Paperback Promotion and Ebook Giveaway
Hi Folks,
March is upon us and that (thankfully) means Spring is on the way. Not sure where you live but here in the Great White North it has been cold and crappy and I’ve had enough of shoveling the driveway for another year, thank you very much.
Anyway, in the spirit of the changing season I thought it might be a grand idea to have a huge promotion for all you cool cats out there. I want to show my appreciation to all of you who read my work and follow my Facebook/Twitter/blog posts but I also want to kick things into high gear and start moving some books this year. I’ll let you in on a secret; I have a dream of writing full time and supporting my family with my imagination and although I’m not complaining, I need to start getting my books into the hands of more readers to make that happen. I love all you guys and gals but it’s the people out there that have never heard of me that I really need to start getting my name in front of. Hence, this big promotion.
Save 20% Right Now
First off, let’s talk about the paperback promotion. Starting March 1st, for five full days, you can use a special promotional code to get a 20% discount on any and all of my books published through EnemyOne. So far, that list of books includes:
CROWLEY’S WINDOW
PEELER
VALLEY OF THE SCARECROW
THE JIGSAW MAN
STRANGE MAGIC
GODS & MONSTERS – STORY COLLECTION VOL. 1
TIME & SPACE – STORY COLLECTION VOL. 2
All you have to do is head over to Createspace and punch in the promotion code (YMX86XTE) and you will get the discount immediately on everything you order. I’ve tried to keep my paperback books priced fairly low to start with so I’m hoping a lot of you will take advantage of this opportunity to get your hands on a few of the books of mine you might not have. It’s a great time to buy a book for a friend or family member as well. I’m still a huge fan of paperback books and I hope we can keep them alive forever. Ebooks are great but hopefully you agree it’s still so cool to hold a real paperback book in your hands.
Nothing Beats Free
Also starting March 1st, for five full days, I will be giving away FREE ebook copies of what many readers consider my best full length novel: THE JIGSAW MAN. For a while I balked at giving this book away from free, thinking this was the book that might make a lot of money, but the more I think it through, the more I realize that if I can get this book into new reader’s hands then I can potentially really expand my fan base. I’m going to need all of your help of course, spreading the word far and wide to anyone you think might enjoy it.
For those of you who may not know, THE JIGSAW MAN is the story of a homeless man on the verge of suicide who is offered two million dollars to volunteer in an unusual experiment. All he has to do is give up his right arm and the money is his. I won’t rehash the plot for you here but I will tell you that it is probably my most personal book to date. It hurt me to write this one that’s precisely why I think it is a powerful read.
I wrote JIGSAW from a very dark place several years after my oldest daughter’s illness. She was born with a fatal liver disease called Biliaria Atresia. It’s a fancy name that means the bile ducts in her liver didn’t form correctly and the corrosive bile inside her couldn’t escape her liver to get into her stomach where it usually helps us digest food. Instead, the bile was eating away her liver and her only chance at life was to have a liver transplant operation. To make a long story short, she spent most of her first year of life at Sick Kid’s Hospital in Toronto and eventually ended up having to have three transplants. She is 17 years old now and doing great, but that first year or two was a nightmare of epic proportions for her and for my wife and I. I don’t want to get into it too much but the main point is that it was awful to sit there day after helpless day, frustrated and mad as hell at the world. That stress and pain can really weigh on a person, and people are trained (especially guys) to internalize their suffering and not let their emotions show. For me, writing is the way I’ve always dealt with things that are hurting or confusing me, so years later when I was ready, I sat down to write a short story about transplants, just to clear my head a little. All the darkness I’d been storing up inside me just started pouring out and I just let it flow. For that reason alone, it’s no surprise to me the book came out very visceral and nasty. It was written by an angry, frustrated father trying to deal with the fear and helplessness of his little girl’s suffering. I’m not angry, mind you, but my pent-up emotions were. I hope that makes some sense.
Hope you enjoy THE JIGSAW MAN and I sincerely hope you can help me get the book into the hands of thousands of readers who have never heard of me. JIGSAW has nothing to do with little girls, or liver transplants, but it has everything to do with that frustration and helplessness that anyone in that situation would feel. I think that is honestly what gives the book its power. I wrote it with real emotions and I think that emotion gets into the book somehow. Gets into the reader too. I know that I still tear up when I read the ending, even all these years later.
