with two rookie detectives in what will be his most difficult case ever, and possibly his last…
You can find out more and pre-order a copy for yourself over at the publisher’s website.

The Scarecrow Will Walk at Midnight…
Hello everyone. Hope this post finds you happy, healthy, and enjoying all that the Spring season has to offer. It’s been a long cold Winter here in the Great White North and personally, I’m glad to be rid of it. There is just something about the Blue skies and warmer weather that always makes me smile. Makes me want to read a good book too!
On that note, I’m excited to be running another book promotion this weekend. Last month’s JIGSAW MAN promotion was a huge success — exposure-wise as well as sales-wise — and I’m hoping that with your help we can try to capture some of that magic once again. Starting right now and running until Sunday April 21, my full length horror novel VALLEY OF THE SCARECROW will be reduced down to the insanely low price of just 99 cents for the Ebook version. It will be available at most online bookstores, including:
Amazon
Amazon UK
Amazon.ca
Kobo
Apple
Smashwords
This book is my homage to all those great horror/slasher movies that came out in the 1980s,, the movies I grew up watching and loving. If you are a fan of the classic slasher/monster movies, I’m sure that you will love this book as well.
Here’s a little tease from the book’s cover description:
Gord Rollo’s chilling homage to horror/slasher films!
During the great depression, a small backwoods community in Iowa face even more difficult times than most, having to endure the slowly fading sanity of their leader, Reverend Joshua Miller. When it is clear the man has slipped beyond the edge of reason and perhaps signed a deal with the devil, the citizens unite to stop him any way they can, breaking into the church to lash the reverend to his wooden alter cross then boarding up the windows and doors to leave him to fate and God’s judgment. The people of Oak Valley then abandoned their town to the cornfields and woods; ending the madness for what they hoped was forever.
They were wrong!
Seventy-four years later, the corn and trees have taken back the area and not much is left of the once thriving little community but Joshua Miller’s desecrated church still stands, and within its boarded up and sun-baked walls something that used to be a holy man waits for whoever is unfortunate enough to release him from his cross…
THE SCARECROW WILL WALK AT MIDNIGHT…
The book also includes a FREE bonus short story about Reverend Miller that is a prequel to the events that take place in the novel. It’s called THE LAST STRAW and is one of my personal favorite short stories, it’s worth more that the 99 cents all on its own! Here’s hoping you give the book a chance and help me spread the word. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Every author needs a great street team so if you can talk about the promotion to your friends, post about it on Facebook, Twitter, your own blog/websites, any message boards you frequent, or anything else you can think of, I’d be thrilled. A million thanks in advance!
While I have you here though, I thought some of you might be interested in hearing how I came up with the idea for this novel. I know I’m always interested in hearing an author’s thoughts on his books and stories, so here goes…
Valley Of The Scarecrow came about sort of by accident to be honest. I was at a horror convention in Baltimore, Maryland years ago and ended up having a drink with a film executive from Dimension Films. We were discussing horror movies, of course, and I asked him (I’ll keep him nameless just because I haven’t asked his permission to post his name) what kind of script he would love to see come across his desk. He told me he’d love to see a good Scarecrow story come his way. He loved them and thought most of the movies that had ever been filmed about them were fairly bad or too cheesy. We agreed that the scariest part of the Jeepers Creepers franchise was when the Creeper was PRETENDING to be a scarecrow at the start of the second movie. If that was so cool, what would a good movie about a REAL scarecrow be like?
Not wanting to lose his interest, I told a little fib (okay, I blatantly lied) that I had been working on just such a film script. I told him I had always seen scarecrows as evil parodies of Jesus on the cross and said my scarecrow would have a religious background to add weight to the character and make him even creepier. I even came up with the title (Valley Of The Scarecrow) on the spot and we talked about how cool the movie trailer/poster would look and sound when it said:
Yea thou you walk through the valley of the scarecrow,
you SHALL fear his evil…
Anyway, once I got home from the convention (and sobered up) I realized I had a pretty damn good idea in my head for this scarecrow project and I started to write it up as a movie script. That project kind of petered out as Dimension Films was bought out and my movie executive friend moved on to another career but I never forgot about the idea. Flash forward a few years and I had my book deal with Leisure Books in New York and when I was asked what my idea was for my fourth book (after I’d handed in STRANGE MAGIC) I just blurted out “Hey, I have this pretty cool idea for a novel about an evil preacher who becomes a real flesh and blood scarecrow.” My editor loved the idea so off I went to write the novel.
It was never really intended to be a book, and when you read it you will see how it basically reads like the movie script it was supposed to be. I like that about it though. It’s different than my other books – more raw and stripped down to the essentials, like a movie would be. And hey, I’ve had lots of interest in turning this one into a film so if all goes well, Reverend Miller may yet make it to the big screen. My fingers are certainly crossed for that to happen. In fact, I honestly think this book and this character has real potential for a string of books and movies. We’ve all heard about Freddy and Michael and Jason and Pinhead but they are all getting a little long in the tooth. Perhaps it’s time for a new legend to be unleashed. Give Valley Of The Scarecrow a read and let me know what you think?
Cheers!
