I Don’t Like Dystopian Novels
It took me forever to read The Hunger Games.
I checked it out from the library probably three or four times. I’d read the first page or two, get bored or distressed, and set it down. Little did I know I needed to make it to page ten to get hooked. lol
But The Hunger Games was an exception to my anti-dystopian policy. I think my aversion is because the end of the world is….depressing. Imagine that. And when you throw in things that cou...

Shades of Allegiance and Fast Reader
Shades of Allegiance is here! Finally!
It’s only been four years, two months, and twenty-two days since my last book, but let’s not dwell on that. Let’s celebrate the fact that Ash and Rip are back, and they are freaking awesome in this book. You should read.
One of you already has. Seriously! Either that, or you were sneaky, swiped to the end of the book and saw the little bonus there. If you weren’t sneaky, you read fast! The book wa...

A Deleted Scene and 11 Days to go
This was going to be the opening scene to Shades of Allegiance. I wrote it years ago, and it stayed in the book all the through beta readings and even went to my editor. I like the scene, but it didn’t set up the book quite right, and after some deep thoughts, I decided the book would be stronger without the Saricean invasion.
11 days to go!

Blueberry Muffins

Forgive me for a post that’s totally unrelated to writing.
My boys are in 4th grade. They’re allowed to bring a snack to school. A few years ago, I started making blueberry muffins to send with them. I figured making them myself was better than buying them, and probably better than something packaged like Goldfish (which is my backup when we’re out of muffins) or a granola bar of some sort.
This m...

Should I write more Science Fiction? Or get back to Urban Fantasy?

54 days until Shades of Allegiance!
I can’t wait for you guys to read this. I think it might be your favorite Shades book! I love so much about it. I’m still waiting on a few last comments from my editor, then it’s on to the copy editor, then proofreading, then I have to format and upload it, etc. But it’ll be here in January!
Now, I’m in this in between stage. I’m not quite sure what to work on w...

100 Days of Writing!

I’ve written for at least 30 minutes for 100 days in a row.
That’s a HUGE accomplishment for me! My brain is so easily distracted, and when Covid hit, all my extra brain cells were diving down every rabbit hole looking for updates and answers and research and what ifs. I didn’t write. And if I’m being honest, my writing before then was pretty dang sporadic.
Fast forward to May and Becca Syme’s 30 Day Writers Block Challenge. We authors sent an email for every 30 minutes we spent thinki...

2019 DNFs Part One
Yes, I realize we’re 5 months into 2020, but I’ve started reading again (yay!) and I realized there are a ton of books I’ve tried in the last year that I haven’t recorded or reviewed (I only review books I love). I’ve tried out so many authors, so many books that just weren’t for me, that I thought I’d do a brief run down of why they didn’t work (for me).
My descriptions are deliberately vague, but I think I get the point across and it’s enough to help me remember the books and why I didn’t l...

Quarantine Home School Day #2
In junior highsometime in the mid 90sthere was a flood. I have two vivid-for-me memories of this day (my visual memory usually sucks). The first is of my junior high principal. I was a good kid, so I never had anything to do with him. He was just there and someone Id only meet if I was in trouble. But on this day, I remember him being half-soaked and on the phone and taking care of business. I remember thinking, Wow. Hes in charge and doing a lot and coordinating so much. He went from...

Quarantine Homeschool Day #1

We survived!
And Im exhausted. Im not sure why. It wasnt a hard day; I just had to be on all day. I expect it to get harder and to meet more resistance from the kids. They pretty much did what I asked today, which I super appreciate.
I used this guide from the Khan Academy. It was super helpful just to have an idea of what we could do at certain times. I mostly stuck to it, but we added in watching an hour of Science Mom. Love her! I hadnt heard of her before today, but my Science kid...