You and your friends can find the book here: Amazon. Looking forward to seeing how many people we can get this book into their hands. Anything you can do to help out would be greatly appreciated.
Here’s that PAPERBACK COUPON CODE one last time: YMX86XTE
All my very best,
Gord

STRANGE MAGIC
Here’s hoping everyone had a great Holiday Season and you’re ready to do great things in 2013. I have a whole list of hopes and dreams and plans and schemes but time will tell how far along the list I make it. To kick off the year, I’ll be re-releasing one of my favorite novels, STRANGE MACIC.
Strange Magic is a book that I started over 20 years ago, back when I was in college, but only the first chapter of that old book ever survived. I had been trying to write a dark fantasy book about an evil magician/wizard dude and in the end it was terrible. I loved the first chapter though, so I kept the typewritten pages of that chapter in my drawer until about 2005 or so when I took them out and reread it, this time with an eye toward turning my original idea into a horror novel. Since I was a kid I’d always loved magic and the thrill of watching an escape artist defy death is still something that makes me smile even today. I’ve been to see David Copperfield and Chris Angel do their live shows and was simply blown away by how they could do the things they do right in front of you without you having a clue how they pulled it off. Amazing stuff!
Anyway, I’ve always wanted to write a novel about a magician and seeing as I had that first chapter still laying around about a bad one, it made sense to me to have two magicians. Horror to me is about good and evil, and the struggle between them so it was easy to make the leap of having one good magician and one evil one. That’s a simplified version of how things came about, of course, but that’s where it started. From there I let my muse run wild because although I wanted the book to be about magic and illusion, I didn’t want it to get bogged down in technical things and filled with too many tricks. At it’s heart, I still wanted the book to be about the magician, the person, rather than his magic. For anyone who has read my other books and stories, redemption has always been a key theme in my work, and Wilson Kemp, the alcoholic main character in Strange Magic, is badly in need of some major league redeeming. He’s living a lie in a small town, hiding from something terrible that happened in his past. He’s an alcoholic that has lost his wife and daughter but there is a reason that he lives at the bottom of a vodka bottle. His climb out of the bottle and his fight to win back his wife and daughter are what mattered to me. That’s the message and the strength of the book, in my humble opinion. I’m hoping people will cheer for him. I know I certainly was as I was writing it.
I don’t want to give anything else away about the story, but I will admit that the finished novel is a billion times better than the original fantasy/evil wizard book I started with. I honestly think this book has some of my very best plotting in it. I simply LOVE the way things all come together in the second half of this book. It’s a scary story that I’m really proud of. I hope you enjoy it too.
The novel starts out deep in the dark spooky woods, moves to the heart of small town American, but then heads for someplace much, much darker. Here is a teaser description of the novel for you:
A MAN HIDING FROM A TERRIBLE PAST…
Wilson Kemp is a man living a lie in Billington, Pennsylvania. He’s been in hiding for a long time, running from a dreadful secret that has forced him to change his name, move to this small secluded town and abandon what had once been a stellar career. Once, he’d been a talented escape artist on the brink of fame and fortune, but now he’s a broken down alcoholic scared of his own shadow. Mind you, he has good reason to be scared because his worst fear has finally caught up with him, and the sleepy little town of Billington is about to be declared a war zone.
HIS DARK SECRET ABOUT TO BE REVEALED…
With the aid of a malevolent entity trapped within an old wooden trunk, a stranger from Wilson’s past has hunted him down; an insane fellow magician who will stop at nothing to get his twisted, bloody revenge. To survive, Wilson will have to conquer his own inner demons to fight his old enemy in a battle that will lead to the gates of death and beyond. To live, Wilson will have to accomplish the greatest magic trick of all time: escaping from the dark pit of Hell itself…
Here is the awesome cover Adam Geen has created for the book. We went through half a dozen other potential covers, but in the end I wanted this one. Love how it gives me the creepy, strange feel of the book but also carries on the realistic, haunting feel of my other releases with EnemyOne. What do you think?
As an added bonus, I’ve written a brand new, never before published short story called EVERY MAGICIAN HAS TO START SOMEWHERE that will be included at the back of both the e-book versions of Strange Magic and the paperback. It’s a fun little slice of nastiness about a young magician that I think you’ll like. I had previously written a tie-in novella for Strange Magic called Peeler, which features people from the novel in the story but I loved Peeler so much we’ve released it as a separate book on it’s own, as well as included it in the soon to be released short story collection Vol. 3 called FLESH & BLOOD.
Strange Magic is ready to go. My fabulous publisher Adam Geen has just uploaded the files for the e-book and the book should start appearing on Amazon within a few days. Naturally, the trade paperback version will follow as soon as possible.
All my best.

The Next Big Thing!
There’s a blog chain going around called “The Next Big Thing.” The idea is, each writer answers some questions about their next big project… and lines up more authors to do the same, encouraging people to discover other authors’ books and blogs. My good friend, fellow beer lover, and ex-Dorchester Publishing co-survivor John Everson did one of these last week, and was kind enough to tag me. I’ve tagged four more authors worthy of your support (see the bottom of this blog). So here are my answers:
What is the working title of your book?
I’m going to cheat a little and promote three books instead of one. Don’t worry though, they are actually tied together in that they are my brand new short story collection, which I’m releasing in three volumes.
Vol. 1: GODS & MONSTERS – my religious based horror and dark fantasy.
Vol. 2: TIME & SPACE – my SF, alternate time, and end of the world fiction.
Vol. 3: FLESH & BLOOD – my most hardcore and violent horror stories.
Where did the idea come from for the book?
It was mine. I’ve been in the process of re-releasing all of my backlist titles in both ebook and trade paperback versions through a great new small press called EnemyOne and my editor there, Adam Geen, asked me about my short fiction. We discussed releasing a ‘best of’ sort of thing but I found that I had a larger selection of stories that I really loved than would fit into one book. I was trying to find my favorites when I realized there was really no reason why I had to narrow them down to the ten best or whatever. I could release more than one book. After going through all of my stuff, I saw certain patterns and themes in a lot of my best stories and that is how I came up with the three loosely-themed volumes.
What genre does your book fall under?
That’s the fun part. I tend to write in several genres, sometimes in the same story. I like to think a story should go in whatever direction it needs to go in, regardless if that is toward horror, science fiction, or even fantasy. My novels and longer work tends to stick a bit closer to horror, but my short fiction is a bit all over the place. I actually like that. It keeps writing short stories fun and different for me.
Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
Yikes! Now there’s a tough question. With all these stories to choose from, I don’t think I could make you a list of all the actors and actresses I’d need. How about I pick one story. Let’s choose PEELER, one of my favorites and definitely the most extreme story I’ve ever written. It’s the final story in the FLESH & BLOOD volume. Peeler basically has two main characters. It’s about a young chef at an insane asylum named Randy who is battling some self-abuse issues from his childhood. He ends up learning about an inmate they call Peeler, who is in the process of trying to remove every last inch of skin from his body and he thinks that if he meets this strange man he might be able to understand his own bad urges. In a perfect world, I think I’d have a great actor like Edward Norton play Randy. He’s terrific at quirky, slightly damaged characters and he’d be great at this role. Peeler could be a lot of people, seeing as his skin is mostly gone when you see him for the first time. That said, it would still take a big, intimidating dude to pull it off. I’d choose Mickey Rourke.
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
A three volume eclectic collection gathering the very best of author Gord Rollo’s short fiction.
Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
It is being published by Enemy One Press, a publisher in Southern Ontario that I think is going to make some noise in the next few years. Make sure you check them out at www.enemyone.com when you get a chance.
How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
Ha! About 20 years I suppose. Most of these stories were written in the last 10 years or so but there are some very early gems in these volumes as well. I’d say the stories range for the early 1990′s right up to brand spanking new, never before published stories. I’m excited about all of them!
What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
I think there are a lot of great short story collections out there but I tend to like ones that are a bit strange and unique. I like collections that have longer stories as well as flash fiction and everything in between. Keep me off balance and I will enjoy it. I’d compare it (humbly I might add, as both these writers are personal favorites of mine) to Norman Partridge’s THE MAN WITH THE BARBED-WIRE FISTS, and Brian Keene’s UNHAPPY ENDINGS. Those are the collections I’d like to be compared to anyway.
Who or what inspired you to write this book?
My father has always been the person who inspired me to write and gave me my life long love of books and literature but it’s my writing mentor and friend Gene O’Neill who is always pushing me to stretch my wings as an author and never settle into a rut. Gene is the guy that gets me to explore different genres and cultures and writing using different points of view. He’s also the guy who’ll tell you I still have a lot to learn. And I’d agree with him!
What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
Well, I’m hoping just the prospect of checking out my short fiction will pique readers interest. A fair number of people who read this might have read one or two of my novel or novella length work (and God love them for that!) but seeing as I’ve never have had a short story collection before, there are loads of readers our there who have never read my shorter length work. Now they have three volumes of them to choose from. Here’s hoping they decide to give one, or better yet, all of them a try. The first two volumes have already been released in ebook as well as trade paperback versions, with the third volume set to be released early in the new year.
You can find GODS & MONSTERS right HERE.
You can find TIME & SPACE right HERE.
Well, that’s the end of the questions folks. I hope you’ll give my short story collections a chance and don’t forget to keep an eye out for volume three, FLESH & BLOOD, coming soon. In the meantime, check out the blogs of the other authors I’ve tagged as part of “The Next Big Thing”. They are all excellent writers and good friends who definitely deserve your support. Single Stories…
Hi Folks,
Just a quick post to let you know I’ve decided to start selling a select few of my personal favorite short stories as individual ebook downloads. The main reason I’m doing this actually has less to do with you cool cats who read these posts and already support my work, and more to do with all the people out there in Readerland who have never even heard of me.
These same stories will also be part of the three volume short story collection that I am publishing but the idea is to have several different price levels on Amazon or wherever so that I have a better chance of attracting some new readers. You know yourself that you sometimes stumble across a new book or writer that looks interesting but you don’t feel like shelling out $15.00 on a chance that you might like him/her. My hope though, is that some of those readers out there might consider buying one of my affordable short stories to give me a chance. It’s far easier to get someone to take a flyer on a new writer for 99 cents then it is to ask for the $15.00. I’m hoping it makes the difference between a “sale” and a “no thanks”. Of course, once they try the individual story I’m hoping they like it enough to pick up the whole story collection it came from or buy one of my novels or novellas.
That’s the plan, anyway.
I’ll be honest with you, when I first heard that writers were selling individual short stories I thought it was a bit of a crock. I mean, maybe some longer stories might be fine, but I noticed that even what I’d consider flash fiction was being sold. The worst part, in my humble opinion, is that a lot of these writers don’t even tell their potential fans that it’s just a three page story and I’m sure a lot of people have paid good money for what they thought was a novel or at least a novella.
Now I’m all for making money and I’d love to sell every story I’ve ever written but I also believe in being honest with my readers. I don’t want anyone spending a dime (or in this case, usually 99 cents) of their hard earned cash on something of mine unless I know they are well aware what they are getting in return. That’s why I’ve insisted that my publisher only releases a select few of these stories, personally chosen by me, and label them clearly as SHORT STORY right on the front cover.
Not sure yet exactly how many of these individual story downloads I will release, four or five maybe, but for now I can let you know about the first few that are already uploaded and for sale right now.
TIMOTHY MEEK is a brand new, never published original story that runs about 7500 words long.
It is the year 2039. On January 19th an explosion ripped through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia unleashing a virus killing over 60 million people in just 3 weeks.
Enter Timothy Meek, a loner, and sufferer of Mysophobia (fear of contamination and germs.) Meek believes that the government’s “cure” Project Red is not all it’s cracked up to be. His condition certainly doesn’t help things as he systematically closes himself off from the rest of the world; sealing himself in his apartment using plastic sheets and duct tape.
Now, Meek waits all alone in his apartment; his grip on reality loosening, while the rest of the world waits for the cure. The sky will run red with blood but will the human race survive?
Timothy Meek is a short story that can also be found in the collection Time & Space Vol. 2.
If you’d like to buy a copy, or better yet, buy it for a friend who hasn’t read my work yet, you can download it here:
THE FACE OF AN UNLIKELY GOD is my all time personal favorite story that I’ve written. It may not necessarily BE my best story, but it will always be pretty special to me. It’s even loosely based on a true story that took place in the Ecuadorian Rainforest. This story runs about 10,500 words long.
In 1963, Professor Leonard Harris was on a field expedition to El Oriente and accidentally walked into the middle of a four hundred year old religious war between two prominent tribes in the area. The Huaorani (the forest dwellers) who worshipped the magnificent Jaguar as their most powerful deity, and the Quatuani (the river people) who worshipped the deadly piranha.
One of those tribes believes that the white man just might be the next reincarnation of their most sacred god. The other tribe believes it too, and will stop at nothing to murder the Professor before he can fulfill his dark destiny.
The question is…what does Leonard Harris believe?
And is he really willing to die just to find out?
The Face of an Unlikely God is a short story that can also be found in the collection Gods & Monsters Vol. 1.
You can check this one out and buy it for ten people on your Christmas list here:
That’s it for now. There will a few more individual stories released shortly, including the infamous ultra-hardcore story of mine called PEELER about a man inside of a mental institution obsessed with self mutilation. It’s a beauty, I think you’re going to love it!
Cheers!

Coming Soon
Now that we’ve run into the month of November I thought I’d give you a sneak peek at something that’s going to be coming out later this month. (Not entirely sure of the date just yet.)
So without further ado, the cover and blurb to Time & Space: Short Fiction Collection Vol. 2. Maybe shortly I’ll post a short story that’s included within.
They say time can heal all wounds, but we all know that isn’t necessarily true. Throughout history, storytellers have looked to our ancestors tragic past and hypothesized about humanity’s bleak future as ways to try and explain or contemplate the myriad problems we face today.
PAST OR FUTURE, FEAR IS THE TIE THAT BINDS…
Now collected together for the first time ever, acclaimed horror and fantasy author Gord Rollo shares his own dark visions about outer – as well as inner – space and the way the cruel hand of time ravages our youthful looks, not to mention all our hopes and dreams. Within this volume you’ll find stories of past historical horrors and apocalyptic futures, of haunted memories and twisted obsessions, of the beginning of insanity and the inevitable end of everything…

Halloween Treats…
Hi folks,
I’m writing this on October 25 and my mind is full of Halloween thoughts and memories. October 31st is by far my favorite night of the year and I absolutely love walking around with my kids and seeing everyone dressed up and having fun. Most people just buy store bought costumes for their kids, which is fine, but I get a real thrill out of seeing a boy or girl who has made something themselves. The creative spirit in me soars when I see someone with tin foil wrapped all over them and they claim to be an alien or even the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz. I don’t care if their costume is good or terrible, it means a lot to me to see kids using their imagination and thinking outside the (Wal-mart) box. I love seeing all the work people put into decorating their houses and yards as well. It’s incredible the amount of work some people put into turning their yard in a graveyard or a haunted crypt and that kind of effort really helps set the tone for all the kids on that special night. If I could, I’d cover my entire town in cobwebs and hang blood-drenched bed-sheet ghosts from every tree but alas, not everyone feels the same way about Halloween as I do.
Thank heavens, dear reader, that you and I have similar tastes and mindsets, because I KNOW you love Halloween too and are counting down the days until you can jump out and scare a few teenage kids who should have stopped trick-r-treating years ago. My oldest daughter is 17 years old now and she still plans on heading out for candy with her friends – yikes! Anyway, that’s a story for another day.
Right now, I’d like to talk about what you are reading and enjoying this Halloween season? What book(s) really get your blood pumping at this time of year? For me, October is the time of year I read the most, and I always find that I re-read some of my favorite horror books around now. I’ll give you a list of the “must read” books for me around Halloween and then I’d love to hear what books you enjoy the most too.
My Top 5 Favorite Halloween Reads:
5. ‘Salem’s Lot – Stephen King. Love this book and re-read it every year.
4. Night Chills – Dean Koontz. It’s not Dean’s best book but it creeps me out every time I pick it up.
3. The Animal Hour – Andrew Klavan. This book takes place on Halloween night and it’s terrific.
2. Allhallow’s Eve – Richard Laymon. Richard was a huge influence on me and if you want a Halloween treat, give this book a try.
1. Dark Harvest – Norman Partridge. By far the BEST book you can read on a spooky Halloween night. Buy it right now!
Okay, there is my top five. I could list another 50 probably but lets keep this simple. If you get a minute, I’d love to hear the books that you love to read in October. Old or new, lets hear them. I’m always on the lookout for a scary book and I’d appreciate your input.
Cheers and have a safe, scary, and Happy Halloween!!!!!

I thought this might be worth a shot and I figured why not ---
If any of you have read Crowley's Window, The Dark Side of Heaven or Valley of the Scarecrow and have posted a review here on GoodReads but not on Amazon, would you mind taking a sec and copy/paste it over at Amazon for me?
I've recently re-released all my titles through EnemyOne so they don't have very many reviews since they're new editions.
Cheers!
